Posting for traffic. I need a new mattress as my current one is causing me shoulder pain and back pain. I'm a side sleeper. I don't want to have to replace in 2/3 years but also can't afford a super pricey one.
Any recommendations?

I recently bought a new bed. I didn't do any research beforehand as I just thought I'd try out some beds and pick the most comfy one.

Big mistake! The mattress I chose is a Sealy one, extremely comfortable. I no longer wake up with pain in my hips. I do however wake up in a puddle of sweat. Apparently memory foam mattresses are not breathable so they reflect your body heat back at you.

Just something to consider OP.

Thank you my current one is a memory foam (a much cheaper one if that makes a difference) and I sweat a lot even during the winter.

IKEA Hyllestad, in the medium firm. I sleep well every night. £260.

lookingforjobinspiration · 07/03/2022 12:41

Don't underestimate the power of a great mattress topper! I got a new memory foam mattress and hated it, it massively exacerbated my back and shoulder problems, then bought a £40 topper from John Lewis and it's like a different bed. Back and shoulder problems almost gone, and I sleep so much better!

HereComesTheSum · 07/03/2022 12:43

How odd. I was about to start a thread about mattresses for my daughter, she's 4 but I think I'll still get some good tips from this thread!

HidingFromDD · 07/03/2022 12:55

Hate memory foam, always too hot. Recently got a relyon (I think). Not cheap (600ish). Was v comfy in the shop, but I found it a little too hard when I first used it. Added a cheap topper and it’s wonderful now. Really does reduce back pain

I considered a topper just to save me some money at least for now as I don't want to have to replace in a few years. My current one is only 2yrs old I'll have a look at a topper

We got a mega expensive Dreams mattress from a local shop for a quarter of the price. The sort of local place that looks like it sells second hand pine and dusty mdf but Is actually full of seconds from posh shops at a fraction of the price. Our mattress should have been £2k and we got it for £400 because it was ‘marked in transit’. I can’t find any marks on it all and it like sleeping in heaven.

Definitely worth looking around to see if there is any such place near you, or if you are in the north east I can let you know where I got mine Smile

Unfortunately I'm in London 😅 I might take a trip to store to try a few out and see what's best.

I have an Otty hybrid and it's incredible. We paid in instalments.
If you get memory foam make sure it also has pocket springs (the more springs the better) so the hybrid ones are best.
If you have a spring only Mattres you'd probably get away with a memory foam topper.

Soozikinzii · 07/03/2022 13:11

Ours is a firm hypnos mattress as recommended by my husband's physio. He hasn't had back trouble since . We got it at a reasonable price from mynextmattress online .it was around £400 can't remember exact cost . I think we paid in 4 installments. But well worth it!

Bought a new mattress last August and I'm as happy with it now as I was when I first slept on it. Amazingly comfy and supportive, no matter which way I'm sleeping [I have back issues and am a combo sleeper; Mostly on my side, in 'coma position', or occasionally my back].

Recommending because I love it, and because it was a pretty good deal imo.

Brand: Zinus
[I'm in Aus but it's an international brand, also available in USA, UK, Europe, Asia]

Mattress: Zinus Pocket Spring Euro Top Memory Foam

Description: It' a hybrid- iCoil innerspring with memory foam, plus inbuilt 'pillow'-type topper [Euro Top] appro 8cm. Total depth of mattress &topper is about 35cm.

Price: About AU$380/GBP£210 - Ordered through eBay and scored an 22% eBay Plus discount plus free delivery.
(It's a 'mattress in a box'; rolled up and vacuum-sealed, and was delivered to my doorstep 3days after ordering.)

*The only downside for me is that it's bloody heavy, so I have a difficult time lifting to tuck sheets when making the bed.

DelilahBucket · 07/03/2022 13:29

Just bought our second Hallestad from IKEA. Our first is eight years old and just starting to sag, we've been very pleased with it.

Arsewangry · 07/03/2022 13:46

We have a simba mattress with a down topper and it is 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 07/03/2022 16:59

I've recently bought a Mammoth Hybrid. (From Argos).

I'm also a side sleeper who used to wake up with hip pain and I overheat terribly on memory foam but this hybrid seems just right,
so certainly investigate the many hybrids around.

Argos have a 100 night exchange policy, in case it's not for you.

FayCarew · 07/03/2022 17:10

I have an ikea morgedal memory foam one and a cotton mattress topper on it. Not sweaty. The mattress isn't firm enough for me but is ok.

OohRahhMaki · 07/03/2022 17:15

First had a Hallestad from IKEA. Alright and good for the money but needed a thick mattress topper. They also only do up to a King.

When we got our new bed we couldn't go anywhere to try a mattress so we ended up getting the Emma Premium, as you could keep it for 200 days and return it if not comfortable.

Just checked and they have a sale at the moment with 50% off - so it's £375:

Garysmum · 07/03/2022 17:16

Some medical friends of mine spent 10k on a mattress. I wish I was lying, I still can't get my head around it.
Many years ago I worked with a mattress manufacturer and their advice was to try every mattress in the range, when you get to the point you can't tell the difference, then no point spending the extra. Some years ago I tried this theory = £1500 mattress.
My current model (possibly a mistake upon separation to leave said mattress behind) is a £400 double from JL. with an expensive topper. I really think I could do better but for just me it's ok.

OohRahhMaki · 07/03/2022 17:17

Sorry, posted too soon... I find the Emma premium mattress really comfortable and well worth the money.
When it's on sale it's only £100 more than the Ikea one, but it is worlds apart in terms of comfort!

contactornotthatisthequestion · 07/03/2022 17:17

i have back and shoulder issues too, also mostly side sleeper.
i swapped from a memory foam to sealy posturepedic ortho from argos, starts at 285 for double, ive put a padded topper on it, not a mf one just those like tgick quilts as was just a touch too hard but yet firm enough and its fab now.
plus i dont wake up with half of me sweaty when ive laid on the mattress and the other half cold as ive kicked off the quilt due to said sweatiness!!

The IKEA horvag is excellent. Really comfortable and good value.

I did this too. I got a £2k Sealy mattress for £475. Mine had the slightest scuff on the corner that just brushed out. It was advertised on Facebook and was in a warehouse local to me. (I'm north west)

Ours is an IKEA Sultan. We have had it for 9 years and it is as firm as the day we bought it, with hardly any indentation, even on rugby-playing DH’s side. We like a very firm mattress, though - not sure if it’s to everyone’s taste.

Cuddlemuffin · 07/03/2022 18:23

I've had a tempur mattress and a Simba mattress and they both sagged over time and were too hot. We recently bought a mattress from IKEA and it's so firm. I love it, the best thing I've ever purchased for my back. Go and try then in store. Cheapest but absolutely the most comfortable mattress I've ever owned x
