To think if you've booked a seat you get a seat?

Went to the cinema today. Standard Vue. Get there in plenty of time and someone's in our seats.

Politely did the 'oops you're in our seats' chat after furiously checking I was right beforehand. Lots of huffing and puffing from them and rolling eyes and they moved to, admittedly, worse seats further down.

But WTAF.

Surely if you've book a seat in the cinema, on a plane or train, then that's your seat.

I had this recently at the cinema but it went like this

Me : sorry you are in our seats
2 in wrong seats: oh sorry, and move behind them
Next people in: Those are our seats
2 in wrong seats: sorry and move behind them
Next people in: Those are our seats
2 in wrong seats: sorry and move down rows
Next people in: Those are our seats

People are actually laughing at them at this stage and they move to their actual fairly shitty seats. I was finding them more entertaining than the trailers

WhatICallMyUsername · 26/02/2022 20:19

We had this at the Theatre recently. Four of us and we headed to the only 4 empty seats on the row and I was thinking I thought we were more central than this. Person with the tickets says these aren't our seats and heads off up the row. Actually heard one of them say oh great it looks like the people who's seats these are have arrived Hmm

NorthSouthcatlady · 26/02/2022 20:22

Yep, happened to us last weekend. Went to a concert and 2 women were in our seats. Fiancé was very English and gave it the “we think these are our seats…”. They shift reluctantly to the row behind, only for the same thing to happen 5 minutes later. They then vanished thank god, pair of CF’s.

You snooze = you lose. I booked those tickets for specific reasons as they were near the front and extra left space. We are long of leg (fiancé 34 inside leg and me 33 inside leg) so wanted the extra space.

DH had season ticket for a premiership football club (not cheap) he arrived with his friend last night (also season ticket holder) to find someone in their seats. He asked them to move and they tried the sit somewhere else comments.. not a good move when your surrounded by other season ticket holders who supported DH and advised then it would be a good idea to leave... why do people think its ok to nick your seats that you've paid for?

Had it on a flight once as well we booked 4 seats 3 on one side of plane and the aisle seat on the other side so we were together as a family. A couple came along and sat in DF seat and told him he could shove up and take the window seat as they needed to get off the plane fast to get a connecting flight (don't know how they intended to get past all other passengers shuffling down the aisle). I said nope absolutely not we had booked that seat and DF would be using it (he is deaf and needs us) the couple looked daggers at me all through the flight for not giving in to their demands (and they still got stuck behind all the passengers shuffling down the aisle when we landed)

LoopyDream · 26/02/2022 20:23

We had this on a flight once. Booked 3 seats for 2 of us and paid the uplift.

The family behind us got separated (family of 6) but no young children were left alone. Before we even taxied they were complaining about not being able to sit together, etc. they rudely asked the cabin crew who said the flight was full. Cue huffing and puffing about our ‘empty’ seat between us. They spent the entire overnight flight complaining and kicking our chair. It was awful

RandomDent · 26/02/2022 20:24

I was on a plane when someone asked if I’d swap seats so he could sit next to his wife. I said fine and went to sit in her seat. Next thing I’m being asked to show my boarding card and got moved - she’d been sitting in the wrong bloody seat and I’d sat in it, she made me look like an entitled idiot. Blush Last time I help out.

Pohtaytoes · 26/02/2022 20:33

Regarding Train seats, it does matter to me where I sit as I get quite travel sick. I find it best to always be facing forward and a window seat so I can see the horizon (if you know what I mean). So finding someone else in my pre booked seat is a huge inconvenience for me. I don't get embarrassed easily though and will make a loud scene if they refuse to move!

Chocoqueen · 26/02/2022 20:34

I used to work in a theatre, and was once called over by an audience member once to deal with a ticket issue. They both showed me their tickets, and they were both for that showing and the same seat. It quickly became apparent that others had the same issue. A mix up at the box office meant that somehow half the seats had been allocated twice, and half not at all. It was eventually sorted out and everyone had a seat but was a bit of a nightmare, and delayed the show by about 30 minutes. Whoops!

nexus63 · 26/02/2022 20:34

i go to visit my dad, it is a 4 hour train journey that i book 2 months in advance, always have forward facing (travel sickness) window seat, near the doors, i need help from staff getting on and off and they always bring my suitcase on and make sure i am seated, all fine on the journey down but on the way back the staff always have to ask someone to move, the last time ended in an argument, train held up and passengers giving me dirty looks. the couple moved a few seats away but all i got for 4 hours was sneers and dirty looks, it made for a very uncomfortable journey. long distance trains are clearly marked as reserved so they must know that someone is going to get on and want that seat.

Arsewangry · 26/02/2022 20:38

Was I being an arsehole on the train once, six months pregnant - very busy service back from Euston to bham new st. I'd booked a seat and paid a lot for the privilege but due to rail carnage the reservations were cancelled - I asked a guy to move from the seat I had booked because I was cold, wet, tired and in need of a seat. It all kicked off. I just wanted the seat I had paid for Sad

DdraigGoch · 26/02/2022 20:44

@Bellex

The worst one is on planes!

When you pay extra to sit together and in a certain aisle and then someone with kids gets on last and expects the whole plane to move so they can all sit together.

Last time I went on holiday I’d pay extra to sit with my boyfriend. A couple got on the plane last minute with their baby. She was next to us and he was at the back of the plane and he expected me to move to his seat and kicked up a whole fuss when I politely refused. The person at the back also wouldn’t swap as they were the last people on the plane and created a nightmare situation for the overhead cabins. A guy in the row behind offered to swap so they’d at least be near each other but they refused

DdraigGoch · 26/02/2022 20:48

I understand wanting to sit in your booked seat in cinemas where some seats are better than others, and you can’t tell whether the remaining seats have been booked or are available but I don’t understand why anyone would bother to disturb someone on a train and make them move seats when there are lots of clearly marked available seats in the carriage. Why not just sit in one of the available ones-does it really make a difference on a train if you are in seat 34 or 32 for example? If you booked a table seat and there are no other available tables then fair enough ask them to move but otherwise what’s the point?
Give CFers an inch, and they'll take a mile. It's a quiet train today but leave it unchallenged and they'll be in your seat again tomorrow and there won't be a free one. Zero tolerance is needed.

And I don't understand why a CF would take someone else's reserved seat when there are lots of clearly marked available seats in the carriage.

DdraigGoch · 26/02/2022 20:49

@DinnoWoman

Yes. Also: die in your own seat for fewer post-life mixups.
I think I'd be past caring by that point.
TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 26/02/2022 21:04

I booked seats for me and young child on a train. When I got on the carriage, a woman was sat in my seat so I politely asked her to move.

I wanted my seat which I'd pre-booked. I didn't want to risk sitting in someone else's pre-booked seats, then get turfed out and then not having a seat at all for a 2.5 hour journey. It was clearly marked as reserved so I don't understand why she couldn't just find a non reserved seat in the first instance. Some people are just plain lazy.

Because they're too lazy to go along the carriage checking the screens like the rest of us do by routine. Thankfully on the newest trains there are now red/green lights to negate the need for close inspection.
Darbs76 · 26/02/2022 21:06

This drives me mad. Not had it happen in the cinema but on the train. Always lots of huffing and puffing too. Sorry but it does say on the top it’s reserved

Gardeningcreature · 26/02/2022 21:07

Had this in the cinema. Group of 6 of us. 2 women sat in our seats dh asked to see their tickets, they refused I said it's ok I'm going to get a member of staff, they moved. Dd nudged me and pointed to the same 2 women who were being asked to move, again, as they had then proceeded to sit in someone else's seats. I don t think they even had valid tickets. Once went to a concert and a man and woman were sat in our seats. He was absolutely adamant that the seats were theirs.
My friend went to get a member of staff. The man still made no attempt to move. Turned out he had forged the tickets and she had no idea!!!! The entire row was tutting at him as the concert had started by the time he was ousted out of his seat!!!
Also been on a train once (5 of us) we had reserved tickets and a woman was sat in one of our seats, she was with another woman and child. Anyway I told her to move she made quite a fuss, I gave zero fucks. So the child with them, aged about 7 sat on her knee. A few stops later another woman got on and low and behold the first c.f.was now sat in the second woman's reserved seat. Reluctantly she moved across to let the woman sit down but refused to move her very large hold all style bag from in front of the seat. A huge row ensued whereby woman number 2 suggested c.f. put her bag in the luggage storage area. C.f. went mental saying "Do you know how expensive my bag was? I'm not moving it anywhere!" Woman number 2 tried to drag me into the argument . My dcs were aghast wondering what the hell was going on. They both kept the argument going for a good 20 minutes it was hideous.

@Cakecakecheese

I was on a train recently and asked the guy in my seat to move, he did so but did point out that there were plenty of seats about, yes there are so you can sit in one of them and I'll sit in the seat I booked, thanks!
The problem with train seats arises in situations like last weekend and Monday, there were so many late/cancelled trains that when one came in three train loads were getting on and trying to claim a booked seat on that train is unreasonable. As I said to my grandaughter, sit on the first seat you see, even then a woman was guarding the seat next to her with her clutter but she gave in to my grandaughter's best Paddington stare!

So you didn't have a reservation, they'd all been cancelled. I'm sure the other people were also wet, cold and fed up with the delays. Maybe he had also booked that seat on his train too if the timetables were carnage, it happened last weekend too.

I've seen this before. Very entitled. I always book my seats with kids.
Lemonlady22 · 26/02/2022 21:22

Someone pinched my overpriced extra legroom seats on a coach once, the driver wouldn't make them move, showed him and them my tickets and refused to move standing by them until they moved as coach driver couldn't drive off until we were seated ...wouldn't have minded but I'm clearly disabled and they didn't give a toss!

VerityPJohnson · 26/02/2022 21:24

I hate asking people to move but if if I don't sit in the right seat then someone else will ask me to move!

ButtockUp · 26/02/2022 21:25

Virgin trains to Birmingham are the pits.

Always some 'business' person clacking away on their laptops in 'my booked seat' and any challenges have been met with...

I'm really busy find somewhere else.
I need this table.
A seat booking isn't a guarantee of a seat.
Make me ( when challenged to move)

I've even had...
My children really want these seats and they'll be really upset to move.

Fuck off

Hate long distance trains and staff, if you can find them, are next to useless. At best , they'll say "I'll find you somewhere else."

So many journeys from Euston to Birmingham have been spent standing near the doors.

Interestingly, journeys from Birmingham are usually event free!
