Woman at work burst out laughing at me

ConfusedNUpset · 27/02/2022 19:48

I do bank shifts for the NHS, therefore I’m not in one place, I move around so don’t really get to know anyone properly as such.
Yesterday I was on shift when the senior came into the clinic to borrow something. She asked how the day was going and I said “not too bad thank you”. That was all I said. Well she started sniggering looked like she was trying to hold it back and then burst out howling with laughter. I didn’t know what to do so I kind of laughed along and just said “what is it?” But she couldn’t talk, she had tears rolling down her face and was literally bent over screaming with laughter. I asked again what was funny and she just waved her hands at me as she couldn’t speak. Anyway I decided to just carry on with my work and she eventually scurried out of the room but I could still hear her laughing in the corridor.

So I was paranoid anyway. This morning another staff member came in for something and asked what I’d done to senior as she was hyperventilating when she got back to the office. I told her she’d just burst out laughing for no reason and she said that was unusual as she’s a miserable sod normally.

Now I’m ultra paranoid. I’m due back there tomorrow but I’m so self conscious now and feel like I can’t say anything as she’s senior (as in two bands higher than me).

Any suggestions as what she might have been laughing at?? Could it be that she remembered something funny and I just happened to be there? DH keeps telling me to forget about it but it’s really playing on my mind.

Name changed as ultra outing!

She was incredibly rude to not even let you know why she was laughing.

Do you sit near a window? Maybe something outside made her laugh?

Grumpyoldblonde · 27/02/2022 19:54

It's not you. My best guess is that something for some reason tickled her funny bone. Very inappropriate but it could have been anything, a crumb on your lip for example. Not really funny but just hit her silly spot.

Try not to dwell on it this is about you.

Grumpyoldblonde · 27/02/2022 19:55

Agh, isn't about

Loopytiles · 27/02/2022 19:56

Inappropriate behaviour, and probably nothing to do with you.

Lolliepoppie · 27/02/2022 19:57

She sounds absolutely bonkers, definitely her and not you!

AmyDudley · 27/02/2022 19:57

She sounds very silly and unprofessional. I would a) hope she wet herself and b) put it right out of my mind.

Bytrgrewd · 27/02/2022 19:57

How odd! Any chance you could ask next time?

DinkyDaisy · 27/02/2022 19:57

Some people are just rude.
I think I might ask her? Do you think you could?
Or, probably wiser to ignore...unless happens again...

MichelleScarn · 27/02/2022 19:58

It's possibly (speaking from my experience!) a weird response because of your polite answer? Said a similar thing once, re how shift was 'not too bad actually' and they parrotted "oooo not too bad acktuaaalllly, get you!!"

I keep thinking was it the way I replied? But it’s not that funny surely?

Out of curiosity how would others respond to that question? I’m not neurotypical so paranoid I’ve said something weird now 😞

She sounds bonkers. I'd assume she's having some sort of mental breakdown.

WorraLiberty · 27/02/2022 20:02

Howling with laughter

Tears rolling down her face

literally bent over screaming

Hyperventilating

Are you absolutely sure OP, or are you prone to exaggeration?

Bytrgrewd · 27/02/2022 20:02

I’d probably say the same as you

Actupfishy · 27/02/2022 20:03

That is very rude and would have made me feel really uncomfortable!

I’m not exaggerating, she was literally bent over howling with tears rolling down her face

She sounds incompetent. You’ve kept your cool and she’s running around like a blue arsed fly as she’s unorganised. Well, that’s what I’m reading from it.

WorraLiberty · 27/02/2022 20:05

I’m not exaggerating, she was literally bent over howling with tears rolling down her face

Then I would assume she's either part wolf, or having a nervous breakdown.

Creeeper · 27/02/2022 20:05

She very likely just thought of something else that made her laugh earlier and that was it

Some of these responses are ridiculous. Having a mental breakdown, really?

ApocalypseNowt · 27/02/2022 20:05

Sounds v weird unless you were doing something at the time that was incongruous with your statement I.e. if you were covered in blood or sick or something

Bytrgrewd · 27/02/2022 20:06

Only thing I can think of is that “not too bad” is a very British thing to say. An American or European might find it funny? Still rude of her though!

billy1966 · 27/02/2022 20:06

Nothing unusual about your response.

She sounds batshit.

7eleven · 27/02/2022 20:08

Your reply was a completely reasonable one, OP.

3luckystars · 27/02/2022 20:08

Sounds like she was acting completely out of character, it also it obviously was nothing to do with you because she didn’t tell anyone else why she was laughing either.
Don’t let it get to you.

Ginspiration · 27/02/2022 20:09

Did she definitely ask how the day was going? Only thing i can think of is you might have misheard her and that "not too bad thank you" was an unintentionally hilarious response...

AngelinaFibres · 27/02/2022 20:10

She sounds like a total cow. Is your accent very different from everyone around you. Could she be finding that hilarious ( being a knob).
