JD Wetherspoons

Mmmm interesting news about this well known 'family friendly' pub chain. They have in place a policy which limits parents to 2 drinks only - alchohlic & non alcholic - to prevent them from staying too long in their establishments with their children. One customer queried this when he was told about it and was told that the adults could stay in the pub that he child would have to leave, unsuprisingly he chose to leave and go elsewhere and was told yes this is true and that the JD Wetherspoons would back any of their staff/managers who enforced this policy. I used to take my family to a local wetherspoons as I enjoyed the fact that they are quiet and peaceful places. But from now on I will not be going anywhere near any wetherspoons - with or without my 2 sons and I intend to let everyone I know who has children that they shouldn't go into wetherspoons. Just another wonderful example of family unfriendly UK at it's best!

Sheik, i used to go to the snooker club every weekend when i was 17. Do you mean the one in town or terry's? I used to go the one in town and there was always a fight. It always was over a drink or a slapper.
I like salisbury Cod, I've been there shopping but never on a night out.
I think Bristol is probably the roughest place ive ever been out. I lived there for a while and that was quite eye opening.
Have yuo ever been to the tavern in melksham?

lazarou · 09/01/2008 18:12

oh, I love knees, you can buy just about anything there. I always get my kitchen stuff from there.

SheikYerbouti · 09/01/2008 18:13

never been drinking in Melksham. I did a gig there once, and It was so trayumatic I have never been back

We did get invited a a b day party there in Dec (was it Paeery's bar, something like that) but thankfully I was going to the MN meet in London that night

Yes, snooker club in town. Dreadful place. I used to go there with DP and his mate Crog.

Horrendous.

Perry's bar

I need to learn to type

SheikYerbouti · 09/01/2008 18:15

Anyway, all of these places could be worse, they could be Swindon

MsHighwater · 09/01/2008 21:41

As far as I'm concerned, it's no-one's fecking business how many drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) I, or the other adults with me have, when out with my dd. It might be of wider interest how well I care for my dd but I don't think Wetherspoons are especially well-qualified to judge that.

The very idea that some people think this is a good idea OR that Wetherspoons is doing it to promote child welfare is utter bollocks. All the rubbish parents mentioned in various posts will NOT be transformed overnight into models of impeccable parenthood by this so it won't make any difference to their poor kids.

I think pubs and other licenced venues SHOULD be places for children far more than they are. I'm quite happy for there to be some pubs that are more geared to adult drinkers and less suited to children but Wetherspoons is trying to have it both ways and I don't think they should succeed.

lazarou · 09/01/2008 21:49

I'm with you on that one sheik, Swindon is a proper shitehole.
Cod, not sure about where the assault could have been but there was a bad one outside the snooker club and the guy ended up in a coma. I think he is in the bath mineral hospital now, although he may be out now. It was a while ago.
Trowbridge is pretty horrendous for people getting assaulted. Is oscars still open on the longleat estate? That was a proper rough club.

SheikYerbouti · 10/01/2008 07:36

Ohj God, Oscars. I remeber going there in my first year of university. Rough ain;t the word

And Reflections in Wesbury (I think it's Club Ice now) Thery run coaches to there from Bath every weekend. I went there once as well, and itwas full of pissed up squaddies. I got chatted up by a bloke called "Daz" who had the look of a deep pan Hawaiian. I know how to pick em, me. One of them menevres of my department, who is 19, still goes there on a regular basis.

SheikYerbouti · 10/01/2008 07:37

The members of my dept, obv

Ubergeekian · 10/01/2008 07:58

I think it's a reasonable policy. Parents shouldn't be hanging round pubs for ages with children, and it'll be much easier for the staff to have a clear and uniform policy than to be expected to make decisions in individual cases.

Twinkie1 · 10/01/2008 07:58

Excellent policy - In my view what are people doing taking their kids to big pubs like weatherspoons where they get exposed to young idiots getting drunk.

Have been in 2 - one in the city and one in Colcester with DH and I won't be repeating the experience.

kittylouise · 10/01/2008 09:44

Talking of west country rough-arse places, Swindon and Trowbridge CAN'T be as bad as Gloucester, the worst night out I have ever had. Seriously bad.

lazarou · 10/01/2008 11:06

Oscars is the worst for squaddies, but they all go club ice as well. It's because the army barracks are in warminster, now there's another rough town.
Oh just remembered before we live in trow, we lived in the center of frome. The fights outside the wheatsheaf at the weekend were huge. The police once turned up to a proper massive fight and me and dh (well, we weren't married then and didnt have children) were watching from our window and the police started spraying pepper spray. It must have been quite a lot of pepper spray because our eyes started watering, so we had to shut the window. Crazy nights.

SheikYerbouti · 10/01/2008 13:35

I used to teach in Frome, like Bath, there is a big divid there isn;t there between rough as a badger's arse and v v posh (Posh usually from outside, Buckland Dinham/Mells IME)

Went to a hen night in Frome when I was pg with DS2. Thankfully, I was driving so I was able to beat a hasty retreat before it got messy

The West Country is great sin;t it? Even a seemingly posh town like Bath is rough as arseholes at night, (Lamb and Lion in Lwr Borough Walls is the den of iniquity in Bath. Underage Vicky Pollards aplenty. The Rat and Parrot is also bad)

lazarou · 10/01/2008 14:06

The saracens head was always a bit rough. I like sitting outside the pig and fiddle in the summer. Acutally, I used to like doing that before I had children. Now I walk past feeling a bit envious of all the 'yoof' frittering their student loans away on drink.

kittylouise · 10/01/2008 14:09

Good old Westcountry!

Even Cheltenham, seemingly genteel and smart, turns into complete carngae after dark, shrieking packs of people and fights all over. Same as Taunton and Exeter. Abd Plymouth is a bloody no go area, imo, like Gloucester. Once experience, never repeated!

Gingerbear · 10/01/2008 14:16

Our local Wetherspoons is full of winos and alkies propping up the bar all day long. So I wouldn't set foot in one with the kids in tow to be honest.
I have been known to drag them along to other pubs though.
What ever happened to the days when you could leave them in the Beer Garden with a bag of crisps and a lemonade? (Oh, yes, Beer Gardens now full of smokers)

lazarou · 10/01/2008 14:21

The Barge at seend is a really nice pub. You can have a drink outside and watch the boats, lovely. Foods good too.

Gingerbear · 10/01/2008 14:22

Wetherspoons - a bit like 'The Jockey' pub in Shameless, only with stickier carpets.

SheikYerbouti · 10/01/2008 14:40

Oh yes, Barge at Seend is lovely. Have been there to eat a few times.

Sarrioes is roufgh, I went there a couple of weeks agio. I felt old
