Dodgy neighbour doesn’t care

While we're all complaining about fuel costs constantly rising, my neighbour blatantly takes a delivery of 5 drums of red diesel every couple of weeks and stands in full view of all the neighbours while he fills up his car, his wife's car and his sons car...all top of the range cars I may add...

Meanwhile, he's on benefits (although he delivers for local Chinese takeaway 6 nights a week and likes to tell anyone that will listen, how he earns at least £150 per night😡)

This has been going on for several years now...if I had the bottle I would phone and report him to the police.

He's also mentioned that he needs to decorate his house and get new furniture so he's going off on a lads holiday abroad for a few days and said he will damage a pipe in his loft before he goes so his house will be totally flooded by the time he gets home, as the house will be empty while he's away, and he will claim his house insurance to replace and reinstate everything, all for the cost of his £150 excess.

AIBU to be peed off at him?

Don't just complain, do something. You have several options other than the police.

FangsForTheMemory · 08/03/2022 17:17

If his insurers decide it's normal wear and tear, they won't pay up.

HereComesSpringAgain · 08/03/2022 17:19

wheres his wife whilst he's on a lads holiday?

she's going to be sat in a flooding house?

Xpologog · 08/03/2022 17:19

Next time he’s filling the cars call the police. For a start I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to store that much fuel at your house. Plus it’s red diesel, the police love that.
And a call to the benefits office re his job.

britneyisfree · 08/03/2022 17:20

How do you know so much detail?

Queeniepies · 08/03/2022 17:21

I'd report him to the various authorities but be prepared for them to do nothing; people like him always get away with doing as they please

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/03/2022 17:23

I'll just leave these here OP, if you're interested...

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/report-fraud-to-hmrc

www.abi.org.uk/products-and-issues/topics-and-issues/fraud/

(if you were to report to the insurance people before he does it, that would be pretty damning evidence, I'd think!)

RainingYetAgain · 08/03/2022 17:23

HMRC are quite interested in red diesel used illegally. I think they can seize the vehicles as well.
They might be interested in his work at the takeaway as well.
Google their hotline.

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/03/2022 17:23

You can report the use of red diesel in public roads easily, without needing any bottle at all: www.gov.uk/report-red-diesel-used-on-public-roads

The rest? I literally couldn’t even tell you our neighbours’ surnames - and we like them and socialise with them. How you know the ins and outs of the life of a neighbour you presumably go out of your way to avoid is anyones guess. I’d continue with the going out of your way to avoid him and then you won’t have to think about it.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 08/03/2022 17:23

He doesn't need to be seen filling up the diesel they will simply dip his tank so they could pull him over anywhere at any time it doesn't have to be at the house where you might feel 'identifiable' as the person who reported him

longwayoff · 08/03/2022 17:26

O the police simply LOVE a red diesel user. They get terribly upset.

SophB15 · 08/03/2022 17:26

@FangsForTheMemory

If his insurers decide it's normal wear and tear, they won't pay up.
They won’t pay to replace the damaged pipe, but they’ll cover all damages caused by the water under the accidental damage section of the policy if the neighbour has added that on.
TheHoptimist · 08/03/2022 17:27

You phone HMRC for red diesel.

You cant get rid of the trace from a car .

They regularly test around here.

incognitoforthisone · 08/03/2022 17:27

YANBU to be peed off but YABU not to have the bottle to do anything about it.

If he's taking delivery of red diesel from a reputable supplier and using it in vehicles for travel on public roads, that's illegal tax evasion.

If he's taking delivery of red diesel from someone who sells it cheap, then he's almost certainly receiving stolen goods.

The benefits thing I'd probably not get involved in, and there's nothing you could do about the insurance scam because he hasn't actually committed it yet. But the diesel thing's really dodgy and you should call the police.

Chloemol · 08/03/2022 17:28

Report to the police, the6 can catch them all out and about

Report him to the benefits office re his job, you can do it anonymously

peedoffnow · 08/03/2022 17:31

He knows every dodge, and only 5 years ago he got his kitchen and bathroom replaced following a small leak that he deliberately made worse so both rooms would get totally refurbished

She’s been rehoused as they’re splitting up and she will be moved out by then

Red diesel use should be reported here

www.gov.uk/report-red-diesel-used-on-public-roads

Benefit fraud here

www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud

Insurance fraud here

www.abi.org.uk/products-and-issues/topics-and-issues/fraud/

There is ALWAYS somewhere you can report dodgy dealings. Google is usually your best mate for such stuff.

peedoffnow · 08/03/2022 17:36

It’s crazy, because the neighbour opposite, 2 of her sons are policemen and they’ve actually parked at his gate to go to their mums while he’s been on his driveway filling up the cars but the neighbours sons have never done anything…also, he keeps the drums on his driveway in full view of anyone passing by, he’s so blasé…as for reporting him, I don’t think I could live with my conscience for reporting someone even tho I know he should be reported
OP posts:
peedoffnow · 08/03/2022 17:38

@britneyisfree

How do you know so much detail?
I know because he’s a wallymouth and loves to tell how much he’s saving on fuel etc and how his fuel payment for doing the deliveries is an added bonus because he doesn’t need to spend it on garage price diesel
OP posts:
TheSpottedZebra · 08/03/2022 17:39

So if you're not going to report him, let it go and stop worrying about it.

peedoffnow · 08/03/2022 17:40

@Queeniepies

I'd report him to the various authorities but be prepared for them to do nothing; people like him always get away with doing as they please
I honestly believe he would get away with it because he’s been doing it for so long and doesn’t hide the fact he’s doing it, and still he’s never been caught or reported
OP posts:
SpittinKitten · 08/03/2022 17:41

You could

  1. simmer with perpetual rage forevermore. 2)report him. 3)move to somewhere with neighbours you're far less invested in.

Thank you….also, I don’t know who his insurers are so wouldn’t be able to make them aware of his plans
