Apparently Tuna isn’t a suitable food for a primary aged DC (Lighthearted AIBU?)

This is from ExH after he video called DD (Aged 7, Year 3) and she told him she’d had tuna pasta for tea (her favourite).

His text to me says that he doesn’t think Tuna is the right food to be feeding a primary aged child.

I asked him if he’d looked at the school menu for lunches recently. Tuna Sandwiches and Tuna Jacket potatoes available every day, three times in the 4 week menu there’s some sort of Tuna Pasta Dish available on the hot menu, it’s very popular from what I’ve been told.

DD often opts for the tuna dish if it’s there.

No reply.

But am I being UR to give DD tuna? I know I'm not don't worry!

For context, tonights was fresh from the fish monger this morning but I do use tinned as well. There was also sweetcorn, tomatoes and peppers in it as well as a tomato sauce I make myself.

Some of us have DC with very limited ranges (no they're not fussy, no they wouldn't eat it if they were starving).
Tuna is on my Ds's 'approved list'. If its on the list I dont give a monkeys how many times a week he has it.

There are pollutants and additives in so many foods. Vegan manufactured food ingredients often look like a chemistry book.
I know this is light hearted. But honestly you're probably best saying 'thanks so much, I just hadn't realised and I'm glad you let me know'
And then just carry on as you were!

CourtRand · 03/03/2022 22:52

@Angrymum22

Tinned tuna is fine the canning process gets rid of any mercury that has built up in the flesh. Fresh tuna is not so safe.
Apparently that's not true
Crystalgirl90 · 04/03/2022 17:37

What on earth is he on about? That is so strange and confusing. Food is food?

CloR86 · 04/03/2022 17:51

My 8 month old baby has had tuna for tea this evening

Bangolads · 04/03/2022 17:57

He sounds like a pain but also what @Mundra said.

mylifestory · 04/03/2022 18:20

Just doing it to wind u up. Ignore it and move on

WouldIwasShookspeared · 04/03/2022 18:22

Did your ex ever reply?

PlntLady · 04/03/2022 18:33

😂 I'm loving this thread!
As someone who has been in a very controlling relationship I can sympathise. I have no doubt the reason he will give will be either a) bullshit or b) no responce. It's a classic way to try to continue to control you.
I work with chemicals and have a good understanding of what chemicals are in our food chain due to pesticides, food packaging, etc. Have no fear - a portion of tuna will be doing your child much more good than it will be doing harm. And for all those insinuating you are poisoning your child - unless you eat completely organic and unprocessed food, get food with no packaging, no processed foods, no heating food in plastic of teflon... I guarantee there are worse things you should be concerned about than the metal content in a single portion of tuna!
Lol. So many MNs living in glass houses. 😂

MrsBizzyBody · 04/03/2022 18:40

OMG how terrible🤣. I wish my kids would entertain the idea of tuna instead of plain pasta no sauce nothing on it. They are a similar age. Very easy for ExH to have opinions from afar what an idiot. Is he vegetarian or vegan or worried about mercury? I assume you done give it to them every night?

DoorWasAJar · 04/03/2022 18:48

@Angrymum22 The canning process removes the mercury?!?! How on earth does it do that? Btw, it’s arsenic too and other heavy metals and contaminants and they’re not magically removed by canning Confused

TheKeatingFive · 04/03/2022 18:51

Tell him to take his thoughts to SS if he's so concerned 😆

1forAll74 · 04/03/2022 19:11

Oh dear, I love tuna, I have been eating it since I was a child in the last war, when it became available then, I am 79 now and still eat it regularly. My late Mum some times managed to get a tin of salmon after the war ended, but I always wanted some tuna instead.

When my Mum managed to find some tinned salmon in the oldie days, it just had to be used for Sunday tea, either on a sandwich, or with some salad stuff,.

BOOTS52 · 04/03/2022 19:16

He sounds like a right dickhead. Just wants to put you down. Tell him to feck off. Tuna is healthy once not more than few times a week. Really good for your child. It does not really matter what you feed her as none of his business and why is he questioning her about what she is eating. Lucky he is an ex and can see why he is an ex. Am guessing he would argue with himself just to have the last word and thinks he is always right.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/03/2022 19:30

Well i'm not sure I could eat a whole tuna and I'm almost two adults (according to the bathroom scales).
Next time I would suggest you remove the head and tail (of the tuna, not your child) to make it a tad more manageable.

Shrekprincess · 04/03/2022 19:32

What can eating tuna do to you? People are mentioning mercury, arsenic and heavy metals etc. so can eating tuna make you sick? Is that temporarily or long term? Can it kill you?

I've eaten tuna regularly through my life and I'm fine. Most people are.
Mandyjack · 04/03/2022 20:22

Wouldn't say its unsuitable but too much tuna can be harmful, especially for a child. I wouldn't give it more than once a week

Some people have got very sick. A work colleague was regularly ill and her physio suggested stopping tuna and she was fine after.
bellac11 · 04/03/2022 20:25

I dont know that its correct to say 'most people are fine' if we mean health wise? we are actuallly quite an unhealthy nation (and I say that as someone who does eat tuna)

NannaKaren · 04/03/2022 21:08

He’s just being a twit!

whattodo2019 · 04/03/2022 21:23

Is he saying this because tuna can have high mercury contents?

CowboyJo · 04/03/2022 21:44

I have never heard of tuna making people sick.

Is this the same sort of hysteria as "do not eat raw eggs"? My DDs have licked countless cake mixes Blush

HTH1 · 04/03/2022 21:55

Could there possibly be a reason why he’s an ex? Maybe if he sends you a full list of his menu items for DD (including all drinks, snacks etc), you’ll be able to feed her to his standards Wink

Mundra · 05/03/2022 01:13

Mercury, arsenic and heavy metals leave the body at very slow rates. Once they've been consumed, they stay in you, and subsequent eating of tuna increases the concentration of those contaminants in your body. It takes about six months for mercury to be processed out of us.
The FSA have released guidelines (they're linked in the article from the guardian I posted yesterday) and tuna is safe to eat, provided you limit how much you have.

RachaelN · 05/03/2022 06:14

He is being a dick and questioning your parenting just to wind you up. Tell him to stfu.
