Supermarket worker offering her discount

Belledan1 · 11/03/2022 07:06

Went to major supermarket. Realised had left card at home. Luckily DH had cash. Tried to add up as went along as only a top up shop. Realised near the end of the shopping going through it would go over so we said can we not put something through. The cashier said I will put my discount card on if you want so can get it. I said don't worry but thanks. She was really young and a friendly girl and thought dont went to get her into trouble and did not need it financially anyway. Is this a new thing to help people out and I wonder how many people will take advantage that don't need it.

She shouldn't have offered that. She would certainly be getting a disciplinary about it if her employers knew.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/03/2022 07:12

She could be sacked. My grandson works pt in a supermarket and it is strictly against the rules to claim discount even for friends and wider family.

Thatsplentyjack · 11/03/2022 07:15

Can they even put their own discount card through on a till your logged into? I though they had to get a colleague to give them discount.

Soubriquet · 11/03/2022 07:17

She would have gotten into major trouble if found out.

When I worked at a supermarket, I and one other named person was allowed to use the card. That was it

Anyone else and we would have faced disciplinary action

Yes, they are for personal use, and there's really strict rules.

There's either a training issue or they don't care.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 11/03/2022 07:17

She wouldn't have been able to do it under her own log-in I don't think - when I worked for ASDA you had to go to a colleagues till to buy anything with staff discount.

And yes, if she got caught she'd lose her job.

This would also mean they had their purse/phone on them at the checkout which when DS worked in a supermarkets was a major no no. He had a staff card that had to be swiped and he could do it himself when doing his own shopping.
Belledan1 · 11/03/2022 07:19

That's what I thought. Hope I don't get blastered for this but I did think she perhaps had slight learning difficulties. Hope she doesn't do it regularly and get in to trouble.

Definitely not allowed. She shouldn't have her card with her while working, and she certainly shouldn't be offering a staff discount card to random customers. Either she needs more training, or she's already handed her notice in, or you misunderstood and it was some sort of customer discount or promotion that you needed a voucher for.

Belledan1 · 11/03/2022 07:21

She took a card out of her pocket to go and do it.

Surely it would show when they cashed up too.

She def said use my discount

Was it asda?

I think the staff have so much discretionary discounts they can apply there. A couple of years back I was admiring a wreath at the till near Xmas as the cashier put my shopping through and we were chatting, she said I can give you it for half price if you would like it? Made my day.

My mother in law however worked for Tesco until last year and in 30 years plus wouldn’t even put a loaf for us through with her shopping in case she got sacked. I really doubt anyone young or not would risk using their own personal discount.

Belledan1 · 11/03/2022 07:28

No not Asda. She did like have a heart badge on with her name on I think but my eyes bad so cldnt read it.

How incredibly kind of her. I hope you thanked her anyway.

They can't.

I worked at ASDA - discount was only 10% (unless on a rare double discount day) and only you or a family member you lived with could use the discount.

I had a card and my mum used it too, but as soon as I moved in with my partner she wasn't allowed it anymore. They were really strict on it and people got disciplined and lost their jobs if they were found to be doing anything dodgy.

I wondered if it was her last day or something and didn’t care!

It wouldn’t show when cashing up but would think that personnel systems could see if the card was being used more regularly than is normal.

Orchidsonthetable · 11/03/2022 07:40

This was very sweet of her but my friends daughter got fired for this, although it was a friend she gave her discount card to.

Belledan1 · 11/03/2022 07:44

Of course i thanked her.

I’m not suggesting she used her staff discount though - she seemed to have permission to give discount on an item? Maybe it was just a Xmas thing that year.

No - they don't have permission to do that. At least, they definitely didn't when I worked there.

I wonder if the item was going to be reduced anyway and she just did it early.

MrsMop1964 · 11/03/2022 08:10

In Tesco Express recently I picked up a jar of coffee which seemed to be discounted, but at the till I was told it was for clubcard holders only. I didn't have enough money so I asked her to put it back
Don't know if it was because I only had a tenner and looked like an old lady spending her last penny but the security card took pity and let the girl scan his clubcard keyfob for me. There are nice people, would be gutted to think he could get in trouble. (And I immediately signed up for a clubcard to use in future!)

girlmom21 · 11/03/2022 08:14

It was lovely of her to offer and I don't know why people are being so miserable about it.

Nobody is being miserable. The girl was in danger of losing her job, nobody would want this to happen.
RJnomore1 · 11/03/2022 08:19

Could have been that, it fair made my day anyway.
