To ask why fruit is so tasteless?

Strawberries again with no taste. Huge and look so juicy but absolutely tasteless.

Anyone else finding this with fruit in general?

Well they are out of season and flown hundreds of miles Confused Eat seasonal, local food and it will be amazing- I'm not sure what you are expecting from strawberries in March?!

HotPenguin · 08/03/2022 20:59

Err strawberries aren't in season.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 08/03/2022 21:00

Not in season and forced to grow - they taste much better at the pick-your-own in summer

tealandteal · 08/03/2022 21:00

Well it’s not really strawberry season, they must have flown quite far?

MartinMartinMarti · 08/03/2022 21:00

Because it’s March. Try them again in strawberry season.

HotPenguin · 08/03/2022 21:00

Try rhubarb.

BeyondMyWits · 08/03/2022 21:00

If you are in the UK it is not strawberry season til June. Fruit in season is sweet and rich and tasty.

Hairbrush123 · 08/03/2022 21:00

Where do you buy your strawberries from? I usually buy mine from Waitrose (as well as raspberries and grapes) and they always taste sweet

BlackCoffeeInAPoolOfSunshine · 08/03/2022 21:02

Strawberries are out of season so have been picked half way across the world unripe and ripened in transit. Try local ones at the end of May.

There's not much in season yet apples, pears and oranges are your best bets.

Seasonal fruit grown outdoors and eaten soon after picking isn't tasteless. Soft fruit doesn't travel or store well but you can usually find good apples - they store well and have long harvest seasons across the varieties.

ShamalaHamala · 08/03/2022 21:02

Is this how bad nutritional education is in the UK now? Confused

Sainsburys

Massive things.

Not just them, find so much fruit tasteless

Is it because they get frozen in transport?

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/03/2022 21:05

If you're buying out of season soft fruits you need to buy at Waitrose or M&S. If possible sniff them, if they don't smell amazing they won't taste it either.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/03/2022 21:05

In my experience, bananas are good all year round. Not many other fruits are. Granny Smith's and some other types of apple are fairly reliable. Oranges are a lot better in the winter. Soft fruit best in season as everyone else has said.

bellac11 · 08/03/2022 21:06

Fruit should be at room temperature (preferably having been in the sun for a bit) and in season, then it has some flavour to it.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/03/2022 21:06

Out of season strawberries taste crap. One of the last great seasonal foods. They don't transport well.

XenoBitch · 08/03/2022 21:07

They are out of season. Any you buy now are from abroad and are crunchy and tasteless. The only berries that have flavour are the ones branded Driscolls (I get them in Lidl). Raspberries and blackberries are lovely, even if out of season here.

RetrainRetrain · 08/03/2022 21:07

This is about the worst time of year for fruit as the local apples are running out as there's nothing to replace them yet. Try rhubarb, as others have said.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/03/2022 21:08

Grow your own alpine strawberries. The bigger they get, the more diluted the taste. Alpines are tiny and delicious.

Scarby9 · 08/03/2022 21:10

I had some out of season raspberries this week (Waitrose). Some of the best raspberries I have ever tasted.
But, generally, out of season fruit does have less taste.

Is this easy ish to do?

All fruit need to be at room temp before you eat it, get it out of the fridge.

ButtockUp · 08/03/2022 21:13

Going against the grain here but for a few years now, I've felt that strawberries and cherries ( I live in Kent with an abundance of local producers flogging their 'garden of England' produce) are tasteless. It's been a while since I've eaten a decent Victoria plum either.

Peas in their pods aren't as nice as they used to be , the best come from Worcestershire.

I usually grow my own tomatoes, courgettes, peppers , beans and peas but , obviously they are seasonal.

Supermarket tomatoes are hideous with a very large , white central core and not enough flesh.
You really can't make a decent tomato sauce with English tomatoes any more.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/03/2022 21:14

Is this easy ish to do?

They are smallish plants so yes. I murder most things and can grow them.

I also bought one of those LED kitchen garden things. I'm going to try strawberries once my herbs are done.

Theunamedcat · 08/03/2022 21:15

Alpine strawberries are so easy even I can grow them

ThanksItHasPockets · 08/03/2022 21:18

It's partly because it's March but even in season strawberries can be disappointing. The favoured variety is Elsanta which prioritises colour, consistency and disease-resistance over flavour. Highly recommend growing them in hanging baskets.
