AIBU to think nearly everyone has stopped wearing them?

At the weekend we visited a local tourist attráction, went swimming, went to the pub, went for a meal out, and went shopping. During this I saw no more than a handful of people wearing a mask?

I'm not bothered if people wear them although I do allow myself an eye roll at the people wearing them outside in the fresh. And I am pleased to see less and less people wearing them as it is a sign things are going back to normal and I for one don't want masks normalised.

Theunamedcat · 28/02/2022 18:41

I'm no longer wearing mine unless I'm asked to or I start coughing again (residual covid cough)

WinterGold · 28/02/2022 18:42

Worth reading this article from Science Daily in 2015.

I'm not sure what the "AIBU" is, so I don't know how to vote.

I live somewhere where masks haven't been mandatory in most places since about June 2020. Most people still wear them though. Did people in the UK really only wear masks because it was a legal obligation?

I don't think one small study in Australia over 6 years ago is exactly compelling evidence.

MyGPsurgeryisUseless · 28/02/2022 18:48

Was in Sainsburys today and quite literally the only one wearing a mask 🤷‍♀️

To be honest I forgot I didn’t need to wear one just habit get out of car put face mask on

countbackfromten · 28/02/2022 18:58

Oh yes I’m virtue signalling for wearing one. Not trying to stay well as I can go to work and care for my patients 🙄

Jellykat · 28/02/2022 19:01

Everyone still happily wearing them in my part of Wales, no problem at all.

Pootle40 · 28/02/2022 19:05

In Scotland and stopped wearing mine about 6 weeks ago. Roll on 21st March and hope others ditch them too!

BirdOnTheWire · 28/02/2022 19:07

@VladmirsPoutine

I'm never going to stop wearing them. I actually no longer even wear them because of covid. They just provide so many other benefits to me. Asia had it right when they conceived of mask-wearing!
Same hereGrin. I haven't had a cold in two years. I did get covid but I had been to a crowded restaurant. I don't care remotely what I look like. I often wonder if vanity is the main reason some objected to wearing them when they were compulsory.
NCforpoo · 28/02/2022 19:09

I don't understand why you wouldn't wear one? So 10%are clinically vulnerable. We know masks protect not the user but those near them. So every time you are not wearing a mask close to others you're saying a big "fuck you" to vulnerable.

I'll keep wearing mine indoors in public settings. Can't see the harm at all, can definitely see the value.

pigsDOfly · 28/02/2022 19:12

Went to the supermarket on Friday, almost everyone was wearing a mask.

Had to go to A&E. In a crowded waiting room all but about 3 people were wearing masks. On the way there and back both cab drivers were wearing masks.

Tbh, as far as I can see mask wear is pretty much unchanged in my area.

People have mostly worn them across all ages ranges, and it appears they continue to wear them.

Awalkintime · 28/02/2022 19:13

@Mariposista

I would only wear them now where I actually have to, in the doctors or on a plane. Don’t give a stuff about the virtue signaling lot who refuse to move on - I respect their choice to wear them but they have to respect mine.
If name calling is what you think shows respect I wonder what disrespect is?

I am vunreable. I'm not saying fuck you to anyone. Hardly anyone has a mask on where I live and of they do I'll keep my distance.
Juno22 · 28/02/2022 19:27

Very few people wearing masks in my part of London.

I had to drop something off at my GP practice yesterday and had to wear a mask (which I didn't mind) but none of the reception staff or the 2 nurses I saw walking past were wearing them.

I'm flying overseas this weekend and I've just had an email from the airline to say masks are no longer required on the plane, just recommended.

ChoiceMummy · 28/02/2022 19:46

@alltheapples

I am just surprised. If most other people had been wearing them, I would have worn one too.
Why does what others do impact you though? I still wear despite most people not having really worn since summer 2020 in reality as many didn't restart.
jcyclops · 28/02/2022 19:51

The number of people wearing masks in my area is the lowest in two years. I'd quite forgotten how ugly most people were around here Wink

Darbs76 · 28/02/2022 19:52

Yes in England hardly anyone is wearing them now. I did continue to wear one but I don’t know unless I feel uncomfortable if people too close. Been jabbed twice, boosted and had covid.

momls20 · 28/02/2022 20:01

I still have to wear one at work which is doing my absolute head in Hmm

jadey1991 · 28/02/2022 21:07

I'm from London Walthamstow and there are hardly anyone wearing one. There is of course a small percentage that is wearing one. However I've not worn one since 1st lockdown. I think they are pointless. Although I tested my self weekly. Everyone has there own opinion and there own decision in to wearing one.

ThistlesAndUnicorns · 28/02/2022 22:03

I know this has been mentioned a lot but I still don't understand why people say masks don't help yet surgeons/nurses etc have used them for years? If they don't help then surely it's a huge waste on the tax payer? Genuine question.

Exactly. And covid not being the only respiratory virus...masks "don't work" yet the absolute geniuses on here sem to forget that we in hospitals have been looking after people with all sorts of viruses for years isolatong them in side rooms and wearing masks to go in.
IHateWasps · 28/02/2022 22:10

I genuinely can't understand why people keep making ridiculous comparisons with surgeons. Unless you are Hannibal Lecter, your average supermarket trip is unlikely to bear any resemblance to the role of a surgeon whos spends many hours in an operating theatre hovering over a patient with open wounds/cavities and is exposed to brain matter, blood, bone fragments and other tissue.

Justgorgeous · 28/02/2022 22:11

Off permanently now unless we are told to wear them again. Still some people wearing them under their nose and chin.
