To feel uncomfortable in Harrod’s?

I went in with my mum and baby recently on a day trip to London. I obviously knew I wouldn’t get very far with my measly £200 spends but I thought I could at least get earrings or something for baby.

Goodness me, I was very quickly humbled. I immediately felt insecure. Staff buzzing around me constantly and when I said “Oh I’m just looking around” they stared me down and walked off.

I just felt very unwelcome and inadequate the whole time. We did have a meal in one of the restaurants which was nice but I couldn’t get away quick enough afterwards. It didn’t help that we ended up getting lost for half an hour trying to find the exit, and the area with the escalators etc made me claustrophobic.

I breathed a sigh of relief when we got out. Then I went and spent my money in the nearby Zara instead.

All my friends say they love snooping around Harrods but I hated it. Anybody else?

Round of applause OP £200 to spend on baby earrings in Harrods....

maddening · 08/03/2022 20:06

I never enjoyed shopping with a baby tbh, harrods or otherwise

maddening · 08/03/2022 20:07

Give over @RewildingAmbridge what an unnecessarily dickish post

Jackofallsorts · 08/03/2022 20:08

Harrods is a dump. And the food hall is shockingly poor.

Chocolattay · 08/03/2022 20:08

@RewildingAmbridge

This isn’t a stealth brag. It was from my measly £2400 savings account and this trip has been planned for a year. It was my spends for the whole day.

@RewildingAmbridge I took it to mean op was hoping to get earrings for herself or something else for baby.

Chocolattay · 08/03/2022 20:09

@NewbieDivergent correct

@RewildingAmbridge is that really necessary? Grow up.

I find Harrods overwhelming generally. I only like the food hall

Chocolattay · 08/03/2022 20:12

The half hour where me and my mum were lost was horrendous. I was so desperate to just see some sunlight Grin

Harrods is more of a tourist trap, no? I’ve been with £20 and managed to find something to buy…

PandoraP · 08/03/2022 20:13

Harrods is full of tourists and most of the people browsing cannot afford anything. I spend my money in the ice cream bar Smile

Glad you found stuff that you like in Zara, Op!

Chocolattay · 08/03/2022 20:15

Can’t be sure but the other people who were there when I went didn’t seem necessarily like your bogstandard tourist. Deffo a few socialise types in there

Harrods is for tourists, and full of overpriced tat. And as for the staff, they work in a shop so I wouldn’t worry too much about what they think, they aren’t any better or worse than you or anyone else.

Chocolattay · 08/03/2022 20:16

@RewildingAmbridge

If you’re accusing me of being a troll, I’m pretty sure if I wanted to troll I’d choose a more interesting subject than an anecdote of a time I went to Harrods and didn’t really like it ConfusedConfused

I love walking round Harrods but usually only buy stuff from the foodhall (could easily spend £200 in there)

rachelohrachel · 08/03/2022 20:17

I'd go to Liberty instead!

SantaHat · 08/03/2022 20:18

Do you still have to pay to use the toilets in Harrods?

bluepeacock · 08/03/2022 20:19

I love Harrods - especially the tacky replica Egyptian bits (wish I could've seen the statue of Diana with doves or whatever it was too before it was removed!)
We've have taken the dc's a couple of times and they loved it too - especially the food hall. Also managed to buy several things around the £50 mark both times we've been (a harrods teddy bear, Lego, art stuff, nice chocolates, macarons and teabags etc in the food hall).

The staff were lovely and friendly also - especially in the toy department.

@bluepeacock

I probably should have given it more chance as I didn’t really go near the toy area or the food hall (just a restaurant). I just wanted to get out ASAP. It overwhelmed me very quickly, it managed to be big and intimidating yet claustrophobic at the same time.

It would have been nice to get a little something though.
