It happens every year, you have 12 months to prepare for it, ebay, charity shops, local facebook groups, if you're going to say your child will only go as a specific character then put some money aside for it like you would for anything else or take it our of their birthday money, or manage their expectations better!

balalake · 01/03/2022 17:23

I agree with the sentiment of the OP, and am glad to read of schools where it is just bring a book in.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/03/2022 17:24

DS's school does pyjamas or costume.

mugoftea456 · 01/03/2022 17:25

I agree. Along with wear something yellow day/ wear something spotty day/dress up as a food day.

mugoftea456 · 01/03/2022 17:26

@Daffythedill

You don't need to spend £20 on a costume. Send them in their own clothes or uniform.
Please don't make you child be that kid! It's horribly unfair on them to be the only kid in uniform !
SartresSoul · 01/03/2022 17:27

Nobody is forcing anyone to buy an expensive costume. I always know when world book day is so can prepare a costume in advance and usually buy stuff on eBay. Not necessarily specific costumes but clothes that work and can be worn again so it isn’t wasteful.

WishIwasElsa · 01/03/2022 17:29

You don't have to buy new but I understand the pressure! Even at 5 and 7 mine had clear ideas about what they wanted to be. I am just not good at that making stuff and with work everything else I don't have much spare time so although I keep trying to save money it's tricky. I think it's a mainly affluent area and parents tend to make an effort so it's noticeable if you try to just make do. Other kids can be mean, my dd was asked why she has boys wellies they are my ds old ones I thought it wouldn't matter for just occasional school use rather than buying new ones which I have to leave at school

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 01/03/2022 17:32

There's loads of books featuring ordinary children, like the Famous Five, all the David Baddiel books, various David Williams etc.

So I don't get the complaints about this when kids can go in their own clothes and pick one of those characters.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 01/03/2022 17:36

By child 3 it was look in the dressing up box and find a book to match day.

CommonPrimrose · 01/03/2022 17:38

I agree with "let's talk about our favourite books day."

CommonPrimrose · 01/03/2022 17:39

Mine did usually go in dressed as normal tbh!

44PumpLane · 01/03/2022 18:31

You don't need to spend that much money.....local pass it on sites on Facebook's ok, ask around friends or local estate pages, fashion something from clothes they already own (like someone mentioned up thread they could go as famous five, Harry Potter etc)

Last year our kids school asked the kids to be dressed as an adjective.....loada of kids came as Spiderman or Elsa as it's what parents had......I sent mine as two adjectives and used stuff in the house to fashion accessories to make them into "fluttery" and "flowery".......I spent £3 iirc.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 01/03/2022 18:34

My daughter's school is doing pajama day and they need to bring in their favourite book. Much better.

elliejjtiny · 01/03/2022 18:44

I have 5 dc and this year I've spent a total of £3 between them on world book day costumes. They like to dress up so they often get a costume for Christmas or their birthday and stuff gets handed down as well. I don't like it when the school make things complicated with themes though.

Monpetitpoisson · 01/03/2022 19:08

I was relieved to find out my kids school isn’t doing it . They said it’s too expensive and the parents get competitive over outfits . They will be reading and making masks instead

Longcovid21 · 01/03/2022 19:12

I found a fancy dress shop that was closing down and so I got some costumes for £2 each. Feeling good this year!

Usernamqwerty · 01/03/2022 19:16

My 5 year old is going as Buzz Light-year - already had the costume but it was £1 from a charity shop. The younger one is going as Jessie from Toy Story (£2 in charity shop)

CheshireChat · 01/03/2022 19:23

I'm incredibly annoyed as I had a perfectly good costume from last year and now school have said we need to follow a specific theme. So I had to buy a costume as I didn't have anything that would work and DS won't wear his own clothes/ uniform.

Incidentally I also spent £19 and begrudge it.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/03/2022 19:26

DS often went as a Muggle. We never told him, otherwise we would have had to call in the MoM to oblivate...

Zwellers · 01/03/2022 19:26

Just don't partake. The more people who don't perhaps these schools will get the nessage. It's meant to be about books not pointless costumes.

HangOnToYourself · 01/03/2022 19:46

It is annoying as you dont want to let kids down. Even making a costume is a nightmare if you dont have much stuff at home.to use to make the costume and if you are crap at crafts (like me).
Ds wanted to go as the big bad mouse and I wouldnt have a clue how to make that

I did manage to tactfully suggest he go as harry and his bucket of dinosaurs which has saved me the time and money as we have a bucket and toy dinos already.

Soubriquet · 01/03/2022 19:49

The theme for us this year is “pick your favourite book and dress as a character from it”

I don’t have the money nor the ability to buy/make a costume.

Ds has his birthday on Friday so that money has gone towards his presents.

He had already come under pressure from the teacher who insists he had to dress up but he won’t be. He will take in a book and he will be in non-uniform but he won’t be wearing a costume. Neither will dd

CommonPrimrose · 01/03/2022 19:51

Harry and the bucket of dinosaurs is a good idea.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/03/2022 19:52

It’s getting a little out of hand with some schools setting a theme or insisting that they dress as a word.

My school is doing dress as a word. It’s really quite easy as you can just use what you have. Purple top and trousers - you are purple. Spotty dress - dotty.

I’m going in my PJs and I’m going to be ‘tired’.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/03/2022 19:53

He had already come under pressure from the teacher who insists he had to dress up but he won’t be.

Confused What teacher is insisting? I tell all of my class that dressing up is completely optional. If they come in in just non-uniform, I don’t even bat an eyelid. It’s meant to be a fun day but dressing up isn’t fun for everyone.
