Where would you flee to if war came to us ?

Sorry really not wanting to sound alarmist. But just pondering on the thought of which country we could seek refuge in, should the worst happen?

Our European neighbours would be out, as they'll have their own issues.

So where could we go ? Interesting to think about with all that's going on and how the general public view refugees...

I’d just stay here , can’t imagine north Northumberland being high on a bombing target when it’s the least populated county

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 21:50

Aus nationality so an option

Not sure what I’d do though

thebabessavedme · 26/02/2022 21:50

I'm here to stay, I'm actually furious, we have had 2 fucking years of covid, then, just as the world was starting to brighten we get this fucking loony tune who wants to rule the bloody world, even though his own country dosent have a pot to piss in, with his threats and posturing.
Our politicians are a bunch of wet weekends who have shown they cant even arrange a piss up without causing chaos - I too (@bumblingbovine49) am a 60 year old menopausal woman and I will protect my family with my dying breath if it comes to it.

BulletTrain · 26/02/2022 21:51

I'm fairly rural so would probably just head down deeper into Somerset! We have no dual nationality or anything.

Truthlikeness · 26/02/2022 21:52

I would stay in my country- I have no ties to anywhere else. This is my home. I would probably move from where I currently live (the capital city) to where the bulk of family live - a smaller city.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/02/2022 21:52

I live on Exmoor so I'll stay put.

bruce43mydog · 26/02/2022 21:52

We can all rely on India in a crisis and the wheather is better than England.

Other than that I will build a underground tunnel in my garden and all my neighbours will all be invited down under. It will be a tight squeeze but very cosy. I will make everyone a cup of tea just to keep us warm. And keep us all sane. While we panic about our future 🙂

AdoraBell · 26/02/2022 21:53

Chile. We lived there previously.

ToMockAKillingBird · 26/02/2022 21:53

Out to Anglesey, a family member has a holiday home there.

I always thought those American bunker people were OTT, but if I could afford one I'd have it.

MissAngorian · 26/02/2022 21:55

Stay put - I'm in a rural location so I'd probably try and help house people, particularly my family who live in a more urban location. I have a 4 yr old and some of the images coming out of the Ukraine are fucking awful - when I think of that world for her, it just fills me with sadness.

Kendodd · 26/02/2022 21:56

Well firstly, I can't imagine anywhere would be welcoming us with open arms. The only country (I believe) UK passport holders have a right to resettle in is Ireland so I guess it would be there.

Twofurrycats · 26/02/2022 21:56

Nowhere. I'll be living in a rural area soon so would hunker down with a shotgun or two.

ABitOfAShitShow · 26/02/2022 21:56

I can’t know without being in that situation, of course, but I like you think I’d stay. I’d want to have a go and not run. I have no kids so I realise the decision would be easier for me.

Jedsnewstar · 26/02/2022 21:56

however that boat is very physically far away

The USA is much closer to Russia than the UK is though.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/02/2022 21:57

Nowhere to go.

No point trundling over to Dartmoor as a) it would be full of half of London as Devon and Cornwall was when Boris decided to wait until the private schools had gone off to their holiday homes before calling lockdown b) half of the moor is MOD infested at the best of times and c) Devonport. That'll be a strategic target.

Oh, and d) MIL will say she hasn't got enough milk in the fridge for us to stay with her and would quite possibly talk me to death within the first hour and a half about the price of bread and how awful it is to leave your toaster out and get crumbs over the countertop (whilst putting half a pint of milk in a cup where a basics teabag has been waved at it from the other side of the leat) if the pub was closed.

Frazzled2207 · 26/02/2022 21:57

We wouldn’t be able to get anything other than a short term visa or visa waiver for anywhere so surely it’s academic.

I’d head to my parents house in rural wales and hope for the best

Onionpatch · 26/02/2022 21:57

Its quite hard to flee because of the sea - i cant imagine being allowed on a flight to somewhere random as i have no links with anywhere. I might be able to pay for the children to get to a colleague abroad who was willing, or to more rural uk relatives but I think id just have to hope i didnt get killed and live under the regime of whoever won.

Rosidesa · 26/02/2022 21:58

I wouldn't flee, I would fight. It wouldn't be about me - it would be to protect the future generation to let them have the same freedoms we had - especially before COVID-19.

I don't think it will come to this anyway - the biggest threat to the UK would be cyber attacks and punishing people through gas and electricity supply.

womaninatightspot · 26/02/2022 21:59

I think I'd stay put. Rural Scotland, private water supply, wood for burning, decent supplies and grow own veg/ keep chickens/ bees already. It'd be a miserable existance without a weekly Aldi/ tesco shop but I reckon we could survive for a decent bit if infrastructure around us collapses. There's a bridge on our drive over a fairly fast river, the family joke is in times of crisis we'd blow the bridge. If it all goes nuclear then we're fucked regardless.

hawhar · 26/02/2022 22:00

DH and DDs have dual US-UK citizenship so we'd go to the US. I'd feel safe from warfare there. Of course we'd depend on being able to fly out but Biden gave enough notice for US citizens to leave Ukraine, so hope it would be the same if there was a threat to the UK.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2022 22:02

We'd probably stay out.

We're rural and DH is really resourceful so I like to think we'd be as okay as we can be.

I have Australian citizenship but as their borders are pretty much shut I don't fancy my chances Grin

Kendodd · 26/02/2022 22:02

As an aside, has it crossed anyone else mind to actually travel the other way? I heard the Ukrainian president asking people to come and help defend the country and they will provide you with some arms. I did think for a minute, I should go help. I'm in my 50s though and don't have the children.

Oh, and as I understand it Ukrainians need a visa to come to the UK. This requirement hasn't been dropped.

OhLordyWhatNow · 26/02/2022 22:03

Don't want to burst the bubble of people choosing US, Canada, or Scandinavian countries, but..

Finland has a land border with Russia and is not a NATO country, neither is its next door neighbour Sweden.

Canada is only about 800 miles from Russia through Alaska.

It's only 55 miles between mainland eastern Russia and mainland Alaska across the Bering Straights. It freezes in winter.

None of these places are safe.

The Welsh mountains may be a good bet, particularly the old mining villages as you'd have underground shelter from ordnance.

Wizzbangfizz · 26/02/2022 22:03

We are dual citizens of another country so providing we could get flights we would go there

SylvieB74 · 26/02/2022 22:03

I could go to Bangladesh my husbands from there. I’m just not sure when we’d go, you’d have to weigh it up somewhere between it getting serious and actually still being able to travel.
