To think people should start to stockpile a bit of food?

Do you think everybody should be sticking up on long life foods now before the prices rocket. I am wondering if to get a few each bits to put away now might save me abit of money later.

What do you think is it worth it or not?

Go on to the Prepper topic where we have more sensible conversations about this.
The usual confusion with panic buying is cropping up here.

teenagetantrums · 09/03/2022 13:43

This makes me laugh. I don't think panic buying will start because of a thread on Mumsnet. Since Brexit we built up a large stock of store cupboard stuff. Was helpful when people were panicking in covid. And yes we are stocking up now on stuff that will go up. I realise we are lucky and can afford it. I'm not sure how us buying a few extra staples a week is going to change anything. Do what you need to do

Tigofigo · 09/03/2022 13:44

@amylou8

I keep a months worth of food, water, medicines, toiletries at any time. I've not panic bought it and rotate it for shelf life, nothing is wasted. I've also got wind up radio, camping stove, torches, again for a month. I don't consider myself a prepper at all, but if the shit hits the proverbial it will happen very quickly, they'll be mass panic, and having enough in the house for a few weeks is basic common sense to my mind.
How much space does it all take up?!

Surely a months worth of water for a family of 4 would be about 200L - and that's just for drinking, not even cooking or washing

Bollocks989 · 09/03/2022 13:45

Loo rolls too!

sst1234 · 09/03/2022 13:47

It’s this sort of idiocy, promoted by OP, that leads to shortages.

JaceLancs · 09/03/2022 13:50

No definitely not!
I’m a last minute impulse buyer and live for the yellow stickers

JaceLancs · 09/03/2022 13:51

In any case we eat very little processed tinned or packaged foods so wouldn’t help

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 13:53

@bedheadedzombie, it was bleach, pasta, flour, handwash and bog roll.

I keep the cupboards well stocked so didn't run out of anything in the first lockdown. I used up fresh foods and had to shop around to get more. The big supermarket near me had no eggs

I remember seeing some people with trolleys filled with bottled water

It would if there was little fresh available.

Grin

So in an emergency (which is what OP means) you’d rather starve than eat tinned ham or peaches?

This.
MintyFreshBreath · 09/03/2022 13:56

This is exactly what will drive up food prices.

tkwal · 09/03/2022 13:56

People who stockpile are the reason we end up with shortages, massive queues,. price rises and eventually rationing. If it comes to all out war we could be sitting in rubble, dying slowly of radiation poisoning but at least we would have teabags, evaporated milk and tomato soup .
Bon Appetite !

ikeepseeingit · 09/03/2022 13:58

I think do it if it makes you feel better OP. I don't think we all need to though.

I moved out of my parents' house a month into the first lockdown. It was an absolute nightmare for us. We had no ability to get any household goods. Nothing was cheap. No charity shops. Even scales were nowhere to be found so I bought some very crappy ones online for £20. They're now on sale for £5. No cleaning products anywhere. I think we managed to find loo roll which was a blessing lol. I also couldn't visit anyone at all after just moving out for the first time, so I was in total isolation in a new place for at least two months and couldn't buy a toaster/kettle/ microwave.

Anyway, my ramble is to say that I have bought extra flour because Ukraine has a lot of the world's wheat supply, and being without bread the first time around was stressful enough. Can't imagine how fucking awful it must be for them.

I don't think we're going to have food shortages. But I don't blame anyone for being stressed and feeling they need backups.

Clarabe1 · 09/03/2022 13:58

No I still have 75 bags of pasta to get through.. I jest of course. Food hoarding causes shortages. Seriously save your money but you don’t need to be buying essentials unless you buy uranium from Russia. That’s in short supply.

Suzi888 · 09/03/2022 13:59

@nearlyspringyay

Are you trying to induce panic buying?
^

Fear not, there will be plenty of vegan food to eat, seeings though everyone detests it so much 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Seriously what would you panic buy? Pasta? and why? because of prices or you fear something else?

Caspianberg · 09/03/2022 14:00

I think prepping to an extent makes sense. It can save you a fortune.

The estimated inflation this year is 8%, so anything you buy today will probably be cheaper than next year

I buy many things when on offer. Like someone above, basics, toiletries, cleaning, tins. Tin tomatoes 1/2 price, il buy a case worth. We get through them quickly, and why would I want to pay double?
Just bought x2 large 130 wash laundry powder as in great offer down to €12 each. That will last probably until next year. Usually €22-25 each. It’s not to do with brexit/ Ukraine/ covid, I have always done. I’m sure many do, that’s why buy 1 get 1 free is so popular.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 09/03/2022 14:01

After some of the batshit idiocy I read on MN yesterday I am thinking of panic buying tin foil before that all disappears from the shelves for us all to make hats from.

Meanwhile OP, do whatever you think suits your own personal circumstances and choices best. You don't need us to agree or disagree with you.

tkwal · 09/03/2022 14:03

Ummmm hate to bring this up but...as long as we can light a fire to boil water we can eat. If there's no power there's o point having a well stocked freezer. Even the good ones only keep food frozen for 18 hours

HomeHomeInTheRange · 09/03/2022 14:03

I am panic eating the contents of my freezer in case I can't afford the energy bill to run it.

I am 3 tubs of Ben and Jerry's in.

Is this good enough?

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 09/03/2022 14:04

It's not going to help in the long term though because when you restock the price will have gone up anyway.

We're generally fairly well stocked as I buy things when they are on offer/yellow stickered. I'm not the 100 bags of rice woman though!

Getting a better paid job or a second income stream would probably be a better bet.

Beautiful3 · 09/03/2022 14:05

No.

Moonface123 · 09/03/2022 14:05

No, l have never stock piled and not starting now, its totally unnecessary.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 09/03/2022 14:05

@PowerhouseOfTheCell

No, let’s not start this old shite again. There was an article not too long ago featuring a women who stockpiled just before lockdown 1, that admitted she’d never eat the 100 packets of rice she bought
I wonder if she'd donate it to her local foodbanks, temples or gurdwaras as part of their food distribution/cooking activities. It can't be straightforward to store.
