DH routinely reuses stamps. His excitement when an envelope arrives and the stamp isn't marked is a wonder to behold.

Franking is the enemy.

What cheeky things do you do to save the pennies?

Actually cheeky: ASD DC refuses to eat chips at school on Friday because they're unsalted which means they actually go hungry, so I snaffle a couple of sachets of salt each time I'm in a takeaway and secrete them in blazer pocket

We used to do this in school too😂 we’d come out with our mcds salt sachets and put salt on the chips because they had no taste at all

BookkeeperBobby · 06/03/2022 13:11

People like you make Jamie Oliver cry 😩

CharacterForming · 06/03/2022 13:15

I think Mr Oliver would also cry if he had to eat flabby school canteen chips with no seasoning whatsoever.

mycatisannoying · 06/03/2022 13:16

When my girls were little, and I took them to a chain coffee shop for hot chocolate, I used to ask for a large hot chocolate split into two cups. It was much cheaper than having to buy two mediums.

woodhill · 06/03/2022 13:17

My dh used to take the ikea pencils

Used to drive me mad as we had plenty of them at home

Mimijamroll · 06/03/2022 13:17

Like the pp who nicks sachets of salt, I always nick a couple of sachets of brown sugar when having a coffee.

@Proudboomer

25 years ago when my children were babies and there was no cheap primak or supermarket baby clothes as they outgrew their sleep suits and baby grows I would cut the feet off and get a few more months wear out of them. I would unwind knitted jumpers and re use the wool to knit larger jumpers and cardigans. Couldn’t afford wipes so used flannels which were cut up old towels. The cot sheets were cut down bedsheets which had worn through at the bottom . For Everyone I knew at the time with young children money was pretty tight so no one turned their nose up at a bag of hand me downs or a secondhand cot or pram. Where as now you often see people turning their nose up at these items and even on here mother moan about being given free hand me downs like someone is committing a crime against them.
Most people I know did that with babygrows and sleep suits, a pair of socks or even a pair of tights kept them warm at night if needed.
SouthParkCovid · 06/03/2022 13:19

My stepdad used to shoplift regularly from the same shop. He used to pinch a bar of chocolate and packet of crisps. He thought he got away with it until about a year later...

Apparently now shops wait until you have stolen enough money's worth to prosecute you.

He went to court and paid a fortune in fines etc.

So beware pastry stealing lady! They may be watching you!

I used to collect a few of their tapes measures too, very useful in my classroom.

@JudgeJ Ikea will give you virtually any of the cheaper / clearence stuff for schools / nurseries if you ask them. Got a large box of wooden toys the other day and a toy kitchen with a few scuff marks.

god i hate him, its his fault i had to pay for packed lunch in primary even tho my son gets free school meals, kids would rather starve then eat plain baked potatoes and sweet potato fries.
BookkeeperBobby · 06/03/2022 13:29

Shops can wait until you've stolen loads before they prosecute it's true. This is what happened to Worrall-Thompson for eg. Everything is on camera now including at self service tills and they just keep the footage.

Royal Mail secret invisible stamping and special detecting machines is a story straight out of the Big Book Of Enid Blyton Spycraft though. RM put it out to the media every now and again to try and discourage people from reusing stamps but it really doesn't exist. Stamp fraud is and counterfeit stamps are a problem and there are measures in place to try and mitigate losses, but they don't include James Bond scanning machines.

StScholastica · 06/03/2022 13:37

Ooh Yes, IKEA paper tape measures! I might have liberated a few of these in my time to measure oedema in my NHS clinic. Smile
I reason that IKEA are nice people and wouldn't mind helping the NHS out a bit. Blush

To whoever mentioned freezing left over wine? What is left over wine? It's not a concept I'm familiar with.

Lillyhatesjaz · 06/03/2022 13:45

If you buy non dairy milk it's much cheaper to buy in from the long life milk section than the fridge. The only difference is the shape of the carton

Crankley · 06/03/2022 13:48

What a horrible thread. From people tight as arseholes who take their own teabags to a cafe and ask for hot water to straightforward theft.

For those of you so pleased with yourselves for stealing from supermarkets and thus contributing to higher prices, my dearest wish is for you to be stopped by a security guard in front of someone who you would really rather not want to know that you're a grubby little thief. Maybe your boss or your child's teacher?

This I thought was really great, more power to you:

I really wanted a Miele tumble dryer but a new one was not within my means. So I searched until I found one for sale, broken, 30 miles away and taught myself basic electronics with a few youtube videos and replaced the thermostat with a £20 part. It's still merrily going on, 3 years later and I am most pleased with my cheapskate self.

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 06/03/2022 13:53

@CarolinaStabril

I sometimes put birthday cards under my shopping bags so I don’t have to pay for them
@CarolinaStabril

Admitting to being a low life shoplifting scumbag is not saving money. It's dishonest and embarassing.

Let's hope you get caught next time.

ToMockAKillingBird · 06/03/2022 13:55

Back in the day, I used to drink 20/20, Thunderbird or something equally as cheap and alcoholic at home before going Out Out

Thunderbird and 20 20,thats a proper blast from the past. Also bottles of peach Concord wine Grin

I don’t think Martin Lewis will be picking up many of these top tips for money saving.😂 Especially the ones by proud shoplifters.

Or Turkey twizlers
TheOccupier · 06/03/2022 14:03
@Landedonfeet because I’m on my way to work. I don’t want to carry a thermos for my whole journey into work but rather make the commute into work and get it from the shops right next to my workplace. I’d sometimes get breakfast from there too so I’d be in there anyway. May as well ask for hot water and pop my teabag in once I arrive at my office
But surely your office has a kettle? Confused

Imagine, save a whopping 99p by stealing an extra cake in the self checkout, potential downsides, a criminal record...Grin
Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2022 14:12

Yes @LondonQueen, Phillip and Holly would be sitting there riveted. Grin
Bathe with your underwear on, under pay for half of your shopping at the self checkout and steal some shopping bags. That should help to offset the energy price increases.
