Just that really. My eldest son has some sensory issues with textures, and I can really relate to his frustrations. He's overcome ALOT but easily gets frustrated with his socks, shoes and underwear. Anything that's tight. Getting dressed is not fun!

I've never really thought about it before but I have a few sensory issues myself. For example...

  • Wearing a polo neck, even through i wear them all the time if it touches my neck in the wrong place it will make me feel unwell!
  • socks, if they're too short and baggy it will literally spoil my day because it makes my whole body feel so uncomfortable
  • bedding that is baggy... so irritating. Can't get over it
  • panty liner... I absolutely hate them. I had to wear one the other day and in my head it just made my underwear and jeans too tight. I was on edge until I could remove it.

That's it really. I even feel on edge typing them up!
I've never really thought of these things as sensory issues before just things that made me feel so irritated and I never knew why but realising it actually feels good!

The sound of people eating and gulping drinks , I totally cannot deal.

lulabelled · 06/03/2022 02:13

I have quite a few sensory issues but would otherwise describe myself as neurotypical. I absolutely hate the sound of people eating/slurping. To the point it makes me feel sick. I hate the sound of tissues or packets rustling. I can't stand the feel of newspapers, paper or wooden items- especially if I have wet hands. I can't tolerate the sound of constant tapping or similar noises. It literally feels like a drill into my brain Blush

Often I have to just tolerate it, but it makes me feel anxious and horrible.

bellac11 · 06/03/2022 02:14

Dont get me started. I have tested out ASD screeners and score very low (I get them from work) so I know Im not high on the spectrum but my god am I fussy when it comes to things like this

Noise, bright lights, particular pronounciations from people who say their 's' in a certain way or if I can hear peoples mouths moving on the radio (there was a doctor who used to be on Jeremy Vines show whose mouth did this, nearly crashed the car a few times).

I also HATE duvet covers that end up with empty bits and the duvet slips down inside it.

Also people with quite gravelly or mucasy (thats not a word) throat voices, like the man that used to do the Mr Kipling voice over, awful, almost a bit gargly.

Urgh, just thinking about this, I bought a slice of cake recenty which came with one of those awful wooden forks.

Also cardboard straws (retching at the thought right now)

Also the sound of knitting, it makes me scared, feels manic.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/03/2022 02:18

Wet wool/ knitted material - My son has this thing at the moment with putting his gloved hands in his mouth / biting the wool and I just can’t stand it

Polystyrene squeaking

Lesser extent, knives and forks scraping

Fingers squeaking on a book

Socks that feel different to each other

Wednesdayafternoon · 06/03/2022 02:19

@bellac11 I just came back to type up the wooden fork/lollipop stick situation 😰😰😰😰😰😰😰

I would also class myself as neurotypical, my son too... although with his sensory issues are a massive trigger for him at the min! It's hard to know how to encourage them to go away 😬

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing yes the sock thing!!!!
It happened to me the other day and it actually spoilt my entire day. Dramatic I know but it made me feel so on edge!

The feel and sound of paper. Just typing that out made me get goose bumps and shudder.
Bare feet on concrete/sand (the noise and feel)
And any repetitive sound that isn’t ‘normal background noise’ ie, baby crying/vacuuming noise/engine revving/ball kicking/phones pinging etc. I can’t block them put and find them incredibly distracting, to point I have to leave the room.

When I was a child I could not tolerate wool against my skin.

Diagnosed ADD as an adult.

Bellyups · 06/03/2022 02:22

Also the cardboard straws everywhere now. I can not use them at all

This thread is a nightmare for me

Yes the sock thing, they have to be exactly, EXACTLY the same thickness with the same, EXACTLY THE SAME cuff at the ankle.

Not easy when I have bought a shed load of black socks and cant tell which match with which.

And again, more retching from me thinking about the glove in mouth thing.

Lillipops · 06/03/2022 02:28

I love DP to pieces but the sound he makes when he is eating makes me want to hurt him Confused also he walks around the house when he brushes his teeth it gives me the boak and I also want to hurt him. God knows what he says about me but I love him otherwise immensely 👍

pooonastick · 06/03/2022 02:37

So many. I disguise it well so most pf my friends have no idea but..
repetitive tapping, hand movements, foot swinging., thumb twirling. Noises - mostly eating , chewing but also certain neighbours. Strangely, some neighbours make noise that doesn't annoy me and others I cant bear.

Wammawink · 06/03/2022 02:42

Lumpy mince. I just can't bear it and tend to avoid mince dishes even if I cook it down for hours. Also the sound of driving fast on the motorway in the wet it makes me feel like I'm trapped inside a tumbledryer or something It just gets inside my whole body somehow.

DramaAlpaca · 06/03/2022 03:01

Lots of things, but by far the worst for me is labels on clothes. I just can't bear the feel of them on my skin. I spend ages either cutting them out or unpicking them.

Ohh my little boy is the same with labels too!!

For me it’s:
1:Wet washing as it comes out the washing machine, especially when it kinda squeaks as it unfolds. Makes me physically sick

2: clothes that are not tumble dried especially towels. Again makes me wretch. I can’t stand it on my skin.

3: to many noises going on at once if I’m trying to do something or concentrate

4: the feeling of velvet. Yuck!!!

5: wearing socks on carpet - turns my stomach.

6: when your wearing tights and your legs rub together. In fact pretty much just tights in general.

7: sponges!!! The texture makes me feel sick

8: sometimes wearing tight clothes sets me off but only sometimes.

The list goes on 😆

OldieWordly · 06/03/2022 03:28

Hair on my forehead. Couldn't have a fringe at all as hair on my forehead makes me feel stressed and angry for some reason.

OneStepOneStumble · 06/03/2022 03:28

Yes to PPs saying wooden things in their mouth, the new bamboo cutlery makes me so supremely uncomfortable. Its making my teeth feel funny just thinking about it. DH likes to chew on wooden ice lolly sticks and if there was ever a reason for divorce...

I get a weird feeling with cloying foods in the mouth. Like eating peanut butter or anything sticky. I can be enjoying the taste but get really upset just wanting it out of my mouth because of the texture.

MotherOfWhippets · 06/03/2022 03:29

My son has a number of sensory issues and we're just exploring an ASD diagnosis - when it's being discussed my husband keeps looking pointedly at me as I have so many of the same issues - I've never been diagnosed but I think if I had been at school now I would definitely raised concerns.

I have real issues with labels in clothes - most of them are cut out.

I hate socks - in fact a lot of the time I don't wear them - even with boots in the winter - I also prefer slip on type of shoes as I feel a bit panick-y when they're tied on my feet.

I have a bit of a phobia about polystyrene- it makes me heave.

I used to have a phobia of blackcurrants - especially on top of a cheesecake 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know.

I don't like bright light. This is somewhat to do with an eye condition I have but I prefer being in the dark.

I can only cope with music etc at a certain level. I hate going somewhere that has the radio on really loud - it can literally be the difference of one 'number' on the dial and it sends me over the edge. Also if too many people are talking at once I really don't like it.

I can't have wool anywhere near me and nothing too tight around my neck.

It can be a pain sometimes but it's just the norm for me to avoid these things.

MyDisposableUsername · 06/03/2022 03:32

I cannot stand the feeling of hair on my face (my head-hair, not facial, LOL.) I just can't ignore it - makes me feel really anxious. Big problem on breezy days and during sex! Blush

Easily solved, I know, but I still keep my hair style long because with short hair I look like an absolute clone of my brother...

@Lillipops
Wouldn't it be worth talking to him about it?

If he knew how much you hated it he could stand still brushing his teeth / eat with mouth his shut. I'm sure he would hate to feel it was upsetting you so much.

CorsicaDreaming · 06/03/2022 04:59

@MotherOfWhippets - I get the blackcurrant cheesecake one. Spoiler of a good cheesecake if you ask me.

There's something about blackcurrants- they're just weird.

Wednesdayafternoon · 06/03/2022 06:39

Ahhh everyone reading through your replies has made me realise I have a much bigger list then I first wrote 🙈
Do you all consider them as sensory issue or more things that annoy you/frustrate you?

OP posts:
Rolypolyfishheads · 06/03/2022 06:41

The feel of denim on my fingers. Arrgghh!!!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 06/03/2022 07:12

I have Asperger's so I have quite a few sensory issues.

I can't wear socks without shoes. They feel tight and unnatural on my feet and I like to be able to move my toes properly.
I can't wear polo necks or scarves as I feel really restricted around my neck and like I'm suffocating.
I can't wear underwired bras because I can constantly feel the wire.
I can't wear gloves (only mittens) otherwise my fingers feel trapped. Similarly I could never wear toe socks.
I can't eat bananas as the texture makes me gag and vomit. Bananas baked in bread or as a smoothie or something are fine though.
Raw tomatoes also have a weird texture and make me gag but I love cooked tomatoes or sun dried ones.
Pads or panty liners are horrendous - can't cope with either as I hate the feeling of them and the idea of sitting in blood. Tampons only here.

There are hundreds more 🙈

Lubeyboobyalt · 06/03/2022 07:17

I have adhd

I can't stand labels in my clothes or on my bedding - if it's a soft silky one it might be ok but chances are it will still annoy me and i'll cut it off at some point

Sometimes all my clothes are unbearable full stop and I have to be in my fleece dressing gown, naked underneath

I can't bear loud noises like hammering or roadworks or even a cupboard door or drawer banging indoors
