Daughters school not doing world book day

So my daughters school never do world book day - AIBU to be disappointed?
I imagine some parents will be relieved but my daughter gets upset when she sees the costumes in Sainsbury’s or sees other kids in their costumes.

It’s not just world book day- it’s also children in need & Red Nose Day. The school won’t do anything in fact none of it even gets mentioned - it’s like it’s not happening.

Would you feel disappointed?

WIBU for me to contact the head teacher and ask why? I don’t want to be that parent

I’ve mentioned it to other parents and they agree and say it’s a shame but they don’t seem as bothered by it as me

We moved schools this last year and only just found they don’t do dress up for WBD. I’ll be honest I’m crushed. So our my kids. I think all the reasons people give here in support of no WBD are joy-kills. It a fun tradition, and I’m very sad my kids are being deprived of it.

Good for them. I'd like to see research that shows any educational benefit from these dress up days.

This.

If you want to dress up you can have your own fancy dress parties.

Why do people feel the need to impose their wants and interests on others?

"Crushed"? Seriously?

Yep! I was really disappointed for my children. They spend all year talking about and planning what they will wear. It’s always been one of their favourite days of the year. It never even occurred to me the new school wouldn’t participate. They didn’t tell us until 1 week prior and by then my children had already started to put their outfits together. And to those saying they can dress up after school or at the supermarket, don’t be daft. You know it’s not the same and not nearly as much fun. I feel bad for all you people who seem to hate fun.

WBD traditions have been going on a long time. Pretty sure it’s all you party-poopers who are trying to impose their wants on others by taking away this fun school tradition.

I hated these days particularly as a grandparent carer as did my grandsons who found it utterly humiliating to be forced to dress up as they got older. It was the continual push for cash all the time, asking for cakes, money, donations for stalls, etc. Not only that but the ridiculous competition between parents who would bitch about who got a prize for the best outfit. We even had parents dying their childrens' hair. I am pleased to hear that the Headteacher is understanding of peoples' situations in the current climate.

I'm struggling to believe that there are really children who spend all yeartalking about and planning their outfit for World Book Day.

Really? I think they perhaps need a little more to look forward to the rest of the year given it's one of many opportunities to dress up when you're young.

It's not a tradition and the sooner most realise it's just become another marketing opportunity and sales opportunity for big stores the better. It's literally just a mechanism to make money between valentine's and mother's day/Easter.

My child is in a school in a fairly poor catchment area with lots of families struggling.

Red nose day/children in need- children are just asked to wear odd and/or brightly coloured socks and we have the option to donate a pound but it isn't mandatory.

Before world book day a letter went home saying "please remember that lots of book characters just wear normal clothes" or something like that. There are ways to do things low key rather than not at all.

This.

How about the fact that it’s fun and that the majority of them love it? FFS. There are some miserable gits on here

bridgetreilly · 02/03/2023 21:54

Do a fancy dress birthday party for her. School is for school.

ggmom87 · 03/03/2023 07:02

Yes exactly this. It doesn’t have to cost money, so I don’t understand why it has to be taken away altogether.

ggmom87 · 03/03/2023 07:03

Learning and school can and should be fun too.

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/03/2023 07:27

I worked at a school - no longer do for my own sanity!

A lot of schools do Red Nose Day, children in need, school fun raisers, world book day, dates, Christmas discos, spring discos, school trips, swimming lessons, first aid, cycling, Christmas panto, Christmas crafts, sports day, forest school. and more …. Add in assembly, resignations, breaks, lunch,

All cause over excitement and disrupt lessons.

They are in school 139 days - how much fun days do you think they should have? They have families and weekends and parent could do some of these things to free up time for their education.

cravingtoblerone · 03/03/2023 07:54

Our school doesn't do dressing up on WBD because lots of families can't afford it.

They always have lots of fun, reading-based activities though, so the kids really enjoy it.

I see everyone’s point actually about wbd

What about comic relief and children in need? Surely raising money for charity should be encouraged?

It depends on the charity.

Children in need give to a charity that I have problems with so I don't give to them.
