Disabled spaces are for those with Blue Badges..

It really annoys me when people park in a disabled space without displaying a Blue Badge! People either don’t care, or think that it is okay to park there, because they are only going to be a few minutes. Another thing is, that people also seem to think parking just in front of (or behind) the space, but overhanging it so it is impossible to actually get in the space is okay.

So today, when I went to the Pharmacy there was a car parked behind a tree, but overhanging the disabled space by well over a metre. There was absolutely nowhere else to park, within my walking distance. I did manage to squeeze in to the space, after a bit of manoeuvring, but it was a struggle and meant that I was quite close to the overhanging car.

While I was waiting in the queue to be served, a woman walked in and loudly said “someone in a grey car is blocking me in, I need them to move.” I turned and said “oh are you parked overhanging the disabled space?” She answered saying “I am parked in front of the disabled space.” I said that I was parked in the disabled space, but had struggled to get in because of how much the car parked in front was overhanging it. She then said that I would need to go and move it, to which I said she would have to wait until I got out. She got really stroppy saying she needed it moved straight away. I said no, she would have to wait until I had finished in the pharmacy. She then shouted that she had only parked there for a few minutes, while she went to the cafe and said “I am telling you to move, NOW, or I will phone the police.” I repeated that I was legally parked and if she had parked legally, there wouldn’t be a problem. I told her to go ahead and call the police and I would quite happily sit in my car until they came. She then said that she was going to get her car out and tough if she bashed mine while doing so. I replied, saying to go ahead, it would be her insurance who would be paying for any damage, not mine! By this time the person at the counter had went and got the Pharmacist, who came through and told her to leave, or he would be the one calling the police! She flounced out calling me a “fucking turd.”

I was actually shaking at all this, as I’m normally quite a quiet person. The Pharmacist told me to take a seat until he got my prescription and I felt okay. He actually said that this woman parks like this every day and hopefully she will have learned her lesson!

It was a good 10 minutes before I went out and got in my car. The woman was still sitting in her car, but opened her window and shouted “you had better watch yourself”! I got my phone and made a point of taking a photo of her number plate and how her car was parked, before getting in my car and manoeuvring out of the space, while she was giving me the bird! When I told my dd about this she said I should have just went and moved my car!

Before anyone says it, I admit I acted like this as I am completely fed up with not being able to park, because of the misuse of Disabled Parking! However, in my defence, I really struggle with my mobility and am uncomfortable standing. If I had went and moved my car, I would have had to walk a lot further, I would have lost my place in the queue and therefore would have had to stand again for longer as well, all to my discomfort!

polite term

girlmom21 · 07/03/2022 14:45

@TheOnlyMrsMac

OP Flowers

Who are these unreasonable --polite term- 4%? Show yourselves.

They'll be the idiots who think you can park in them when you've twisted your ankle or you're only popping in for a few things.
pantsandpringles · 07/03/2022 14:48

Well done OP. I'm a blue badge holder with a "hidden disability" (it's really not, just not in your face if you were to glance at me, unlike before when I had my wheelchair to get about)

I'm so glad you stood your ground. Please accept my sincerest thank you, from a fellow badge holder.

gogohm · 07/03/2022 14:53

It does depend, dsd has severe lds, severe epilepsy, autism, ataxia and more. Sometimes her mother or her carers don't return the badge to the place it's kept. We have to have space to open the door fully so she can get in - sometimes I have parked in a blue badge space without it but I've spoken to the car park attendant who has ok'd it.

DespairingHomeowner · 07/03/2022 14:53

@girlmom21

I'm so glad you were able to take a stand OP. The entitlement of people is infuriating.

For a lot of people with disabilities the walk to and from the pharmacy twice, for them to move for her benefit, would be too much.

^ this. Blocking in a disabled space is really low/selfish
youdoyoutoday · 07/03/2022 14:54

Well done you!! And I think your DD was wrong to say you should have moved!!

Sirzy · 07/03/2022 14:56

Good on you OP. Hopefully next time she will think before she parks

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/03/2022 14:57

Well done Flowers
I'm a newish BB holder and your mobility sounds similar to mine. Going back and forth to the car an extra time would be a big undertaking.

Snazzysausage · 07/03/2022 15:00

Well done, it must have been a horrible experience. It takes guts to stand up to an abusive bully like that.

LaChanticleer · 07/03/2022 15:04

So sorry some idiot put you through this. The pharmacist was sensible and kind - you have to hang onto the fact that most people are sensible and kind.

But some of them are utterly awful, and Im sorry you encountered a bigot today Flowers

SparrowLand · 07/03/2022 15:19

Good for you op!

I hate this. I struggle to park in the disabled parking at my local (huge) Tesco despite them having lots of disabled bays. They are usually filled by cars with no badge on display.

Also hate those people who see me, a seemingly able bodied person get out of the car and tell me to move it because it’s a disabled bay. Confused My badge is displayed but because I can walk people seem to think I shouldn’t park there.

NuclearBunker · 07/03/2022 15:23

I have BB in my car for my daughter. Obv only use when she's in the car, I'm able bodied. Someone was parked half in a blue badge bay a few months ago. I squeezed the car in, hoping they'd move by the time DD was finished in the dr. Nipped into the shop. Back to the car. Had a woman come actually running to me shouting "Oi, Oi, hang on there, you!" And then proceeded to berate me and call me "fucking disgusting" because she had seen me walking around the newsagent and knew 100% that I wasn't disabled, I was just some fucker who liked parking like a twat so she couldn't get out of her space safely, and she wanted to see whose ID was on the back of the card I was misusing. I couldn't get a word in edgeways! She was just shouting "Whose ID?? Whose ID??" She was clapping her hands in front of my face with every syllable! In the end I pointed to my husband coming out of the GP surgery with my daughter in her wheelchair- thank god they came out then! The woman actually laughed like we were both in on a joke together and said "Ah, here's me being all silly when you've got a disabled kid. I'll just shut up then! No harm done!" Then she got into her shittily parked car, did about a fifteen point turn to get out and actually gave me a big smile and cheery wave.

SemperIdem · 07/03/2022 15:30

Good for you standing your ground with that woman!

I utterly despise people who misuse BB spaces. Don’t care what the reason is, whether it’s they’re “just popping in” for something or they’re pregnant with sciatica, no badge, no parking there.

FloBot7 · 07/03/2022 15:35

Good for you. I don't have a disability but it annoys me how many people pull into the two disabled spaces at our local Tesco express because they'll "only be a few minutes". It's a Tesco Express, literally everyone who goes there will only be a few minutes Hmm

I don't think anyone who witnessed what happened will have thought you were in the wrong.

Arabellla · 07/03/2022 15:36

You did absolutely right. Don't listen to your dd.

Cantleave · 07/03/2022 15:40

I really feel for those who’ve got a hidden disability. People sometimes just see what they want to and if you can walk they think that you shouldn’t have a Blue Badge! I don’t think people realise that the criteria to get one is really quite strict and they aren’t handed out unless they really are needed!

People who have tantrums shouldn’t be allowed to drive op.

I hope she gets filmed next time she has a tizzy.

Onlyforcake · 07/03/2022 15:46

You absolutely did the right thing. She needs to be "inconvenienced" (obviously she brought it on herself) to realise she can't just take a legally required-to-be-there provided space nor prevent use of one.

What a dick move from her. I hope she gets a flat. I hope you're ok.

Hawkins001 · 07/03/2022 15:46

First I'm not perfect, but based on your perspectives op, you did the right thing, if the driver parked sensibly, then there would of been no delay.

burnthur5t · 07/03/2022 15:46

Sounds like you handled the situation very well. She'll be more careful with her parking next time

Leftbutcameback · 07/03/2022 15:58

That's horrible behaviour - glad the pharmacist supported you. Not sure who voted YABU Hmm

Leftbutcameback · 07/03/2022 16:00

Good point @wetlookknitwear (is that a Tom Daley tribute name?) - I don't want angry people like that behind the wheel

MsFogi · 07/03/2022 16:01

Good for you OP!

Yes @FloBot7 that’s the usual thing they say, I was only stopping for a few minutes! But, those few minutes, mean that those who need the spaces can’t get them.

I went to a Home Bargains, where someone was waiting for one of the cars in the disabled parking to move, so I had to park further away. I saw the driver get out of the car, and realised it was a friend of my son, who was in his twenties. I’m pretty certain he didn’t have a physical disability, and thought it was unlikely he had a hidden disability. One thing he definitely didn’t have, was a Blue Badge on show! I spoke to him in the shop about where he had parked and he just grinned and said oops, you’ve caught me out, but I’m only going to be 5 minutes!
