DH has filled the water butt with tap water

Obviously there are more important things.
But DH spent quite some time this afternoon filling the water butt with water from the garden tap. The butt had fallen over and emptied in the high winds, and I stood it back up this morning. He's obviously seen it empty, and his first thought is to fill it back up....... Please tell me I'm not crazy here in thinking the sole purpose of a water butt is to collect rain water for use on the garden when needed, for the explicit reason of avoiding using tap water.

It’s a big empty barrel to collect rain water

@Wedonttalkaboutrats Don't get me started. Surprisingly, flushing the toilet repeatedly without waiting for the cistern to fill up results in eventual breakage....

Definitely the same man Grin

Holy crap - that's some serious foolishness! LTB, for sure.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/02/2022 22:39

You have eight water butts?????

Yes, what on earth is wrong with that?
She likes big butts and she does not lie.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/02/2022 22:41

That makes no sense at all - but there are other examples of that, I suppose. I never understand why it seems so impossible to buy a mug tree - on which to store your existing mugs - without it coming with extra mugs, thus putting you back at square one.

Tell him you've seen this great website where you can buy pre-filled black bin gabs - readyrubbish.com - to save you all the effort of having to fill the wheelie bin yourself Grin

nutellingyou · 27/02/2022 22:43

Bless him! 🤣

When I met my DH he used to BUY water from the petrol station shop to fill the water tank for the wipers!!!! He didn't realise the garage supplied a water and air machine thingy. He didn't learn that until he was 33 and I told him!
Silly man putting Evian in to clean his windscreen 🤣

@NewYearCalavicci

Ha ha what a silly sod , next time he needs to put a couple of breeze blocks in the butt to weigh it down .
but then it stores less water
LondonQueen · 27/02/2022 22:45

Is he usually this dense?

If you put rope round the breeze blocks you can pull them out once there’s enough rainwater to stabilise it from tipping in the wind

yup and I would have more if I could. gardening is one of my main hobbies and much of what i grow is in giant (30 to 50 litre) tubs. I have bought then over several years mostly when they were reduced in sales and I reckon I am in profit on what the water would have cost me from the tap. Its a really easy way to do my bit for the environment too.
Etinoxaurus · 27/02/2022 22:51

@19Bears

He also picks up the bottle of handwash rather than just leaving it where it is on the sink and pressing the pump down, leaving a dent in the side of the bottle. Ffs.
The water butt and cistern is maddening, but the only thing I’m getting from the handwash thing is that you’re really really irritated by him. In a happy relationship you’d not even notice. Flowers

I have got a duff back and iffy knees. Much easier to put some water in....also if they are on stands, as mine are, to pull the block out without tipping the butt over, you'd need to stand on a ladder. Its actually rare that I need to add water to a butt.....maybe at the end of a very long dry spell with no prospect of rain at a time of year when everything is growing fast.

This is hilarious 😂

So is the OP. OP, yanbu, your DH is silly, the whole point is that it's cheaper and better for the environment!

I don't have a water butt but I want one. Shopping online for one now...

"19Bears

Are they the plastic bottles it comes in? I find that when i press down on the pump, the bottle goes flying. I laid out on "proper" china ones with wide bases to stop this happening and of course I can now use refils.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 27/02/2022 22:56

Wouldn't the breeze blocks be below the tap level anyway? Therefore irrelevant that they are displacing a potential litre or two of rainwater?

godmum56 · 27/02/2022 22:57

@Mummy1608
I stalk them on Amazon and then pounce when they are reduced.

Good tip thanks! Although I'm pretty sure I've only got enough roof to catch rain for one water butt, 8 is impressive lol!

per breeze block you actually lose around 9litres of water. a breezeblock is 440mm by 215mm by 100 mm ish. multiply the dimensions together to get the volume of 9460cc

its amazing how much rain you can collect even off a shed roof. you can connect the butts together too so that one downpipe will fill more than one butt.

19Bears · 27/02/2022 23:06

I'll let you off @TerryChoc !! I was wondering why it had gone up to a massive 4% 😅
