To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

A gloriously sunny Sunday morning and I’m sat on MN reading this thread. 2022 was supposed to be our bright new beginning not a precursor to Nuclear Holocaust.

Yes, bit of a shocker, isn't it! I am taking a break now for the rest of the day to cheer myself up and gain much-needed perspective.

Millicent2022 · 06/03/2022 13:04

planning is under way ( not privy to exactly what but units are being created (like they were in pandemic ) - obviously emergency planning is happening no, not least for power loss

Phobiaphobic · 06/03/2022 13:13

You can choose to die quickly in the actual blast or slowly from all the fall out radiation.

Snog · 06/03/2022 13:17

In the 80s most government and local government buildings had so called nuclear bunkers built underneath. Many are still there. I say "so called" because the one in my city has leaked when it rained from Day 1 so wouldn't have been a great deal of use as a bunker other than possibly for the initial blast...

In the 1980s you were advised to shelter under a table. I doubt there is any further thinking from the government about the welfare of the rank and file population as I don't think they care two hoots - just as long as their cronies are protected.

@Millicent2022 Creating what units? And what are these "units" going to do in a nuclear attack?

Act as morgues?

lightand · 06/03/2022 13:28

Thanks for the replies.
If I am near enough to get there in a big hurry, I shall hurry to County Hall and try and get in!

lightand · 06/03/2022 13:31

I would take my iodide, food and water with me

bananabuddy3 · 06/03/2022 13:39

To someone a few pages back who said we can just salsa our way into oblivion, I echo your idea.

I shall down a bottle of cider, put the music on full blast through my speakers, head out in the street and dance my way out, FaceTiming family as I go. At least give everybody one last laugh. Feel free to join me. Any state of dress welcome.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/03/2022 13:39

Act as morgues

No, that's different and already in place:

National Emergency Mortuary Arrangements for dealing with any mass casualty event, eg terrorism.

I suspect it will be something like this

The vision of you and others doing this has given me a giggle.

In my mind it’ll be like that scene in Independence Day when the hippies are dancing on top of the skyscraper with welcome signs when suddenly the alien ship opens up and fires a laser which kills them all instantly 😂

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 06/03/2022 14:02

@thewiseoneincognito I reckon the nations final song of choice would either be Chumbawumba - I get knocked down or Dancing queen, we love a bit of ABBA cheese!

@AppleNo8

We have had sos smart phone alerts for years. Even if there is a small fire nearby the alarm goes off on your phone and you can check on the map where it is and instructions.

If such a system exists, why wasn't it used for Grenfell Tower?

fungh · 06/03/2022 14:12

That poster isn't in the UK

I’m in Scandinavia. I have no idea if UK have a similar system like this, but it works really well here.

I get so fed up with all the Government bashing. So how would you deal with this situation? Just like Starmer & Co, there are few valid suggestions, just like Starmer & Co you are turning a tragedy into a political football.
I think the government dealt pretty well with the horror of COVID. I bet you all took your furlough, ‘working’ from home, free vaccines, free tests. Or if you are on benefits, took the additional money to feed YOUR kids while they were not receiving free school meals, only to complain when they returned to school and it was stopped. As a shielder, I even had food parcels delivered every week courtesy of the government, until I stopped them.
Now they are trying to avoid all-out war which has to be a good thing. It isn’t going to be easy because they are dealing with a nutter.
And Ukrainian refugees ARE welcome here, but the majority want to stay closer to home where many have family and friends and from where, hopefully, they can return home one day.

fungh · 06/03/2022 14:20

I don't understand this point, are you saying people shouldn't have tested if they don't think Boris is a good PM?

Did you not read any other papers during that whole time?

No, I am saying that we were provided with all of these things by a good PM
