Saxenda weight loss

Smoothsoul · 07/03/2022 12:20

I’ve just been approved for saxenda. I’ve gone private as I’m in Scotland and not in nhs here.
I am 13st 3 and want to get to 11 stone.
My problem is I eat when I’m not even hungry due to emotional eating (my ex Dv and intend to go sit alone and eat chocolate if I get stressed about something) Will saxenda help with these mad chocolate cravings.
Im so miserable and hate myself just now.

how did you get approved? GP?

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 07/03/2022 12:28

I buy from “simple online pharmacy” who are based in Glasgow.

Yes, it will kill - or at least dull those cravings. I didn’t take my dose yesterday because still feeling rough post-covid. Just been out and bought posh chocolate. First two squares were delicious, second two - too much and too sweet. The rest has been put away.

HereComesSpringAgain · 07/03/2022 12:32

should i look into saxenda? been considering something along these lines to help me shift my mindset a bit

got a few stone to shift but once i get going i'm pretty good

HereComesTheSum · 07/03/2022 12:38

Had a look on their website but this on the front page of their own website put me off! Confused

"Serious side effects may happen in people who take Saxenda®, including:

Possible thyroid tumors, including cancer. Tell your health care professional if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. These may be symptoms of thyroid cancer. In studies with rats and mice, Saxenda® and medicines that work like Saxenda® caused thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer."

DaffodilDandilion · 07/03/2022 12:38

Yeah I was terrified by the thyroid cancer warning…

Smoothsoul · 07/03/2022 12:41

I did see that @HereComesTheSum but I’ve got high blood pressure & high cholesterol so I’ve a high chance of developing illness if I don’t take the chance. I only want to use it to shit two stone so I’m hoping no more than 6 months.

@HereComesSpringAgain
Asda online pharmacy. I applied last night at 10.30 and it was approved and dispatched my 10am this morning. I was quick to respond to their messages. One asking for ID and another of a full body photo (with or without face) and another of the scales display as I stood on them.

Smoothsoul · 07/03/2022 12:45

Omg my typo Hmm I obviously meant SHIFT but I’m not bothered however it leaves my body.

Hi I've just started Saxenda definitely taken away cravings I just don't feel hungry or even interested in food and I'm an emotional/ boredom eater it's been amazing just getting on with it without thinking about food constantly. Had my second weigh in this morning -5lb lost 12lb in total. I'd say you would lose that two stone pretty quickly and it's worth giving it a go x

User0610134049 · 07/03/2022 12:46

It’s worth a shot, seems to work for many people although I was concerned that not much info about what happens afterwards and how to maintain.

I’m glad I tried it but sadly for me after an initial loss the first week it didn’t work really. It made me feel slightly nauseous but the kind of nauseous that made me want to eat 😆

I also am very good at eating when not hungry, which is how I got overweight in the first place; so I still overate on it.
And the side effects like smelly gassy burps and heartburn were really unpleasant.

HereComesSpringAgain · 07/03/2022 12:48

how much was it through Asda op?

Labyrinthian · 07/03/2022 12:48

Are you leptin resistant with BMI over 35 and were you prescribed by a GP or Consultant? Seems quite a few people lately inspired by tiktok videos buying saxenda without understanding how it works and the online pharmacies are approving it without people being seen by their GPs. For some people they may get adverse reactions that mean they are less hungry/ might not have cravings which is usually temporary but that is a side effect and not what the hormone you are injecting does. Depending on the dosing you follow (for example my consultant increases my does only every few weeks) you may have no side effects. If you don't get side effects of appetite suppression and you are not leptin resistent it may not work for you, and it's a very expensive drug to pay for. If you haven't already talk to your GP about taking it if you approved online (no offense intended btw you may well have gone through your GP but there are loads of posts in various forums ATM from people who assume this is a miracle weightless drug and spend a fortune to be dissapointed - or lose weight too quickly and get gallstones)

Smoothsoul · 07/03/2022 12:49

@Youronlylimitisyourmind really? I’ve just had a snickers because I’m in a stressful call on hold to child maintenance. It’s like a habit when I get stressed I’d love it if if I could stop. 😢

Where did the snickers come from? Just don't buy all the crap so it's not accessible to boredom eat. I used to go to work with no money everyday so I physically couldn't buy crap. It works for me.

Youronlylimitisyourmind · 07/03/2022 12:56

@Smoothsoul I'm fat depressed and my weight affects everything in my life for the first time in 5 years I actually feel like I will succeed at losing the weight and it's not been hard at all I'm actually struggling now to get calories in because I'm not interested in food/ snacking I can't recommend it enough yes it's expensive yes you can have side effects (I only had a few headaches in the first week) but if it gets this weight off and enables me to think of other things than my weight and all the things my weight stops me doing then it's 100% worth it. Good luck! Here's to a happier healthier you xx

GarlandsinGreece · 07/03/2022 13:00

Google gymnema and chromium. Both are supplements that are very effective at killing cravings for sweet foods. Gymnema, if taken before something like chocolate, will make it taste a bit strange. I’m not overweight, but I have been in and out of the prediabetic zone since having my second child, and these supplements have been lifesavers at reducing my A1C.

BlibBlabBlob · 07/03/2022 13:00

@Smoothsoul if you're eating when not even hungry, for emotional reasons or out of habit, will an appetite suppressant actually help? It seems like a big risk to be taking if the problem isn't that your insulin/leptin etc isn't massively out of whack and causing unbearable hunger pains.

Have you tried anything else? Intermittent fasting might be worth looking into (Gin Stephens has written some good books on this). Don't recommend calorie counting, that's a hiding to nothing.

I'm an emotional eater too; intermittent fasting with a timer app on my phone keeps me more honest. Also have to be really strict about what's available in the house. I usually have snacks and often make the wrong choice as a result. If I'm really serious about losing weight I have to not have them in the house at all. Haven't yet found myself inexplicably drawn to a banana or pile of lettuce, but the chocolate bars and crisps call out to be eaten if I've got them right there.

Totally up to you of course but personally I would be trying non-pharmaceutical things before starting Saxenda. And apologies if this is your last resort and you've already tried everything else - in which case, I wish you the very best of luck.

BobMortimersPetOwl · 07/03/2022 13:11

Of course it won't work. You'll probably lose a small chunk of weight if you feel the appetite suppressant side effect of it, but once you stop taking it (and you will, you can't use it long term) you'll put it back on because you haven't resolved your actual issue so you'll still emotionally eat.

I'd be wary of using anything which isn't approved by NHS without it being medically advised too, because you won't be monitored for adverse side effects, which can be pretty severe from this.

I struggle with weight I looked into Saxenda and while I am not a risk adverse or highly fussy person..
This was a hard no from me.

You would literally have to rather die than be fat to take this.

VapeVamp12 · 07/03/2022 15:40

I asked my GP friend about Saxenda. I was thinking of taking it but was worried about the nausea side effects I'd read about - I'm awful when I feel sick.

He said thats one of the main ways it works. You'll feel too sick to eat and therefore lose weight.

drawingpad · 07/03/2022 15:45

I'm really surprised at someone who is 13 stone getting this, I genuinely thought it was for really obese people like myself. That said I also looked into it and concluded anything that suppressed my appetite would be wasted as I would eat anyway.

I don't eat because I have a big appetite I eat because I have a disorder and cannot stop. I will eat when I'm not hungry, I will continue to eat when I am full and I will eat when I'm unwell.

noctu · 07/03/2022 15:56

It's worth a go. FWIW I started Saxenda, I had a great loss the first week, but the side effects were horrendous - so much so that I had to discontinue it. Nausea and extreme fatigue/feeling spaced out, plus all the acidy burping. After a few weeks the side effects increased to the point where I couldn't do anything but lie in bed feeling sick as a dog (luckily I was WFH and could get away with it), after a few days of that I just stopped taking it.

I know some people don't have those symptoms though and have good results with it.

Schoolsearch2015 · 15/04/2022 08:49

Just wondering what brands you take and how much please?

ashitghost · 24/04/2022 13:35

I’ve been taking this for three weeks and I’m cautiously optimistic even not up to the maximum dose yet.

I’ve tried everything. Every diet, gastric balloon. I wanted a gastric bypass but I can’t have general anaesthesia due a complex allergy. £6k down the drain for two four month balloons.

This has stopped my constant fixation on food. I’m not doing any calorie counting, I’m not cutting out any food and I’m not weighing myself. I’m eating vastly less food than I was before taking it. I’ve had no side effects whatsoever.

My clothes are looser and I can tell the weight is coming off. I’m only going to weigh myself every six weeks. I’m not exercising either; I’m unable to exercise because I have disabilities from cancer treatment three years ago.

Badlifeday · 24/04/2022 13:42

Asda seem very thorough, I've bought it from several online (U.K.) pharmacies and only ever had a form to complete.
With reference to the risks, I think it is viewed as worth it for people who are concerned that their obesity is having very negative effects on their health, which of course it will do. The OP seems quite light to need it, though of course I don't know her BMI.
It doesn't just work as an appetite suppressant by the way.
