Justkeeppedaling · 28/02/2022 21:52

You don't have to buy a costume surely? Can't you make something from items/clothing you have at home?

Boy or girl? We might be able to help with ideals.

DappledThings · 28/02/2022 21:52

Doesn't have to cost that. I've spent about £3 on some sequins and a scrap of material. Hoping to make a dragon head out of a cardboard box tomorrow. Or rather DH is.

Fedupsotired · 28/02/2022 21:53

🙄 I'll bite. Choose a character that requires no cost

Picklypickles · 28/02/2022 21:57

Our school have specifically stated that they don't expect anyone to buy any new costumes and I wont be! The theme is favourite animals and my children already have dragon and cat themed costumes and even if they didn't it would be easy enough to make something, it's only meant to be a bit of fun!

IggyAce · 28/02/2022 21:59

It’s getting a little out of hand with some schools setting a theme or insisting that they dress as a word.
So grateful my dcs school has set the theme as bedtime stories and all dcs just have to wear pjs. Everyone has pjs and no one has to buy/make a costume. Saves me a load of faff and stress.

Legoisthebest · 28/02/2022 21:59

Don't buy one. It's not compulsory.
There... that wasn't hard was it.

Wizzbangfizz · 28/02/2022 21:59

It is annoying I don't disagree.

Legoisthebest · 28/02/2022 22:00

It's also not compulsory to dress up in any form of fancy dress either.
Just. Don't. Do. It.

MiniDaffodils · 28/02/2022 22:02

Don’t buy an expensive costume. Use what you have at home and make a free one. There are loads of examples online.
It’s these extra little activities that make school fun for the children and that’s really important. They have missed out on all these kind of things for the last 2 years.
Idea for free costume - Fantastic Mr Fox. Trousers. Top. Scarf. Fox mask drawn on a piece of card and coloured in.

DDivaStar · 28/02/2022 22:05

You can do it on a budget, but it is not everyone's strength and alot of hassle.

Our school aren't dressing up this year, they take their favorite book in and will have extra book/reading activities.

A few children and parents are dissapointed but overall I think most are pleased not to have the expense or hassle.

EatSleepReplete · 28/02/2022 22:09

DD's school have said they will not be doing costumes, it's to be uniform as normal, the children are encouraged to bring a copy of their favourite book though. There are refugee children in the school & quite a lot of families with both parents/single parent families out of work. It's a big chunk of money when you're on UC.

Strugglingtodomybest · 28/02/2022 22:10

I always left my boys to come up with their own costumes. I think DS1 dressing up as Katniss from the Hunger Games in year 6 was the best. Any excuse to take a bow and arrow to school!

Lime37 · 28/02/2022 22:11

We are useing a costume we already have but I would make one if I didn’t

Kite22 · 28/02/2022 22:25

YWould BeU to spend £19 on a costume.
However, that doesn't make dressing up on World Book Day wrong.
I managed to get 3 x dc through several years of Primary school without ever buying a costume.
Use your imagination.
Ask friends.

Look through some books you have for inspiration.
No-one has to spend £20 on a costume.

SoupDragon · 28/02/2022 22:33

So don't buy a £19 costume. Surely that's obvious?

How the heck do they dress as a word?

You don't need to spend £20 on a costume. Send them in their own clothes or uniform.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 01/03/2022 16:45

Ds is just going to wear his football kit. Can’t be arsed fucking about for World Book Day anymore.

camelfinger · 01/03/2022 16:52

I’ve overanalysed this for the past few years. This year I bought two costumes for £19 each, incidentally. I can afford it, but it does seem like a lot. From my point of view, it was a small price to pay to avoid the mental load of coming up with something, and realising we don’t have anything suitable at the last minute. I got large costumes so hopefully they can wear them again next year, and I hope to sell them in future. My DC seem to have no imagination and have complained about my poor efforts at homemade costumes in previous years. I would say that everyone else in their classes has shop-bought costumes, so don’t want them to feel left out. Surely most characters in most books just wear normal clothes anyway.

Sceptre86 · 01/03/2022 17:00

Our kids school is really rubbish at giving us notice for these kind of things. My dd already has dress up clothes so is going as Sleeping Beauty and my ds is going as Captain America (technically from a comic but oh well). We can afford to buy costumes but it's just another expense and I'm on mat leave so the money can be better spent elsewhere. My homemade effort would be completely lacking, I'm not blessed with creativity skills and all the kids in their classes will be wearing costumes, mostly shop bought. I wouldn't want them to feel left out.

Yanbu.

fudging · 01/03/2022 17:10

Don't be snobbish or resentful about people buying costumes. Some people have no imagination or little time. Their plate may already be full, metaphorically speaking.
I did once 'play cricket' by the rules and spent £4 on a cheap jumper, maybe £4 on long socks etc. Making a home-made costume isn't always free or easy.
Same with Victorian day. No I don't happen to have a flat cap or necktie at home, so yes, I had to spend money there too. But at least it wasn't a pre-made costume because that isn't cricket Hmm

jytdtysrht · 01/03/2022 17:12

You don't have to buy a costume

that is a good school.

that is how world book day should be celebrated.

bring a book you like, talk about why you like it.

no gifted parents required.
