I’m reading it everywhere, starting to feel terrified.

It’s not like covid or even WW1 or WW2, how can I protect my 3 year old? I can’t.

Even the BBC are talking about it as a possibility!

I just want to see my child grow up Sad I feel so sad & scared.

@TorringtonDean

Putin is a psychopathic murderer. Of course nobody with a bit of sense would ever threaten a nuclear attach but is he in his right mind?

Am I the only one who is feeling mightily pissed off with him? How dare he, one man, put all our futures in danger?

If it happens then that’s it, game over for all of us. That feels worse than just indivually dying, doesn’t it? The end of thousands of years of human civilisation and of course the loss of all of us including our nearest and dearest.

How DARE he, as Greta might say. Time this bastard was made to step down.

Oh no, everyone else thinks he’s just grand 😂😂😂

Of course you’re not the only one ‘pissed off’ with him. Why don’t you go and ask some Ukrainians that have had family members shot in the head over the last couple of days what their level of pissed offness is? It’s already ‘game over’ for hundreds of them without us all getting hysterical about nuclear bombs from the comfort of our sofas.

so long, and thanks for all the fish.

especially tesco sea bass with lemon butter.

@Whatafustercluck
Thanks for your post

TorringtonDean · 01/03/2022 15:26

Yes, obviously what’s happening in Ukraine is beyond appalling, that goes without saying. Nuclear weapons being thrown into the mix by this bully are the reason he’s getting away with it.

Maybe if the whole world realised how utterly ridiculous he is, with his tiny penis, stupid bareback photo shoots and his giant tables, maybe, just maybe, his bubble might burst and someone on the inside at the Kremlin might have the guts to get rid of him.

@VelvetChairGirl

I wonder why the media is scaremongering so much, they didnt do this over the annexing of chimea or chechnya.

still looking for the fix of doom and gloom now they haven't got the pandemic to focus on?

Its the new culture. They want to fill the fear gap left by covid. I noticed the coverage of the storms was particularly dramatic this year too. All transport was cancelled in my area for a 'threat to life' that turned out to be a rather blustery day. (I know the storms were bad in some areas.)
daisyjgrey · 01/03/2022 15:30

No. Put your phone down and turn the tv off for a while.

Maebybaeby · 01/03/2022 15:31

Putin’s circle/generals wouldn’t do it. Somebody would put a bullet in his head if it got to that point. Fortunately it’s not as simple as him pushing one big red button.

Many are loyal to Putin out of fear for their personal safety and that of their families, or just because they enjoy a life of relative privilege and power by being part of his circle. If it gets to a point where Putin is dead set on MAD then in a way his circle have no reason to fear him in the same way anymore. Somebody would stop him, I’m certain.

ManicPixie · 01/03/2022 15:32

“ Its the new culture. They want to fill the fear gap left by covid.”

Unless you think a nuclear power lead by an unhinged dictator isn’t actually invading another country then I don’t think you can blame this one on a fear-mongering media. That’s just the other side of the hysteria coin.

TorringtonDean · 01/03/2022 15:32

It’s not the media to blame. It’s the tyrant in charge of Russia!!

Storm Eunice was the worst we have had in this country for 30yrs. It was thanks to the Met Office warnings for people to stay home that the death toll was only five. Compared with the great storm of 1987 when 40 or so were killed by falling trees. Sometimes health and safety warnings do save lives - as long as they are reported, of course!

Echobelly · 01/03/2022 15:36

I don't think so - I think things were much more tense and for longer during the Cold War and it never happened.

LargeInCharge · 01/03/2022 15:37

No.

SometimesIwalksideways · 01/03/2022 15:41

No one can say never as we have those horrific weapons in the world. However ,even Boris was very sensible today when asked by a reporter in Poland if NATO would impose a "No Fly Zone" over Ukraine . She said children are dying and understandably, was very upset about that. However, Boris said No as that would put us directly into conflict with the Russian military - we would be shooting down Russian planes and the whole thing would escalate very quickly. Sad as it is, Nato cannot to do this as it would be catestrophic. So even me ,who dislikes Boris ,felt a bit reassured by the fact that there are folk thinking in this and trying to keep a cool head. It is horrible about what is happening though and we are limited . Please limit your time on social media and the news as it's awful. I have done this and freaked myself out . When my son was a baby, it was all the Kosovo stuff and I got myself into a total state and was quite unwell. There is a mental health thread on here and lots of nice non judgemental people . Take care ,OP.

Hospedia · 01/03/2022 15:43

Except all the people killed as a direct result or in the aftermath of said nuclear weapon 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Honestly!!!! What a stupid thing to say.

Hmm

What people? These were nuclear tests where the weapons were purposely detonated to, y'know, test them but we didn't all die from the detonation and fall out, did we? Nor did other people because they were tests.

Its not really a stupid thing to say. Some people see a nuclear bomb as a world ending event, @Hospedia is just pointing out it isn't.

Thank you, this is exactly what I meant.

5128gap · 01/03/2022 15:45

I didn't. I was making a slightly tangential comment about media coverage in response to the post I quoted.
WheelieBinPrincess · 01/03/2022 15:46

@Hospedia sorry, are you saying no one’s ever died as a result of a nuclear warfare?

Hiroshima?

LakieLady · 01/03/2022 15:47

@VelvetChairGirl

I don't think Crimea or Chechnya share a border with a NATO country.

The annexation of Ukraine is much more of a potential threat, because it borders Poland, Hungary, Estonia (I think ..) and probably some other NATO member states, so would make Russian incursions into NATO territory more likely and easier.

NATO states have a vested interest in Ukraine remaining a sovereign state, and not being subsumed into Russia. It could be seen as today's equivalent of the annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938. And we all know how that ended.

Hospedia · 01/03/2022 15:48

sorry, are you saying no one’s ever died as a result of a nuclear warfare?

I'm not sure if you're misunderstanding or deliberately trolling for an argument but where did I say that? I clarofied that the 2000+ detonations I referred to were tests, they took place after Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/03/2022 15:52

I wouldn’t be so sure no one’s ever died from those tests.

According to a 2017 study, they’ve contributed towards up to 460,000 excess deaths- mainly cancer.

It’s not like letting off a stick of dynamite in a mine.

Hospedia · 01/03/2022 15:52

Deliberately obtuse it is then.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/03/2022 15:53

What’s obtuse about researching some facts before making sweeping statements?

TorringtonDean · 01/03/2022 15:53

In the end it is like the Sudetenland but with the difference that Hitler did not have nukes (thank God). Putin does and that’s the problem.

Hospedia · 01/03/2022 15:56

What’s obtuse about researching some facts before making sweeping statements?

I made my point, I clarified my point, a PP clarified it too.

If you're unwilling or unable to understand the point, fair enough, but I'm not getting into a nitpick with you and I'm not engaging any further in your attempts to start a bunfight or to derail the OP's thread with pettiness.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/03/2022 16:00

I’m sorry I’ve obviously offended you but I don’t agree with your claims that nuclear ‘tests’ have not caused harm or even death to vast numbers of people.

Hardly a derailment since the very OP is a question about nuclear weaponry, and has invited discussion on…..nuclear weaponry.

Hospedia · 01/03/2022 16:00
