What is happening to my hands?!

Jobseeker19 · 03/03/2022 19:01

Posting for traffic but please help.

For 6 months I have had peeling, cracked skin on one of my hands. I couldn't remember how it happened except that it was on one finger and then spread to the others I thought maybe I burnt them or touched something.

I have tried ALL of the good intensive creams (Working hands, Neutrageana Swiss formula, Garnier intensive, Vaseline). And only Garnier seems to keep them from cracking and bleeding but not healing. I also have to apply all day long or they will bleed.

I've also said fuck it maybe its the creams and went cold turkey. Which caused them to crack all over. I've also worn gloves to bed with cream and tried using differnt soaps and even not using soap as often too.

Then today I felt a blister type pain on my other hand and saw a small red sore. And then I remembered how it began on my first hand.

Please help. The skin is very thin and I cannot open things with one hand. I'm scared for the other. Its very hard to get a GP appointment.

Have you tried a pharmacy?

TillyTopper · 03/03/2022 19:04

Have you been to the pharmacist and showed them your hand and asked for advice? Possibly it could be an infection like athlete's foot - but obv on your hand). Could be you don't need to moisturize at all.

picklemewalnuts · 03/03/2022 19:05

It could be a fungal infection, a vitamin deficiency, or a reaction/allergy to something.

Best to check at pharmacy and see whether an anti fungal is indicated, then go to GP. You've done all you can.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 03/03/2022 19:06

It could be an allergy or a fungal infection.

I would go and see a pharmacist.

My hands sometimes get covered in little blisters, it's called pomphylox.

Jobseeker19 · 03/03/2022 19:10

I will go to the pharmacy tomorrow. I honestly thought it was a serious dry skin problem until I saw the new mark on my other hand.

Hi, having googled that I dont think it is that. The skin is flat and not pus filled.

I had something like this OP, started on one finger and then spread across four on one hand over 6 months. In the end it was diagnosed as a type of eczema - I had steroid cream which helped but it eventually went away of its own accord two summers later. Cleaning products etc made it worse but I never found out what caused it. I hope you find something that helps - I remember it being incredibly uncomfortable and stinging.

TheFlis12345 · 03/03/2022 19:16

Could it be an allergic reaction? Mine turned like that rapidly when I was younger. We eventually traced it to the same brand of soap we’d been using without issue for years.

FangsForTheMemory · 03/03/2022 19:18

I've got something similar. No GP has ever managed to find anything to stop it, but this stuff prevents it from cracking and bleeding. www.boots.com/okeeffes-working-hands-value-size-jar-193g-10238658?cm_mmc=bmm-buk-google-ppc--PLAs_HeroCompare--Hand_Body-_-UK_Smart_Shopping_Skincare_Hand_Body&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0Nnq9dOq9gIVuYFQBh2ZDAoKEAQYAiABEgKbO_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

OfstedOffred · 03/03/2022 19:18

I had a phase when my hands went like this. I tried everything but nothing really made a difference. It went in the summer.

Cherrysoup · 03/03/2022 19:19

The redness looks like chilblains. Have you tried O’Keefes’ Working Hands? It heals cracks on my hands. Any cream containing urea tends to do that.

KatherineofGaunt · 03/03/2022 19:20

It looks like eczema. But you should go to your pharmacist and ask for their professional opinion.

LadyIckenham · 03/03/2022 19:20

I used to get that, although haven't for a while. I have suffered from eczema on my hands forever, though, so just presumed it was connected to that and it went away eventually.

I use dermalex now which is awesome stuff but don't know if it would have worked on that.

Reluctantadult · 03/03/2022 19:23

Was going to say exzema on the basis of my sisters, she went to the doctor, was prescribed steroid cream and an emollient moisturiser and told to use cream then put gloves on at night.

Overtheroadroundthecorner · 03/03/2022 19:23

Eczema/dermatitis. That’s exactly how my hands started, I’ve now had it for 6 years and it started after a stressful period. I’m sorry to say nothing except steroids work but they were becoming an issue with skin thinning. I use them when desperate now and otherwise live with as best as I can.

TheUsualShitshow · 03/03/2022 19:23

Yes that's how mine looked; it's a kind of dermatitis.

Jobseeker19 · 03/03/2022 19:24

Hi, yes I've used O'Keefes Working hands and it doesn't do anything.

I'm quite worried to hear that it lasted for years for some people 😕

My hubbys hands are like this with his eczema get some steroid cream on your hands to clear it then diprobase cream to help prevent avoid washing dishes

Alopeciabop · 03/03/2022 19:34

Sunflower oil. Put it on several times a day.

bumbledeedum · 03/03/2022 19:39

I get something similar and in my nails and it's a form of psoriasis apparently (which I don't have anywhere else). I think a lot of things can look similar so really ought to see a professional. A pharmacist will very likely refer you to a GP if it's in more than 2 fingers (this is what happened to me).

nongnangning · 03/03/2022 19:51

As PP said, could be psoriasis

YisforWanky · 03/03/2022 19:52

Are you taking any medications, OP?
