He was only 52

One of the greatest cricketers of all time. I saw him play in an Ashes series. A real game changer in every sense.

Horrible shock yesterday and I'm not even a cricket fan.

derxa · 05/03/2022 12:10

@DontBlameMe79

Good to see his appalling treatment of women over the years being glossed over…it’s all Go Warnie! He was such a character! And we wonder why we’re treated badly so often.
Oh get over yourself
DontBlameMe79 · 05/03/2022 12:24

derxz : our ability to excuse unforgivable behaviour by men is appalling and Warne is a great example of this. Leaving his family, endless allegations of harassment via sexting and goodness knows what. Makes my blood boil now they get away with it - BUT WE LET THEM.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2022 13:11

It’s sad as he was very young but he had a good life though. Definitely lived it to the full!

I don't. There's a difference between appreciating the talent of a great sportsman and getting involved with people like him
loobylou10 · 05/03/2022 13:20

@DontBlameMe79 there's a time and a place for your comments - this thread is neither. Stop it - a man has died, have some respect.

Ncwinc · 05/03/2022 13:27

He was an awesome cricketer.

EsmeGythaMagrat · 05/03/2022 13:28

I’m rather shocked about how upset I am about it tbh.
My DS8 is a leg spinner and loved watching Warne on the TV, especially when he was talking about the intricacies of his action.
Absolute game changer of a player.
I suppose it’s because he was so full of life that it’s hard to imagine that he’s gone at such a young age. I only hope it was swift and pain free.

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 05/03/2022 13:38

Exactly. Honestly so disrespectful on a thread about his death.

cptartapp · 05/03/2022 13:48

Gonnagetgoibg
He was a smoker (at one time at least), and admitted he liked his beer. Also read his diet wasn't the best and Xmas lunch was 'lasagne sandwiches'. Likely his coronary arteries were simply clogged up over the years. Early 50's is often when these things catch up with you. Sadly.

If only he had had respect for women when he was alive.

If this thread is about reflecting on his life it should balance his outstanding talent for chucking a bit of leather up a strip of turf with his dreadful treatment of women. That’s why I don’t think my comments are out of place.

I am not defending the sexting or harassment issues but I decline to accept your assertion that he left his family. He divorced, yes, but there was never any suggestion he abandoned his children.

(Why are we doing this at all, this is a thread about a brilliant sportsman who died at a very young age)

'That’s why I don’t think my comments are out of place'

They really are out of place less than 24 hours after his death in my opinion.

derxa · 05/03/2022 14:13

That’s why I don’t think my comments are out of place. You make the mistake of thinking sports people should be 'role models'. Anyway SW was punished for his chaotic lifestyle. He was banned for a year for taking diuretics. Sacked from a pundit job because of affairs. And he was never the Australian cricket captain even though he should have been.

CarlCarlson · 05/03/2022 14:20

You sound bitter as fuck tbh @dontblameme79

RIP Warnie. Legend of a cricketer, legend of a man

Ncwinc · 05/03/2022 14:20

I appreciate this a lot more now than I did then.

Onlywomengivebirth · 05/03/2022 14:48

@AladdinPrincess999

Ive just seen this in the papers. So sad. I remember him when I was little. RIP.

He only posted a tweet 14 hours ago, saying RIP to someone else. Now he's gone. So sad.

Rod Marsh.. another great cricketer. One of the original World Series Cricketers. Also very sad.

You might not think so but other people do. You also clearly have no idea of the skill involved in spin bowling if you think he was 'chucking a bit of leather up a strip of turf'.

RIP Shane Warne, one of the best cricketers ever the game has ever seen.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/03/2022 15:10

Don’t blame me
Shane Warne may have been a flawed character but he wasn’t simply a good cricketer he was an outstanding one. There are many people who would argue he was the greatest spin bowler the game has ever seen. So maybe he did chuck a bit of leather up a strip of turf but he did it better than anyone else and entertained millions whilst he did so.

I've been listening to Jiggery Pokery in tribute to him.

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/03/2022 15:58

Legend of a cricketer but a very flawed man and I think its disrespectful to victims of harrassment to gloss over it.

Condolences to his family.

HighOnPie · 05/03/2022 16:16

@Helendee

I was on my way back from the school run when a big, flash white car stopped to let me cross the road, I thanked the driver and the window slowly rolled down, out popped Shane Warne’s cheeky face, he grinned at me from ear to ear, winked and said “Nice!”as he drove off. He was in my City for a match at our county ground. 😁
