To feel uncomfortable in Harrod’s?

I went in with my mum and baby recently on a day trip to London. I obviously knew I wouldn’t get very far with my measly £200 spends but I thought I could at least get earrings or something for baby.

Goodness me, I was very quickly humbled. I immediately felt insecure. Staff buzzing around me constantly and when I said “Oh I’m just looking around” they stared me down and walked off.

I just felt very unwelcome and inadequate the whole time. We did have a meal in one of the restaurants which was nice but I couldn’t get away quick enough afterwards. It didn’t help that we ended up getting lost for half an hour trying to find the exit, and the area with the escalators etc made me claustrophobic.

I breathed a sigh of relief when we got out. Then I went and spent my money in the nearby Zara instead.

All my friends say they love snooping around Harrods but I hated it. Anybody else?

@Sharnydubs

As a 'tourist ' in Fortnum's , I approached the cash desk apprehensively with my measly bag of sweets. The older male assistant was immaculately turned out , had a very posh, plummy accent and I was prepared to be treated with condescension. Couldn't have been more wrong, I was made to feel like his most valued customer ever ! Left the shop walking on air. What a gift to be able to make a customer feel like that over one tiny purchase - that is 'class ' !
Was he like Rowan Atkinson in Love Actually?!

😂

My ex spent an entire day in Harrods when he was visiting the UK - so yes, he was a tourist, but he loved it. I don't think it was his only visit either!

Last time I visited was as an overseas tourist 20 years ago. A hot day so I took a break with a cool drink and snack and used the receipt to-get a free visit to the rest room.
Purchased some cute Christmas decorations as gifts and amused myself marvelling at how stupid the rich must be to even consider buying a cardigan for a 3 month old for the best part of £100.
Visited the Diana shrine and thought how sad it was that anyone felt the need to erect such a tacky thing.
So all in all a fairly interesting experience that didn’t motivate me to rush back.
I felt some of the more uppity staff considered they were meant for better things but most were polite and inoffensive. I imagine the privileged and entitled customers treat the staff pretty badly!

I was there a couple of weeks ago. It was horrible tbh. The toy department hardly had any stock, the place looked derelict in parts. It just seemed like a store that had seen its best days and was just living off its reputation - it was tacky. Selfridges was much nicer.
Fortnum and Mason, was gorgeous

I think lots of these stores are like this.I remember some years ago going to Fortnum and Mason and it feeling unwelcoming .Most people are just in there for a carrier bag! Also read somewhere that the Russian Oligarchs wives are limited to a £300 spend nowadays! Libertys is a lovely store and feels welcoming . Regent Street is a nicer place I think

I felt like that in Selfridges in Leeds years ago, I'd taken my mum for a days shopping, we walked out & went to M &S & Next, I'd got enough money for a designed handbag but I came home & got one from John Lewis instead.

I was there last week just browsing and chatting with assistants and really enjoyed myself. I hadn't planned on spending any money there, and in the event ended up buying some fruit (and getting some free perfume samples).

I found all staff extremely nice and helpful, and were happy to talk to me about their counters even when I made it clear I wasn't buying.

This is a picture of a £500,000 diamond ring I tried on just for the photo (which I made very clear before trying it on).
