My sister in law works in the wholesale industry and said that office products ( especially paper) is in short supply and that they are struggling to get any. She said that a lot of paper comes from Russia and prices have gone up by nearly half which of course is going to be passed onto the consumer.
With the used car thread, petrol, utilities where is it going to end? Even buying a pack of paper and a stapler is going to be extortionate.

Anti depressants, from the way all this is going.

stuntbubbles · 10/03/2022 08:04

Paper’s been a problem for a while – the publishing industry is struggling and editions of books are different thicknesses now because of the paper.

Probably everything will be impacted, what with one thing and another. From an environmental perspective, it’s probably a good thing that material goods and consumables are expensive and not throwaway – an end to Tiger and Primark and their ilk would be great. From an economic one, not so much.

I agree that medication will also go up in price no doubt , it'll have a knock on effect for everything.

Can we afford them? Hmm

I agree. Fro an environmental point of view this is good. We will all consume less hopefully!

Ukraine/Russia produce 80% of the Sunflower oil that is exported.

Yep, same here. You can't shut down the World for long periods (covid lockdowns across the World) and expect normality as soon as restrictions ease. Some supply chains are many months, if not years, so will take a long time to get back to normal. Add in a war involving an important trading nation and it's a double whammy. We're in for a couple of hard years and things won't ever go back to normal because we're also facing all the costs/disruption of changes being imposed to tackle climate change.

But a complete disaster from an economic/financial perspective.

Hollyhead · 10/03/2022 08:15

Everything, everything is going to be significantly more expensive.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/03/2022 08:18

Well if paper is going to be in short supply and more expensive, they could help us all by banning junk mail and unsolicited catalogues.

I despair at the amount of both I receive despite concerted efforts to stop it. I receive several catalogues a year from about half a dozen companies because I bought one jumper from them five years ago and yet they just won't stop.

Food is going to continue going up sadly. Ukraine is a major exporter of wheat.

Plus we get all our catfood from Zooplus and their prices have increased 10/20% recently.

Totally agree, with fuel rising, every product & service will get more expensive and the cost will be passed on to the consumer.
Kazzyhoward · 10/03/2022 08:27

Small animal bedding (carefresh) seems out of stock everywhere and prices on ebay are through the roof from people selling their leftovers! Same with tissues - starting to see silly prices on Amazon and ebay for a box of "man size"!

That seems to be another knock on effect of the shortage of wood, hence the shortage of paper/tissues, etc. Again, due to a very long supply chain, and of course, paper/tissues etc are a by-product of the wood industry rather than a core/main customer.

Kazzyhoward · 10/03/2022 08:29

Yep, the snowball effect as the cost of fuel (and often raw materials) pushes up prices at each point of the supply chain, so you end up with lots of price rises along the way due to the cost rises at each stage.

Let’s not forget blame this all on Russia/Ukraine conflict. This is a product of Covid lockdowns. I wonder if the lockdown enthusiasts would still support them knowing how useless they were as a measure and the enormous human misery that they continue to cause for decades.

countrygirl99 · 10/03/2022 08:33

There have been strikes at Finnish paper mills that have also affected supply

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 10/03/2022 08:35

DP works in procurement for a global manufacturer, some materials have increased in price by 900%.
Prices fluctuate hourly, daily.
In my business most materials have doubled in price, I'm just passing that cost on, I've increased my labor charge too.

CarbonelCat · 10/03/2022 08:36

The sunflower oil issues is going to hit a lot of products hard. It is an ingredient in many things, especially as when Palm Oil was avoided it was put in as an alternative.

Whilst I agree some of this is because of the lockdowns, what an absolutely ridiculous thing to say that they were useless? They undoubtedly saved many people dying from or being very sick with covid. I agree the lasting affects are dreadful in many ways but sometimes you are faced with situations with no 'good' answers

BarbaraofSeville · 10/03/2022 08:43

We grow a lot of oilseed rape, which is generally sold as 'vegetable oil' in the UK - all those yellow fields.

I wonder if we actually have enough for what we need as a nation? But then the price of that will probably increase because of the higher cost of fertiliser, diesel for farm machinery, and increased labour costs.

I think lots of things are interconnected and there's always a knock on effect. Things cost more so people demand higher wages. Higher wages mean that the cost of producing things increases.

Sirzy · 10/03/2022 08:46

The costs to the haulage industry are sky rocketing so that will soon knock on to everything which comes to its end point via the haulage industry at all - so pretty much everything!

IrishMumInLondon2020 · 10/03/2022 08:48

So depressing. Our rent is increasing by £200 per month from next month and energy bills up another £150. It’s a lot.

sst1234 · 10/03/2022 10:47

As Martin Lewis said on R4 this morning, it’s important that we don’t allow this narrative to take over that the conflict in Ukraine is responsible for this issues. This was coming anyway. And we all know why that was. Lockdowns and the disastrous Covid restrictions. It’s total rubbish that everyone has to put up with the consequences of supporting Ukraine. This is self inflicted and not buying Russian goods is just a red herring.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 10/03/2022 10:51

@Ifailed

We'll have to go back to Lard.
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/03/2022 10:57

As well as disruption from Russia invading Ukraine and any knock on from lockdowns, there's also the chip/semiconductor issue that's impacting electronics etc and then for good measure we have Brexit.
The cost of producing everything will go up as fuel prices increase, as will the costs of getting it to consumers. Shortages of raw ingredients or components will impact supply chains and if things go wrong they will be harder or slower to fix. And then it will be stuck on a lorry trying to clear customs.
I can't think of anything that's going to be unaffected.
