OK my cat has been bringing in these rodents the last few days. Some are dead when I find them, some I rescue and put outside but one has escaped both me and cat. It is currently living in the cavity behind all my kitchen cupboards and popping up randomly in different drawers. I've emptied my kitchen and am now unsure what to do. Suggestions welcome!

Basically I would feel a lot happier if I'm dealing with a mouse or vole rather that (as I suspect) a baby rat. The picture is of one of the dead ones.

Looks like a small rat to me!

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 01/03/2022 16:13

Sorry, no help but the thought of it popping up in different drawers... 😂

TSJ19 · 01/03/2022 16:13

Looks like a baby Rat.

Elnetthairnet · 01/03/2022 16:14

I think it’s a baby rat…

Weevle84 · 01/03/2022 16:14

I think baby rat too

Peccary · 01/03/2022 16:14

Is the tail scaly or furry? I'd say largish mouse

Elnetthairnet · 01/03/2022 16:14

You’ve a good cat there!

Hullabaloo9 · 01/03/2022 16:15

Yes I did think baby rat. Now what do I do? I can hear it squeaking. Its awful

Hard to tell from that angle. Are the feet and head large in comparison to the body? Is its tail long in comparison to its body? If so then its probably a baby rat. Has the tail got hair on it? If so then it's probably a mouse.

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 01/03/2022 16:16

Mouse. The tail has fur rather than being naked, and rats are 30-40cm long.

Your cat is a decent mouser!

Branleuse · 01/03/2022 16:17

Its a little rat. Your cat is a good ratter

Hospedia · 01/03/2022 16:17

Sorry that should say is the tail short in comparison to the body

Cookerhood · 01/03/2022 16:18

I think it's a mouse. Is the tail hairy (mouse) or scaly (rat)? Do the feet look oversized (baby rat growing into its feet)?

Lovemusic33 · 01/03/2022 16:18

My cat dropped one in my kitchen, it started eating it’s way through the boxes of cereal 😬, in the end I put some poison down (in a gap down between my washing machine and a cupboard), after a day or 2 there was no sign of the mouse being alive.

CarrieMoonbeams · 01/03/2022 16:20

I also think it's a mouse, because of its hairy tail. It has quite large ears too, rats have got smaller ones.

Hullabaloo9 · 01/03/2022 16:21

It's tail is quite thick. Thicker than any of the mice I've been gifted. It's face seems shaped more ratty to me and it was heavy. Its also very very loud when it squeals when the cat chases it at 4am

Cookerhood · 01/03/2022 16:21

I think the pale tummy indicates mouse too

Fairislefandango · 01/03/2022 16:21

Mouse.

Walkingalot · 01/03/2022 16:23

I'd say baby Rat. Get some humane traps and put something tasty (peanut butter is good) in them where he's hiding . The ones I got are big enough for an adult rat as long as the tail doesn't get caught - but it wouldn't kill it, just uncomfortable I guess.

titchy · 01/03/2022 16:23

Hairless tail that tapers is a rat. Hairy tail the same thickness all along is mouse.

noblegreenk · 01/03/2022 16:23

It's a juvenile rat. I had pet rats years ago so know what they look like. Plus my hound is an excellent ratter and is always catching young rat snacks to eat in the garden.

Leonberger · 01/03/2022 16:24

My guess would be a young rat. It’s quite thick for a mouse. I think mice usually have bigger ears and pointier faces. It’s also got big feet for a mouse!

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 01/03/2022 16:24

Photo of the ratcatcher or it didn't happen. Wink

Go on, he/she deserves her "mouser" moment of glory.

SamphiretheStickerist · 01/03/2022 16:24

Baby rat. I've bred a few.
