It's what this government thinks the people of the UK want. And in very many cases, they are probably right. This is what a lot of them voted for over and over again.

marqueses · 07/03/2022 19:37

According to the news I heard (radio not tv) they said that something like 11000 have been received and 5000 are being/have been processed. Or something like that.

Newjobformoremoney · 07/03/2022 19:39

I also heard that only 50 have been granted this morning on bbc.
Pretty shocking.
But as someone said earlier, that seems to be what the government thinks the country wants.

Now I can not stand the tories but is it not a case of these refugees claiming asylum in the first country they are getting to? It obviously won't be the UK! If I was running from war with a small child I wouldn't drag them across many countries before trying too settle. I do hope we don't refuse any requests made and help as many of these people as we can!

HRTQueen · 07/03/2022 19:43

I heard this last night then today a number of different figures (significantly higher)

It’s shameful

gogohm · 07/03/2022 19:44

I'm not fan of the government but they only opened the scheme on Friday. To have processed any by Monday is actually good. My friends claimed political asylum and it took many week just to get through the first stage.

TheOnlyMrsMac · 07/03/2022 19:52

YANBU. It is particularly shameful when you consider that around 1.7 million people have fled Ukraine. Poland has taken nearly a million of them. We had taken around 50 up until yesterday.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/03/2022 19:54

whereas Russian oligarchs that want to be in the house of lords, Johnson intervenes personally and overrides the concerns of the security services Hmm

is it not a case of these refugees claiming asylum in the first country they are getting to? Bit unfortunate for Poland - plus in the refugees' position, as welcome as Poland has been to 1m++ refugees and counting - it can't feel especially safe, sadly Poland is likely to be next.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 07/03/2022 19:54

I'd rather them take slightly longer and ensure we've properly considered and equipped for who we're taking in, than them end up in some glorified dosshouse hotel where they put the asylum seeker population. The people coming will need housing, financial benefits (at least for a while), nhs treatment and counselling, school places, preferably a ukrainian community nearby to help them integrate... its not a case of pick up and drop off in the middle of nowhere. The accommodation new asylum seekers are given is absolutely horrible in run down Britannia hotels with pest infestations:

Having said that, the government will probably take 6 months and still have them living in tents, they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery in peacetime!

ThinWomansBrain · 07/03/2022 19:55

couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery in peacetime they'd be pretty good at it in a covid lockdown though.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 07/03/2022 20:10

I suspect the majority of people from Ukraine seeking asylum will (hopefully) be here temporarily, keeping in mind they have left their menfolk behind. So, it will be women only, many with children in tow. If the children are young that will likely preclude the women being able to work, if they are settled somewhere there is work available. We have a housing crisis in this country, so I’m at a loss about what kind of housing can be found for large numbers, bearing in mind the absolutely dire conditions current refugees and asylum-seekers find themselves in

By that logic the UK will never need to take any refugees, will it?

And the invasion was going on well before then - so why did the government take so long to open any kind of scheme? They should have been on it from day one, like many countries in the EU have been.

So many apologists for this malevolent xenophobic behaviour from our government.

luxxlisbon · 07/03/2022 20:19

It’s just a classic pompous attitude that exists in this country, people thinking that if there is any relaxing of the requirements that then every single Ukrainian would come to the UK because of course they wouldn’t actually choose somewhere like Poland over the glorious UK 🙄

People will flee to neighbouring countries in higher numbers but we should take a larger number than we are currently doing so that 1. Ukrainian’s with links to the UK for example can choose to come here over other countries they have no ties to and 2. To distribute the numbers of displaced people more fairly throughout Europe.

Amnotamug · 07/03/2022 20:19

So because the uk is an island with France and Poland in between,we shouldn’t feel that the refugees are our responsibility….really!!

TBH had hoped the government had people working over the weekend doing the paperwork…no excuse IMHO but understand what you are saying.

It is a disgrace.

If Poland’s next, then we’re all toast anyway, aren’t we?

I understand the perspectives, but if they are in a safe country away from the war, how is it advantageous to the uk, to just forget security issues ect, and just unlock the gates so to speak ?

What about the humanity of making sure for the safety of the people that's already in x country's ? Then we need to make sure for anyone wanting to enter the uk, that they will be looked after rather than enter and disappear so to speak ?
ToiletGambles · 08/03/2022 08:49

I never, ever said we shouldn't feel they are our responsibility. My point was that we will probably get a smaller amount of applications than neighbouring countries as women

ToiletGambles · 08/03/2022 08:52

With small children may feel safer claiming asylum in the first safe country they get too rather than attempting a crossing to the UK. Again, I do not like the tories and it probably is a piss poor attempt at looking like we are helping but I don't think us and Poland are comparable. And, again, I do hope we help everyone we can.
