Small and simple things we can do to support Ukraine.

A brain storm post really. Rather than being anxious, can we do anything, however small to support/show support to Ukraine.

  • I texted my formal Ukraine colleague, who is the loveliest girl, that she can call me at any time if she is too stressed and need a chat/meet up.
  • I clicked the 'support sign' on Ukraine related linkedin post (the only social media I am on), so more people can see them.
  • If there is an anti war/support Ukraine protest, I would join.
I know they are tiny things, but at least it made a difference for one person. That is better than zero. Please share your ideas and things you have done that are helpful.

There's a protest in London. Saturday 12pm, Sunday 2pm, outside Downing street.

zoeFromCity · 26/02/2022 00:41

Display Ukraine flag in physical space - that and pro-Ukraine demonstrations help governments to stronger responses.

Donate - some charities have their people in the area to help civilians. Ukrainian national Bank runs account for direct defense support.

Make sure to not buy from Russia/Russian owned companies. Demand Chelsea to resolve their ownership.

Send messages of love and support to friends in Russia and encourage him to protest the war but safely...

Donate to Red Cross.
Display flag.
DH is working out whether to boycott the Chelsea match on Sunday, ideally with a refund to hurt them.

VikingVolva · 26/02/2022 05:45

Donate to a charity which is active in Ukraine

Or one which supports all those affected by war, wherever it is

contact other prominent russians like rublev on twitter and ask them to appeal for peace...

Stop supporting and voting for political parties that embolden the R u s s i a n far right movement. The Party that received donations from nefarious sources, ignored the R u s s i a report and allowed London to become a laundromat for related dirty money...although I guess its far too late for that...

Might be silly but I’m hoping to try doing up some Ukrainian Easter Eggs to display by the front of the house, do up a few branches with yellow and blue. I can donate to the Red Cross.

GrumpyPanda · 26/02/2022 06:41

Write to your MP to urge them to support serious action to shut down British money-laundering for Russian cleptocrats.

istandwithukraine · 26/02/2022 06:44

What I dont understand is why the "west" , Europe etc dont intervene? We have gone into Iraq and Afghanistan under the premise of establishing democracy but yet won't help an already democratic country fight for its future?

AlternativePerspective · 26/02/2022 06:48

on a personal level the only constructive thing really is to donate to charities.

Displaying the ukraine flag for instance is just virtue signalling, and boycotting e.g. Chelsey FC is only something which affects the individual.

Equally protests, it’s all very well saing you will protest, but what are you protesting for? Because by protesting for harder sanctions, which is perfectly understandable you are also giving out the message that you only want actions to go so far. So hit them in their pockets but don’t get involved, because no-one in their right minds wants us to go in there and become involved in the fighting, because that would have a detrimental impact on us, and nobody wants that.

110APiccadilly · 26/02/2022 06:51

My feeling is that there are only two useful things:
Donate to charities helping refugees.
Go out to Ukraine and pick up a gun.

Most people shouldn't do the latter, for all sorts of reasons. The first is achievable though.

AlternativePerspective · 26/02/2022 06:51

What I dont understand is why the "west" , Europe etc dont intervene? We have gone into Iraq and Afghanistan under the premise of establishing democracy but yet won't help an already democratic country fight for its future? because to get involved would be to start a nuclear war.

istandwithukraine · 26/02/2022 06:53

@AlternativePerspective

So we are only prepared to defend democratic values when the threat of retaliation is "small" - I guess that makes us look like cowards really? Western nations and America should be ashamed

ilovesooty · 26/02/2022 06:53

Global Citizen have a list of practical support measures on their website.

Great thread.

Flyonawalk · 26/02/2022 06:54

Agree with join protests
Display flag
Lobby MP

Basically keeping this outrage in everyone’s minds.

Also reminding MPs/media of the Budapest agreement. In 1994 the U.K. and USA made an agreement with Ukraine that we would defend their borders.

AlternativePerspective · 26/02/2022 06:59

istandwithukraine Plenty of people didn’t want us to go into Iraq and Afghanistan either.

Certainly many people wouldn’t want their sons, husbands, fathers killed in the name of someone else’s conflict.

To suggest we should all be prepared to die to save Ukraine is madness. Us getting involved won’t actually help Ukraine, it could end the world. Which is why nobody is stupid enough to get involved.

PurpleDaysAreHereAgain · 26/02/2022 07:00

I wrote to my MP to ask for the process of giving visas to refugees be fast tracked and smooth.

DH and i have identified what we need to do to take a refugee child.

I have spoken with my DCs about ensuring that any kickback against Russian children at school (private school- alot of Russian children) is sat upon and not tolerated by them and they stand up against any people trying to bully those kids. It's a madman's war, not a Russian people war.

I will think of other things as I go along. Someone on MN said about donating to Ukrainian animal shelters and got roundly vilified and laughed at- but the reality is that there are many Ukrainians staying put because of their animals or because of their shelters. I can donate to that as well as donating to the Red Cross. It can be a multi facteted multi pronged approach of small gestures from me and my family.

MaltyChrome · 26/02/2022 07:00

Find a charity and donate.

Linked in posts aren't really going to help sorry.y

newhairday · 26/02/2022 07:01

@istandwithukraine

Because this would definitely start WW3.

ouch321 · 26/02/2022 07:04

If Hitler had had nuclear weapons at his fingertips in 1939 would we have declared war on Germany to support Poland?
I'm not so sure...
I feel sorry for our government and other countries where people will boo and criticse them for not getting actively involved in Ukraine but if they were to do so the terrible consequences that they may unleash.
It's a rock and hard place situation.

AppleTree16 · 26/02/2022 07:06

Write to your MP (email) to put pressure on the government about visas
