Aside from family and people that open their homes, where are the refugees going to go?

Fully support Ukrainian refugees finally being allowed to come to the Uk.

Fascinated about people that will be opening their homes to them and wondering in reality how many people that will help.

So for all the others that choose to shelter here, where will they go?

Aren't those coming to UK mostly people with family here?

PhileasPhilby · 11/03/2022 07:06

Well there are still many Afghan refugees from last summer living in hotels so…

Ifailed · 11/03/2022 07:10

Chelsea's football ground, Stamford Bridge, has seating for 41,798 ?

Namechangeforthis88 · 11/03/2022 07:11

Don't know about the rest of the UK but parts of Scotland are de-populated. I think people are initially put up in hotels or other temporary accommodation until long term housing is arranged. There are teams in local and national government that are dealing with refugees on a regular basis.

DivorcedAndDelighted · 11/03/2022 07:13

The government has a contract with Mears for them to house asylum seekers currently. I expect they will be taking some of the new refugees. Mears rents properties including from private landlords. They pay below the market rate but the rent is guaranteed and they take care of most maintenance.

QforCucumber · 11/03/2022 07:13

The same places many others go? There are areas of our town centre housing Syrian families, their children are in school (sil works in one of said schools) there are still many empty houses too

savyusername · 11/03/2022 07:15

There is a housing shortage where we are so I guess that isn't representative of the entire UK. As someone else said there are still refugees being kept in hotels.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 11/03/2022 07:21

Private rentals, hotels, and hostels I suppose.

The housing crisis doesn't exist everywhere - lots of parts of the country have available housing, it's just most people don't want to uproot their lives and live in those places.

Lastqueenofscotland · 11/03/2022 07:37

Hotels and hostels. And yep to that Mears contract. Although I don’t think Mears put refugees in private homes I thought they just took over G4S facilities

PakkaMakka · 11/03/2022 08:11

As others have said, there isn't a shortage of homes across the UK. There is a shortage of reasonably priced homes in locations where people want to live. There are rules in place to ensure that the responsibility is borne across the country and not concentrated in one or two specific areas (though this does take time Kent obviously struggles with this, especially with the impact of UASC)

underneaththeash · 11/03/2022 08:13

Quite a lot of people in my area have a little annex over the garage. Hopefully people will offer those out as well (we plan to).

thereisonlyoneofme · 11/03/2022 10:16

You are right about Kent, there is a massive housing shortage here and lots of hotels have been taken over for asylum seekers,/channel crossers. Many Afghan refugees are still in hotels and I think one of the problems there is many have large families and its virtually impossible to find large enough properties to rent.
Ukrainian refugees will hopefully find room with families, but many relatives wont have room so rental properties will have to be found .
I think it was said a few weeks back that the Gov were spending 4 million a day on housing for people.

birdladyfromhomealone · 11/03/2022 10:39

We have a few rental properties and are currently considering opening up ours to UKRAINIAN families.
We need to sponsor them to come into the country if they don't have family here.

TheNeverEndingIllness · 11/03/2022 10:52

The universities local to me are offering up the empty halls of residence for single refugees - one uni has just recently stopped using one hall so there's 100 bedrooms there already.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/03/2022 10:54

Every refugee I’ve seen interviewed who is heading for the UK had relatives here. Presumably, lots will stay with family.

Mears did take over G4S contracts and they definitely rent private sector properties to house asylum seekers; I rent one to them!
FloraPostePosts · 11/03/2022 15:30

They still need visas to come here, and I understand that those are only offered to people with family already in the UK, so they have somewhere to stay.

The new sponsorship scheme will, from the little I heard, be about matching a person or family with a host family here, before they arrive, so there will not be numbers of people from Ukraine arriving here without accommodation. If some do, they will be housed in the same way as any other refugees or asylum seekers.

i just saw on a news report a 76 year old man wandering around, alone, confused

i hope someone helped him

Don't be ridiculous.
FelicityPike · 11/03/2022 15:57

Within a 7 mile radius of my house we have 5 empty hotels. They have numerous rooms obviously, but they all have big function rooms that could fit multiple camp beds.
Why we can’t do this sort of thing for our own homeless is a whole other question.

balalake · 11/03/2022 16:02

Chequers and Chevening could be used, perhaps only 100 families between them but a help.

Samcro · 11/03/2022 16:03

i saw a good idea on our local news last night. a closed care home. all the infrastructure is there and keeps people within a community.

WouldIwasShookspeared · 11/03/2022 16:05

Hostels, hotels, b&bs, heck, even caravan parks! Anywhere. What matters in the short term is we help these people. If we wait until we've built houses for them it'll be too late.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/03/2022 16:19

I thought that the rules were that Ukranians would only be granted asylum if they had family here already who would accommodate them (and presumably have the income to support them as well?).

I don't agree with this at all, but if that is the case, then there aren't going to be large numbers of families needing accommodation.

This. That's the entire point of having to be sponsored.
