To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

Things won't be great, but we certainly won't be as fucked as the rest of you!

Yes you will, sorry.

yoolia · 06/03/2022 09:02

But there's no point in arguing about it tbh because it won't happen.

Partyatnumber10 · 06/03/2022 09:04

They'll have a plan and shelters to stay in until things clear. If you don't know about it now though, you're not getting in.
They have I believe lists of people they need to keep alive and then basic procedure for the r

Polyanthus2 · 06/03/2022 09:04

I would imagine the southern hemisphere will do much better than the north.

So NZ, Aus, African countries, S America. But not sure how much better much better will be long term.

notimagain · 06/03/2022 09:05

@Satsumaeater

We Scots in the central belt would be the first to go as Faslane Naval Base is a prime target. We will be praying we get Independence before there’s a nuclear war

Faslane wouldn't be the target because the subs are generally on the open seas, they're not all sitting there waiting to be nuked themselves. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be a target. But I live near a variety of Army and RAF bases, so I am probably close to a target too.

TBH without knowing what the Russian targeting policy might be and then getting a sneak peep at the relevant Russian target list, and what weapon would be used where nobody knows if where they live in the UK is as safe as it gets or not or is a certain target or not.

Bizarrely there are one or two credible scenarios where London might be, relatively, as “safe” as it gets, compared with other population centers in the UK at least initially.

If it’s an all out strike though it’s bad news for everybody.

Partyatnumber10 · 06/03/2022 09:05

For the rest of us is to die as quietly as possible.
Nuclear winter will be horrible to live through though so personally dying quickly sounds preferable.
I won't happen though!

katepilar · 06/03/2022 09:08

Dont know about the UK. In my country the most of the shelters are either shut down or not funcional. Also they apparently wouldnt function against modern nuclear attack.
I realised I actually wouldnt be happy to be in a underground shelter with lots of people and rely on maschines to get some air in. I hope if it comes it either kills me straight away or that I survive reasonably fit. I just hope I wont end up in between with bad injuries.

Whatamesssss · 06/03/2022 09:12

@70kid

I just finished reading James Herbert Domain About nuclear war and giant rats Apparently radiation doesn’t affect rats 😂 So if you survive you might have to slog it out with man eating rats 😂
I read that book as a teenager and it scared the shit out if me. Not the nuclear stuff but the giant killer rats, I had nightmares for months.
Musicalmaestro · 06/03/2022 09:12

There will be advice on hand washing and wearing a mask....

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/03/2022 09:14

@AtlasPine

I don’t want my dog to suffer. He’s so pure and good. I can’t even BEAR to think of my grandchildren or their parents being caught in one. I’m not too bothered for myself as I’m at the other end of life.

Agree that there will be bunkers but only for the elite, royalty and those in parliament. What an awful bunch to repopulate the country afterwards.

Quite. I'm not sure what the point of saving the queen/royal family is Hmm Bunch of inbred philanderers, what kind of 'society' would government and the royal family create? Nothing I want to be part of.
katepilar · 06/03/2022 09:17

Anyway there wouldnt be enough time to get anywhere, I am pretty sure. If a nuclear rocket can get accross the ocean from the US to Europe in 45 mins, it would be a matter of minutes to Europe from Russia. I can make it into our cellar but only if I knew. I am not sure if trying to get into the underground that is under 10 mins away would be enough.

KatherineofGaunt · 06/03/2022 09:22

Reading this makes me want to stock up on pills so I and my family can fall asleep and die rather than potentially live through any kind of aftermath.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 06/03/2022 09:25

The size of the nuclear weapons that exist today make the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki look like children’s toys. I’m sorry to say that if a bomb was dropped on London the blast would go as far as the Home Counties (maybe further?). Then the nuclear winter which follows would be vile.

My DP has been looking at how to make shelters, I told him if the warning goes off, we get in the car and drive towards the blast. Better to go quickly than linger on and die slowly.

Having said all of that, I don’t expect it will come to nukes. Putin may be an absolute loon and be prepared to use nukes but with MAD, those around him won’t. I cannot believe it is a simple as one person pressing a big red button either. There must be balances and checks in place. Whilst Putin may have nothing to lose, I don’t think this is the case for those toads around him.

Esspee · 06/03/2022 09:27

@Esspee

We Scots in the central belt would be the first to go as Faslane Naval Base is a prime target. We will be praying we get Independence before there’s a nuclear war because one of the first things that will happen when Scotland reverts to being an independent country is that we will send all the nuclear submarines to England probably Milford Haven.
Yes it was a joke. So well done to those who got it. The nuclear submarine base was foisted on Scotland so when we send them back (metaphorically speaking) you can bet your bottom dollar it won’t be located in England.
brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 06/03/2022 09:27

Not even sure the underground would help Londoners. The firestorm on the surface will consume oxygen from the air in the tunnels and aspyxiate those down below.

You don’t want fallout dust on your skin for long periods or getting a inside your body. After the first 2 weeks if you have to leave your shelter you should shower-decontaminate with a hose before re-entering. But there won’t be enough water for that.

We‘re basically over if these idiots decide using these weapons is a good idea. If we were truly a civilised species we‘d disarm and destroy these weapons, unilaterally if necessary. Be the change and all that…

fungh · 06/03/2022 09:28

Yeah i don't think a bunker in the vicinity would help. Plus as other pps said surviving it initially is likely worse.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 06/03/2022 09:30

Fuck me, the farce we made of covid or a bit of snow.
Imagine the supermarkets would be full of people buying toilet rolls or salads again.
I'm thinking we'd be ok, we live rurally and have rice. Grin Rural won't be attacked.
Although in all seriousness I think the west will have a direct skirmish with Putin. I'll be surprised if we don't.

Redwinestillfine · 06/03/2022 09:30

I would hope they have a plan, and have recently reviewed it and updated.

Redwinestillfine · 06/03/2022 09:31

Better however to have your own plan.

Pedallleur · 06/03/2022 09:32

It's been planned and updated for 60 yrs. Royal Family abroad, bunker for the Cabinet etc. But negotiation would be better. It really is the last resort if a sovereign nation goes nuclear

fungh · 06/03/2022 09:33

Rural won't be attacked.

It will be by the survivors! 😆

DottyHarmer · 06/03/2022 09:35

Pointless planning. Looking at Chernobyl the children born afterwards, even years afterwards, had birth defects and cancer. My friends gave a “Chernobyl child” a holiday every year and one thing they had to do was take them for dental work as the children’s teeth grew as black stumps. Terrible.

Branster · 06/03/2022 09:35

Although I don't think Russia would start a nuclear attack at present, looking at their current military arsenal on display, I do wonder how shit their nuclear attack system could actually be in reality.

Might even fire backwards.

Still disastrous though.

[quote OrangeCinnamonCroissant]Does anyone remember this book (and the televised version)

Yes, such a sad story. My own nuclear attack plan, based entirely on the film, would be to die asap.

Esspee · 06/03/2022 09:36

@notimagain. @Satsumaeater. There is normally one nuclear sub on patrol, one preparing to take over, one on standby and one in refit.
