OK my cat has been bringing in these rodents the last few days. Some are dead when I find them, some I rescue and put outside but one has escaped both me and cat. It is currently living in the cavity behind all my kitchen cupboards and popping up randomly in different drawers. I've emptied my kitchen and am now unsure what to do. Suggestions welcome!

Basically I would feel a lot happier if I'm dealing with a mouse or vole rather that (as I suspect) a baby rat. The picture is of one of the dead ones.

Baby rats are bigger than that. The snout is too pointy for a rat. It’s a mouse. I’ve killed enough of them in horrible London rentals over the years to know one!

I also hate to say it, but if you’ve got one you’ve got at least half a dozen. There’s always a whole family.

RewildingAmbridge · 01/03/2022 16:26

Ahhh it's quite sweet

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 01/03/2022 16:27

A close up of the tail will say for sure.

Cotswoldmama · 01/03/2022 16:28

Baby rat! We had a problem a couple of years ago. We've got a cat who's pretty good at catching them but the way we finally got rid for good was filling all the random holes on our old house!

Zwellers · 01/03/2022 16:31

I think mouse looking at ears and tail. Ethier way why would you want to reward your cat for bring diseased ridden vermin into the house for you to deal with.

SpiderVersed · 01/03/2022 16:31

I vote young rat too.

Libertybear80 · 01/03/2022 16:32

It's a rat

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 01/03/2022 16:33

Going for mouse here.

Kjr33 · 01/03/2022 16:33

Mouse, big ears and no snub shaped nose.

Hullabaloo9 · 01/03/2022 16:34

This is the culprit Smile

Had a mouse in the car, caught it this morning, in humane trap. That is larger than the mouse we caught. Fur also looks sort of rougher, so think baby rat. We got humane trap from amazon and used peanut butter.

Queenoftheashes · 01/03/2022 16:34

Is the tail shorter than the head and body?

BuddhaForMary · 01/03/2022 16:35

It's a mouse. Rats have a different kind of tail, even baby ones.

ClawedButler · 01/03/2022 16:35

Oh, I can identify that rodent. That's Jim. Nice fella, but sh*ts in ladies' handbags sometimes.

Staffy1 · 01/03/2022 16:36

@Hullabaloo9

Yes I did think baby rat. Now what do I do? I can hear it squeaking. Its awful
Poor little thing. Is it still alive now?
Hullabaloo9 · 01/03/2022 16:36

Aw. What a sweetie killing machine you have.
😻😻

Hullabaloo9 · 01/03/2022 16:37

It is still alive. I've got someone bringing me humane traps round. Would Nutella do as bait?

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 01/03/2022 16:38

Make sure Puss is out of the room...mine would be daft enough to eat the bloody Nutella🤦‍♀️

Hullabaloo9 · 01/03/2022 16:39

I don't have a dishwasher. Should I milton all my pots and pans in the bath or will a regular sink wash do?

PlinkPlankPlunk · 01/03/2022 16:39

Goodness your feline owner is lovely (and looks very smug about the recent catches!)

Nutella works well for bait, as does peanut butter, as they both have strong smells

Shellingbynight · 01/03/2022 16:40

My first thought was baby rat, but it could be a mouse. My cats bring both in. It looks a bit big for a mouse, but the feet look too small for a rat - it's hard to tell from the angle of the photo.

(Voles have cute chubbier faces and short tales.)

So to get it out, find out exactly where it is and then aim to lure it into a cardboard box, if necessary encouraging it from behind with a wooden spoon. That's my method with smaller rodents and it works well. I've done the same with rats but it's more difficult, they tend to jump.

whataboutbob · 01/03/2022 16:40

She looks just like ours ( who regaled us with a completed kill in the kitchen last night while we were eating supper). The critter looks like a mouse to me. You could try emailing the pic to your local rentokill for an identification. Don’t tell them you have a cat, let them think you might be a customer.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/03/2022 16:42

That's my Roland. We wondered where he had gone. I might as well take the signs off the lampposts now Sad

poodlepoop · 01/03/2022 16:42

Rat 🐀- get some snap traps
