To find Baby on board car signs pointless and rather irritating.

I just don't get it. What purpose do these signs serve? I totally understand why you might wear a baby on board badge on the tube, that has a purpose. But why a car sign? Are other drivers supposed to be behave differently around you "more safely" or perhaps just be forewarned that you may have poor driving or parking as you may be sleep deprived. Aibu to find this pointless signalling irritating? Maybe someone with one of these signs share why?

Get one or or don't get one. Honestly why do you care 🤷🏽‍♀️

Well that could go for anything in AIBU couldn't it? If nobody cared about about stuff this topic would be tumbleweed.

@EvilPea

When we see them in cars at least one person says something like “Ah. I was going to ram your car. Now I’ve seen the sign, I won’t”
We were driving home yesterday and were passed by a car with a huge just married sticker in the back. It was the M5 so they had obviously taken the string of tins off the back. My husband laughed and said " So basically telling everyone, 'look we are shagging lots'." Its all sort of silly. I didn't have one but I can see that when you have had a baby/got married you are so thrilled with it all you just want to shout it from the roof tops. It wears off after a bit. The ones that say " little princess on board" generally indicate the exact opposite is true.
Purplepenny69 · 28/02/2022 08:25

I always thought they were for PFBs, they now seem to have been somewhat replaced by the little stick figure families, that include the dog and the cat 🤦‍♀️

Recycledblonde · 28/02/2022 08:25
@allthatfancypaintsasfair but that is exactly what they are for, to allow emergency services to know that there maybe someone in the car who can't leave the car unaided. Same as you get one for autistic / neuro diverse people to let them know that there maybe an individual in the vehicle that might act unexpectedly - you can get them as a bumper sticker or as a sleeve that goes over the seat belt.

In the dark, if a car had flipped etc it would be easy to miss if there was a bad accident and the people in the car unconscious.
No no no, in my 12 years as a paramedic we have NEVER looked for a baby on board sign at an RTC. If we happen to see one we do not take any notice of it.
I don't particularly care if you have one but don't get one thinking it will mean we will look for a baby. We look anyway.

EthelTheAardvark · 28/02/2022 10:30

I'd have thought that, if anything, these signs would tend to make everyone less safe because they obstruct the driver's view.

MorningStarling · 28/02/2022 11:01

They explain it in the Simpsons, in a flashback episode when Marge is pregnant she shows Homer the "baby on board" logo and explains that "now people will stop intentionally ramming our car."

That's all the sign is for, to discourage others from deliberately driving into you.

Someone linked to the clip on the thread, yesterday.

Ah, the Simpsons - that well know factual documentary 😂

Sparklingbrook · 28/02/2022 11:38

Yes didn’t the Simpsons predict Covid too or something? 🤣

Sfumato · 28/02/2022 11:39

It ex

Sfumato · 28/02/2022 11:40

It explains a lot about the world if people use The Simpsons as their source of factual information on things.

squiddybear · 28/02/2022 11:41

We were given one when we left hospital and told to put it in

Amichelle84 · 28/02/2022 11:48

We have one, I just assumed it was the done thing to try a discourage idiot drivers or to try and stop people parking too close.

So weird what annoys people - does it really matter? Not doing any harm at all. People are so weird on this site.

Huevosrotos · 28/02/2022 11:49

I think the point is to hope tailgaters will think twice when they might ram into a little baby.

ButtercupOfFlorin · 28/02/2022 11:54

Has anyone heard the urban myth about the firefighter who came to an accident and saw there was a BOB sticker, so searched for a child - he (because of course it’s a man) looked and looked, slowly panicking, and he took so long that the car BLEW UP and he died. Because cars just randomly blow up. And trainef first responders need a shitty yellow triangle instead of, you know, using their eyes to identify a child in a car. so take them off when your kids aren’t in the car Grin

ButtercupOfFlorin · 28/02/2022 11:55

How deluded do people have to be to think tailgaters are happy to risk the life of adults but they make sure they don’t try to kill the babies of those adults?

Irridescantshimmmer · 28/02/2022 11:59

The baby on board signs are to remind other drivers not to drive like a bunch of nutters or they could kill or cause serious harm to a baby.

I know I would not like a heavy weight like that on my consciounce.

ButtercupOfFlorin · 28/02/2022 12:02

It surely killing adults would weigh on your conscience?

If you tailgate you’re a dick - wether you’re tailgating a single man or a family with 4 kids. Children’s lives aren’t more precious or worthy than adults’.

Sirzy · 28/02/2022 12:02

Do you really think the people who drive like a bunch of nutters see a small sign like that and think “oh I must change my driving” Hmm

ButtercupOfFlorin · 28/02/2022 12:03

@Sirzy if I’ve learnt anything from parenting it’s that some people don’t realise that others don’t care about their children the same way they do. So yea I think people really believe that!

TicTacHoh · 28/02/2022 12:03

So pointless.

Little Prince/Princess on Board ones are even worse.

You'd be fine with killing an adult though?
wanttobeehappy · 28/02/2022 12:05

@HunterHearstHelmsley

I take them to mean "I'm a shit driver who isn't paying attention to the road". There is literally no point otherwise.
Same
Iwantmyoldnameback · 28/02/2022 12:13

I can't say they bother me either way but if they make one arsehole not drive too close they are a good thing.
The said arsehole my not even realise, I drive two different cars in the same way but one is a red rag to a bull to certain drivers and they will do anything not to be stuck behind a little run around.
