To confront bus pusher in?

EzzieB · 02/03/2022 17:32

There's not much of a queue at my city centre bus stop at night but once the bus pulls in, everyone forms a queue more or less. This one woman though seems to come out of nowhere and just brazenly walks past people queueing and puts herself right at the front. I want to say something to her. We all get a seat but it's the principle and lack of manners. Am I just being petty?

OP posts:
SpecialSexBlanket · 02/03/2022 17:40

I used to confront the CF who used to do this when I was commuting on trains. I don't care if people think it's petty. If I've been patiently waiting, basic manners dictate you wait your turn too.

Unfortunately that's society for you though. People are selfish.

Moody123 · 02/03/2022 17:45

I feel people who do this wouldn't care if you confront them. They clearly see the queue and just choose to go first

VillanellesOrangeCoat · 02/03/2022 17:46

OMG queue jumpers give me the absolute rage!! No one queues properly anymore!

TheBestofTimesTheWorstofTimes · 02/03/2022 17:48

YANBU - but I doubt anyone will back you up! They will probably just tut at her

ElsieLappin · 02/03/2022 17:48

I'd still have to say something, petty or not it's rude behaviour

Chely · 02/03/2022 17:49

Wrong, just wrong. Get her told!!

Topseyt · 02/03/2022 17:49

I'd be tempted to say something. It isn't how we normally work here in the UK.

I wonder if she is from a country or culture where queuing isn't the thing that it is here, so possibly doesn't realise it is wrong to just go straight to the front and for whatever reason hasn't worked it out?

I've certainly been to some countries where queuing isn't necessarily expected and it is a bit of an adjustment to make. 🤣

WinterDeWinter · 02/03/2022 17:52

Please come back and update when you confront her OP!

ClariceQuiff · 02/03/2022 17:53

I'm just trying to understand what happens - you say the queue doesn't form until the bus pulls in, and then the woman puts herself at the head of the only-just-formed queue?

I'm not sure how queue order is determined if that happens - it isn't as though it's first-come/first served as in normal queuing practice.

So I think YABU - if you want a first come/first served queue you have to form one as people come along, otherwise it will be a free-for-all.

lateral · 02/03/2022 17:54

I would never confront a random person in public. I am too fearful of their reaction.

ICouldBeAnyone · 02/03/2022 17:56

People know who arrived after them and who was already there when they arrived.

jytdtysrht · 02/03/2022 17:56

If you are going to do it, I’d make sure that you are polite “did you release that people are queueing/were here before you?”
And I’d make sure she doesn’t look too fierce to avoid the risk of a violent reaction.

NotImpossible · 02/03/2022 17:57

Is there any chance that this person was actually there early but just chose to wait a little further away? I used to sit and wait when I arrived early for a bus (I was usually there before anyone else due to awkward timings); the queuers seemed to prefer to stand (only a few feet away - it was clear which bus we were all there for) so they always got on first. I usually just got on last as there was plently of room but I can imagine soneone else in my position claiming 'their' place when the bus arrived!

(And I often felt a bit disgruntled about it GrinGrinGrin)

ClariceQuiff · 02/03/2022 17:58

Do they? I wouldn't pay that much attention to random strangers at a bus stop - making a mental note of who arrived when. That's why we have queuing in the sense of people standing in the order in which they arrived. If everyone could simply remember the order in which others arrived, we wouldn't need the concept of standing in a line at all.

ilovesooty · 02/03/2022 18:01

I'm just waiting for the "I'd smack her and tell her to fuck off" posters. Grin

If everyone gets a seat I don't think I could be bothered to confront her and create a potentially risky situation.

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/03/2022 18:01

Nothing wrong with saying - excuse but there is a queue you know.

Everyone else will inwardly cheer you on.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 02/03/2022 18:04

Just shout age before beauty and let her on!?

Apparently it's a thing. I learned this a few months ago from a thread about bus pushing in. There is an unspoken language and understanding apparently. It made me aware of the fact that the reason I always board the bus last is because I'm autistic and don't understand the silent language bus people don't speak
Mojoj · 02/03/2022 18:07

I take it you're not from Glasgow? The thought of someone pushing in to a bus queue, unchallenged, in Glasgow made me laugh out loud. Get her told!!

ClariceQuiff · 02/03/2022 18:07

@MajorCarolDanvers

But the OP has said there isn't a queue.

They only form a queue at the point the bus arrives, and this woman puts herself at the head of it. That isn't the same as pushing in front of an already-formed queue.

If the OP and her fellow passengers want proper queue etiquette to be observed by others, they need to observe it themselves by forming a proper queue.

If they can't be arsed to do that, fine, but they shouldn't expect other people to understand whatever unwritten rule they are applying to determine who boards the bus first.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 02/03/2022 18:15

@ClariceQuiff even if there isn't a queue formed as people arrive at the bus stop, people generally recognise who around them was there before them, after them etc and get into a general who was there first type queue. It's just a well known etiquette thing.

ClariceQuiff · 02/03/2022 18:17

@TyrannosaurusRegina And I am saying not everyone can mentally retain the images of strangers like that - which is surely why the convention of standing in a line exists.

Cherrysoup · 02/03/2022 18:19

Dunno, it would also give me the rage, but my dh has made me think before I act-he says you don’t know the person, they might be crazy aggressive and could attack and god knows what they’re carrying. So whilst I’d definitely want to call them out, I’d be wary and probably would keep schtum.

TheOccupier · 02/03/2022 18:19

Do people outside London still queue at bus stops then? How quaint!

maddening · 02/03/2022 18:20

Unless she was around the bus stop waiting for longer than everyone definitely say something.
