To think that voting yanbu on a clearly emotive thread and not putting your opinion to your vote is cowardly.

Yes, a particular thread has triggered this thread, however I’ve seen it so many times where a poster posts something which is very emotional, i.e. in the most recent example about pro life protesters harassing people outside a maternity clinic, where there is almost a unanimous “yanbu” vote because actually, the OP is so clearly not being unreasonable that it should be 100%.

However, on these threads there is almost always a 1 or 2% yabu vote, but the poster/s voting clearly don’t have the balls to own up to their vile opinions and so hide behind their vote.

Surely, if you believe that you’re right enough to vote yabu on something so emotive, then you should stop being such a bloody coward and state or opinion?

Or piss off.

OP posts:

I always assume it’s a mistake when you see the 1% tbf. Didn’t consider it may be their actual view

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 16:34

I'm not sure it's ever a good idea to take too much notice of the voting in AIBU.
People might vote YABU for someone posting in AIBU when it's nothing of the sort. Or their finger clicked the wrong button, or they don't like the OP. Or just for fun because they're weird like that.

It's an easily rectifiable mistake. All that needs to be done it's click yanbu instead.
Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 16:43

If they even realise @FluffyBooBoo they probably don’t go back to check.

WomanStanleyWoman · 04/03/2022 16:45

There are always more votes than there are comments. Is it only very controversial threads where people should have to justify their vote? Is it okay not to bother if it’s a thread about a MIL popping in uninvited?

I’ve no time for the pro-life lobby, but unfortunately we can’t force them to justify their opinions. If an OP is told by 98% of people that they are NBU, do they really worry about the 2%?

LemonViolet · 04/03/2022 16:47

I’ve been here 15 years and had no idea you could alter your vote once you’d clicked one

ButtockUp · 04/03/2022 16:49

I must admit I never vote; I just pass comment or leave.

FluffyBooBoo · 04/03/2022 16:51

I've seen plenty of people post to say that they voted wrongly, so there are definitely people that do realise and don't know they can change it.
Redcrayons · 04/03/2022 16:51

I voted by Mistake before and I didn’t know you could change it
Does anyone really take much notice?

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 04/03/2022 16:52

No one is required to submit a comment. This is a public site and voting has been enabled regardless of whether you want to type out anything to back up your opinion.

There could be numerous reasons why they don't agree. I personally am pro choice and haven't read the thread, but just voting and not commenting isn't going to ALWAYS be simple cowardice.

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 16:54

I have seen it maybe a handful of times where someone’s changed their mind but assumed they would go back and change it.
But as I said I never really take much notice of the voting.
Especially when it’s not a true AIBU. So they’re using the vote thing as some dirt if weird poll.

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 16:54

*sort

Cornettoninja · 04/03/2022 16:58

Sometimes I vote then read the comments and find I’ve got nothing more to add to what’s already been posted. I don’t really see the point of post after the post basically repeating the same things. I like to read a decent discussion so I’m not prone to adding stuff that even I don’t find interesting 🤷‍♀️

ClariceQuiff · 04/03/2022 16:59

I didn't read the thread in question so can't comment on that.

In a general sense, the 'contrary' votes might be from people who are sceptical about the authenticity of a thread, but can't say so on the thread without breaking TGs.

Or on the 'WIBU to give up my seat on the bus to an elderly lady with a broken leg' type threads, it might just mean 'your virtue-signalling is annoying me'.

EmpressCixi · 04/03/2022 16:59

Yes I agree with that. ‘What a ridiculous thread, my vote is YABU for posting it at all…’
Arabellla · 04/03/2022 17:02

It’s very apparent on threads about racism. The racists vote YABU but eon’t have the balls to state their opinion.

People can post and/or vote as they want to.

Other people are free to draw conclusions, but not to proscribe others choices

I agree with this. Many people won't comment, as they know they will be lambasted for their views.

I have seen threads (like about Brexit for example,) saying 'AIBU to wish we were back in the EU?' and a THIRD of almost 1200 posters voted for YABU (so all these people are glad we are NOT in the EU still.) But not many of the almost 400 people who are glad we're out of the EU, said anything, and that's because they know they will be lambasted, ridiculed, slated, and called a thick, racist bigot.

With the way some people on here react towards people who go against the mumsnet majority, it's hardly surprising that people just click on YABU but put no comments.

Kite22 · 04/03/2022 17:50

I think @MurmuratingStarling makes a good point.

I'm entitled to my opinion. I don't have to justify it to you or anyone.

tyoy · 04/03/2022 19:53

I don't have the voting function but there are always people who like to be contrary & some people are just dicks so 100% will be happen.

This.
I just saw the thread in question. Any one who admitted being pro life on that thread would be absolutely ripped to shreds! The tone wasn't about wanting to understand an alternative point of view, it was about wanting to tell someone how vile they are!
