World Book Day

popcorndiva · 03/03/2022 15:34

When did World Book Day become wear something from a Marvel/Disney/Pixar movie Day

Is it just me that thinks the amount of screen time children get now that schools should encourage purely books today not films .

I remember when I was young dressing up was not a thing we did a sponsored spellings or reading etc. The focus was on literacy anyway.

AIBU - it's just fun and kids don't read books now
YABU - yes it's annoying kids should be Book characters only

Neither - YABU, most kids still read plenty of books, but most parents are either too busy or too poor to whip up a book character for the sake of one gimmicky day, whereas most kids will have a Disney costume kicking around somewhere they can put on.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 03/03/2022 15:39

Neither

Kids might be wearing marvel because that's what they already own

Or perhaps they do have books with those characters in.

Marvel is of course originally a publisher

Are you saying kids should dress up only as characters who originated from books not comics? What about picture books?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/03/2022 15:40

We definitely don’t need more rules made to make WBD harder!

BeHappy91818 · 03/03/2022 15:41

There are books with the Disney princess/marvel characters in…

It’s a bit of fun for the kids. Lighten up.

Whatsonmymindgrapes · 03/03/2022 15:41

Yabu kids read loads of books (secondary teacher here)

DrSbaitso · 03/03/2022 15:41

They encourage interest in stories and imagination, which is a step to books.

We don't need any rules to make things harder.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/03/2022 15:43

They are all stories.
Plus there is usually a film of a book!

Where would you draw the line? Is 101 Dalmatians a book or a film, since the film is more known now?
Harry Potter? Book or film?
Thomas rhe Tank Engine?

sayanythingelse · 03/03/2022 15:45

Kids read plenty of books but it would make parents lives a lot harder if they could ONLY come as a character from a book. 4 year old DD loves books but she doesn't have a Very Hungry Caterpillar, Tiger Who Came To Tea or Goldilocks costume so she went as Owlette from PJ Masks.

Plus Disney princesses are in books, Marvel is a comic, etc.

HerbErtlinger · 03/03/2022 15:45

My DS wanted to wear his spider man costume, I said no as it's not a book. He dutifully trotted off to his bookcase and returned with a spiderman book we have that we sometimes read at bedtime. I did end up steering him away from it in the end because I didn't want people being judgy like the OP but wish I'd not worried about what others thought, let him wear the costume we already had of a character in a book we read instead of spending money to avoid other people's judgements.

Mooloolabababy · 03/03/2022 15:46

World book day can work out pretty expensive, so in a time when so many families are struggling financially, I think anything goes!

HelenaJustina · 03/03/2022 15:47

We did ‘bedtime story’ themed WBD in our school. It doesn’t involve expensive/stressful costumes, the kids loved it, and we didn’t have footballers/superheroes/movie characters. Instead they had the option of bringing in a favourite bedtime story/book to share. It’s been fantastic!

BogRollBOGOF · 03/03/2022 15:49

Autistic, dyslexic DS has gone in wearing his usual Minecraft clothes. He's also taken a Minecraft manual and a fanfic novel.

He hates fancy dress. I'm not wasting any money on WBD. He finds reading difficult and favours non-fiction over fiction. Minecraft is something that he finds very accessible and is something that he'll actually read for pleasure.

There's no point in being snobby about literature and as much as I'd have loved to have bookworm children, the reality is some children find reading a difficult chore. If you can get them reading something as a result of gaming, Marvel, Disney Princesses etc, that's a win.

UniversalTruth · 03/03/2022 15:50

YABU to conflate dressing up as a character from a comic book with 'nobody reads anymore'

Getting kids excited on world book day can only be a good thing, I encourage costumes from book characters but if my DC were too upset or I couldn't afford a new costume then there's no problem with a marvel character.

ComDummings · 03/03/2022 15:52

Comics are books. Sometimes it’s the only costume the child has.

Volhhg · 03/03/2022 15:52

YANBU in thinking it's a load of rubbish. My kids haven't seen any of the Disney films that they went to school dressed as today however they do read lots of books and the seven year old in particular is an avid reader and lover of books. They should just call it Disney day! Or favourite TV character day.

BigupPemberleyMassive · 03/03/2022 15:54

This
DaffodilDandilion · 03/03/2022 15:56

Neither. My kids went in as marvel and Disney characters today.

We read books every single evening (some of them even feature marvel and Disney characters 😉)

My children went in in the costumes they did because we already had them and I didn’t want to spend more money.

Danikm151 · 03/03/2022 16:00

marvel stories originated from comic books and in the case of Pixar and Disney there is usually a book of the film.
There is pressure on parents to get a costume. When I was younger (when book day started) it was a very simple costume- or makeup. Now it's extreme

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 03/03/2022 16:00

I’d rather see a child who is happy and comfortable in a costume they’ve chosen that happens to be Spider-Man or Elsa than a miserable child who’s dressed up as something they don’t want to be or not dressed up at all. Besides, there’s books of all the Disney and Pixar movies. They’re often not as enjoyable (for an adult) to read as say, Roald Dahl or the Gruffalo but meh.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 03/03/2022 16:05

Mine went as fireman Sam and a chef because they were the outfits we have and I don’t want to buy/make any others.

Both my kids watch tv and read plenty of books!

BlackCoffeeInAPoolOfSunshine · 03/03/2022 16:07

What a silly pair of choices!

Many children read - Marvel is a comic book universe before it's a film universe, and my Marvel fan son who loves an excuse to wear a costume reads prolifically whilst the son who hates dressing up and isn't especially interested in Marvel is incredibly sporty and if not playing sports loves PC civilisation building games and x-box driving games (teen) and only reads books he has to read for school.

I do find "world" book day bizzare from the outside looking in though - very few countries recognise it, which makes the "World" part odd, and I'm always glad my children never attended English schools (English because that's the school system I'm most aware of - I know it might be different in other UK education systems before Scottish and Welsh and northern Irish people tell me off) with the constant themed days and requirements for random themed clothing and props and things from parents.

The claims that school uniform is an equaliser are made a bit redundant by the sprinkling of "buy your child a supermarket costume" or "provide a Christmas jumper that will only be worn for one day" days surely...

Tdcp · 03/03/2022 16:08

DD went as spider-man today, she's an avid reader but she reads animal fact books mostly. She still wanted to get involved and she loves Spider-Man, Spider-Man was a comic book before a movie so I don't really see the issue.

I do however have an issue with her class colouring in a bookmark for world book Day and having a normal learning day with no reading, other than that though Hmm

DrSbaitso · 03/03/2022 16:12

A recent thread full of people being judgemental over the number of books on display in houses showed me that reading doesn't always broaden the mind.

Rosesareyellow · 03/03/2022 16:13

Meh 🤷‍♀️ Most kids happen to have a marvel costume or similar at home so I understand it’s convenient.
Schools can’t win though. Some parents love making a big thing of it some hate it and find it very inconvenient. Our school said no costumes this year on the school dojo page - some parents commented to say that’s great and what a relief and another accused the school of harming the children’s mental health by taking away all their fun Hmm
