DH has filled the water butt with tap water

Obviously there are more important things.
But DH spent quite some time this afternoon filling the water butt with water from the garden tap. The butt had fallen over and emptied in the high winds, and I stood it back up this morning. He's obviously seen it empty, and his first thought is to fill it back up....... Please tell me I'm not crazy here in thinking the sole purpose of a water butt is to collect rain water for use on the garden when needed, for the explicit reason of avoiding using tap water.

Was he prepping? 🙈

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/02/2022 23:17

A phrase I heard years ago from my aunt and have used often since seems appropriate here.

My uncle did something stupid, cant remember what it was, and she said "I assume that you have a reason for doing X, but I dont want to know what it is because then I will think that you are an even bigger bloody idiot than I already do!"

Sounds awful but they actually had a devoted and loving relationship, which meant that they could call each other out on the dumb stuff without it causing a row.

@19Bears happy now you more acknowledged the abui than the fact I called your husband a tit 🤣. You are brill

OnTheBoardwalk · 27/02/2022 23:33

@TerryChoc you can change your vote

19Bears · 27/02/2022 23:35

@19Bears

Thanks all. Just wanted to confirm he's a f** idiot before I launch into "are you a f** idiot?!"

I could go into more detail, but this is a microcosm of the whole situation in which I'm trying to find the right moment to tell him it's time to call it a day...

If you're serious, you don't need to accumulate reasons and justifications.

You can end it if you want to.

Sweetlikejollof · 27/02/2022 23:45

@19Bears Are you finally going to end it? I’ve been following your threads and comments for some time and I’m very much rooting for you.

SisterRuth · 27/02/2022 23:55

Tell him the thing's full name is "rain water butt". It's not really but he might understand then.

19Bears · 27/02/2022 23:59

Oh bless you @Sweetlikejollof yes I am. It's just a matter of time. And with the way things are going right now, it's a kick up the bum that sometimes you run out of time way before you're expecting to....

@Fairylightsongs

Wow. If he’d left it it would have been filled in a few days. I’d be annoyed at this level of stupidity.
Have you never done something without really thinking it through?

OK actually I take back my sympathy for him trying to be helpful but not thinking it through. Bury him under the water butt

BarbaraofSeville · 28/02/2022 06:29

Madness, especially as it's going to rain again this week, (I hope you're not on a water meter?) but then we live in a country full of shops that are currently trying to sell people things like pancake mix, when the whole point of pancake day is to use up your existing supplies in preparation for lent.

Lillyhatesjaz · 28/02/2022 07:45

We use the water from our water butt to water house plants that shouldn't be watered with tap water so would never fill it from the tap

ThinWomansBrain · 28/02/2022 08:21

I do agree with some PPs that putting some water in to weigh it down a bit might be sensible - but filling it sounds potty.
Wouldn't large stones or a couple of bricks achieve the same result?
