Surely they can’t expect us to pay 240 per month for power!

Just read Martin Lewis’s latest email and it’s predicting average bills of £2900 per year!! Surely the government will need to step in and subsidise this cost. Our current bill is about 100 per month, and this just seems untenable for the vast majority

The Tory's also won't remove the VAT off fuel bills. That would help a lot right now.

Moral of the story? Don't vote for a party that just cares about themselves. Roll on general election.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/03/2022 21:06

What a shit existence that'll be

Absolutely.

I’m a 70’s child too. I’d love to know how we might be better off. It was fucking grim. Loads of pensioners used to die of cold.

Wonder if the colder countries are expecting people to ‘adjust’ to it.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2022 21:06

Yet the government gave Ukraine £175 million this week... yet refuse to help people. What the actual fuck is that about

Ukraine gave up it's nuclear deterrents on the understanding they wouldn't be left to rot if the shit hit the fan.

Whydothat · 08/03/2022 21:07

I'm a lone parent, no CMS and working. My bill is going up to £250 a month from April.
I'll have to cut back a lot but if it carries on going up I don't know what I'll do. I have no idea how parent on benefits will afford this. Can they just cut you off if you have children?

Porcupineintherough · 08/03/2022 21:07

In colder countries they build their houses better, in the uk we just burn more fuel. And vote Conservative.

TacoCats · 08/03/2022 21:08

They aren't though. There is aid coming from loads of countries, there's weapons etc going there. Why the fuck did they give them a extra £175 million when there is literally BLOOD on Boris' hands because people are freezing to death in one of the richest countries in the world, it's going to be twice as bad next year.
JungleBungles · 08/03/2022 21:08

Had a lovely email from octopus - have worked out ours is going up to around £200/220 a month….

Fuck knows how we are going to be able to afford it…

I said to my husband earlier it’s going to be a choice soon between heating, eating and going to work all of which will be undoable shortly

I have never voted for those cunting Tory bastards and never will

Tilltheend99 · 08/03/2022 21:08

@tttigress

Erm, but if the government subsidies the people who pays? The tax payer. Who is the tax payer? The people!!
The tax payer/people have already payed in for many years so it is reasonable for the taxpayer/people to expect our country’s collective budget to go on subsidising energy and food if that is what we are most in need of (although gov would be better off privatising and getting some of those profits)
WouldIwasShookspeared · 08/03/2022 21:11

Mines going up to 300-400 pounds from 195, depending on usage. 195 was itself up from the 154 I was paying during my fixed rate.

To fix it now would be about 540 a month.

I wish I'd fixed it when they were offering 300.

TL:DR - We're fucked.

missmoon · 08/03/2022 21:11

They could tax energy company profits instead? Or wealth above a certain amount?
Kukdoos · 08/03/2022 21:12

Can't help but feel we are being forced in to meters (which are more expensive)

MurmuratingStarling · 08/03/2022 21:13

@BitterTits

Who can afford a fucking electric car in the first place?
Yep this... Let me just pull £30,000 out of my ar$e! Hmm I mean EVERYONE has got THAT just hanging around as pin money right?
HereComesSpringAgain · 08/03/2022 21:13

@LidlMiddleLover

yes i can!! as i said further down, the contracts end early summer!
so then we will re-think. 3 mobile contracts, sky tv with broadband...dont need it all

its a good thing really..

willithappen · 08/03/2022 21:14

We have downsized (in our rental) in order to save more money so we can eventually buy but it seems any savings we are making from downsizing in rental will now be chewed up by energy costs rising and general cost of living. No idea how we will ever be able to afford to buy.
I'm on maternity leave now and was working two jobs before that (one full time and one part time) as it is.
Then when it comes time to go back to work we will be no better off with me working due to childcare costs (which I assume will also rise in line with all these other rising costs)

So depressing

WouldIwasShookspeared · 08/03/2022 21:14

Or close the loopholes that allow big companies and the super rich to avoid paying their fair share.

But that'd affect them and their mates so they'd rather carry on squeezing pennies out of those least able to cope and least able to do anything about it.

Legalconundrums · 08/03/2022 21:15

@kukdoos that seems like the plan.... which can be turned on and off and controlled at will by the energy companies. Let's face it, we've been controlled pretty much for the past 2 years or more...

I'm with Octopus, they are actively recruiting right now planning for their huge growth.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 08/03/2022 21:15

Ours is fixed at £185 for gas and electric until October so I’m burying my head in the sand and will start worrying in September when we also have to remortgage as the 5 year fixed rate is up. Wish I could fix it right now!

MiniDaffodils · 08/03/2022 21:15

Rural households who depend on heating oil are going to be very badly hit.

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/03/2022 21:16

Unfortunately the collective money tree has just paid for a pandemic

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2022 21:16

On the upside Boris has a new energy strategy which he will reveal in the coming days. I'm sure we all feel better about that, right?

Kukdoos · 08/03/2022 21:17

Agree with you @Legalconundrums. I'm with octopus, I didn't know that

Pluvia · 08/03/2022 21:18

Much Monster:
Solar panels, that is what we should subsidise for homes that are well situated. They cost quite a lot, but they can make so many households almost independant of the grid.

This is nonsense. PV panels only produce electricity in daylight and even if you store what you generate in batteries it wouldn't be enough to heat and power a house — and certainly not in the winter, when light levels are lower and days are short. People who live off grid have to live very energy-efficient lifestyles. You can forget having Sky TV!

If all suitable roofs had PV it would help. What we need is a lot more onshore and offshore wind farms, tidal lagoons and so on.

one difference between then and now is homes are double glazed...that was a rarity in the 70's
cakeorwine · 08/03/2022 21:19

I wonder how much less gas would be used if we did 'Insulate Britain'?

Actually took steps to increase the amount of insulation in houses.
Replaced inefficient boilers
Helped with loft insulation, wall insulation
Helped reduce draughts

I know Priti Patel wants to jail people for years if they protest loudly about this - but insulating Britain could reduce the gas we use in our heating.

whenwillthemadnessend · 08/03/2022 21:19

We are about have a very hard few years. The war has made this 3 times as bad.

I predict back to the 70s with possible rations on power and possible even if this gets really tough rations on food. Spiralling inflation.

Stock up on blankets and cut down on your washing machine dishwashers and tumble dryers turn heating down a few degrees. Cut out unnecessary car journeys.

I for one would rather this to stop Putin than the alternative.
