Small and simple things we can do to support Ukraine.

A brain storm post really. Rather than being anxious, can we do anything, however small to support/show support to Ukraine.

  • I texted my formal Ukraine colleague, who is the loveliest girl, that she can call me at any time if she is too stressed and need a chat/meet up.
  • I clicked the 'support sign' on Ukraine related linkedin post (the only social media I am on), so more people can see them.
  • If there is an anti war/support Ukraine protest, I would join.
I know they are tiny things, but at least it made a difference for one person. That is better than zero. Please share your ideas and things you have done that are helpful.

@fallfallfall

Might be silly but I’m hoping to try doing up some Ukrainian Easter Eggs to display by the front of the house, do up a few branches with yellow and blue. I can donate to the Red Cross.
Is this a joke?

It makes me furious that the best economic sanction of suspending Russia from SWIFT international payment scheme is not going ahead because Germany, Italy and the Netherlands refuse to agree to EU participation because of Germany want of Russian gas, Italy and Netherlands wants to keep trading luxury goods and Brussels relies on Russia to buy diamonds. It is a disgrace. Stronger economic sanctions might mean less physical conflict. So glad we are out of EU. Glad UK taking strong sanctions. Will give to UNICEF.

Some great ideas there.

It's reported now that the only country now in opposition is Hungary.

Same anger here! Well said, and well done UK, this time.

Do you live close to Birmingham? There was a protest today and will be another one tomorrow at 16:00.

Stompythedinosaur · 26/02/2022 15:37

Putting up a flag, social media posts do nothing except make you feel like you are doing something when you aren't.

You can donate money to relevent charities.

You can vote in elections for parties who don't take Russian money.

That is more or less it.

jcyclops · 26/02/2022 16:08

@OhYouBadBadKitten

There's a protest in London. Saturday 12pm, Sunday 2pm, outside Downing street.
What a poor choice of venue.

Russian Embassy in London is on Bayswater Road between Queensway and Notting Hill Gate. In Edinburgh the Consulate is at 58 Melville Street. Shops nearby have lots of eggs in stock.

Ukrainian Embassy in London is at 60 Holland Park. In Edinburgh the Consulate is at 8 Windsor Street.

And keep our powder dry on case Puteypoot tries it on with Poland, the Baltic States or turkey - all NATO states.

FrecklesMalone · 26/02/2022 16:39

Lobby MP to take in refugees.

@Ayalight

I find it really odd how everyone is up in arms about Ukraine when theres a lot more going in the world. The US continues to bomb Syria,Ethiopia etc but because its not in the mainstream media nobody gives a toss.

Theres a real immigration crisis on the border of UK and France but everyone seems to have forgotten about that. Funnily enough that problem is a direct cause of UK and USs involvement in the contries of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya.

Theres nothing wrong with supporting Ukraine citizens but OP theres a lot more to this conflict than meets the eye. Just ask your Ukrainian friend. This will blow over in the next few weeks and everyone will have forgotten about it. Heck, they have forgotten about Covid too!

Hard hat. This is the latest bandwagon to jump on. It's awful, no one is denying that but boycotting football and russian vodka isn't going to help anyone. The companies are worried because Fred Bloggs didn't go to a match or Jane Smith is flying a flag, virtual signalling nonsense. Put your money where your mouth is and donate to a charity with boots on the ground that is trying to help.

It's because people in the UK are far more horrified by deaths of white Europeans than they are by the deaths of black and brown people. Whether consciously or not.

Thanks for this. I've used the template letter to writer to my MP.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2022 18:34

jcyclops I believe there were demonstrations outside the Russian embassy too.

iheartmybeachhut · 26/02/2022 18:44

Pardon me for asking but what are most people hoping to achieve in demonstrating, waving flags and sending emails to mps? As previously said this goes alot deeper than the actual invasion. Sadly the Ukraine isn't part of nato, we can't get involved with sending in troops. It would be seen as an act of war on our part then other nato countries would be pulled in.
War now would be very different from the 1st and 2nd, there are crusty old generals out there who would be wheeled out to get trigger happy with the red button. Common sense isn't really coming into play and it's about going back 30 odd years, now that was terrifying to live through.

Yes. Those countries are always othered and oh won't happen to us so people aren't as arsed
MintJulia · 26/02/2022 19:02

Boycott everything Russian
Plant sunflowers
Display the Ukraine flag

WeThreeKingsofOrientAre · 26/02/2022 19:25

I donated this morning to the International Rescue Commission.

Knittingchamp · 26/02/2022 19:37

Don't waste time on slactivism and posting random stuff on the Internet, etc. Donate money immediately as that's the most likely to help at this point.

Also @itsnitover that's really not true about a lot of people. It's painful to feel so impotent in the face of every single crisis and such evil. Caring deeply about one crisis does not mean caring less about another. Saying you find it very odd is honestly a grotesque statement. Why would people not show normal human empathy?

Saying that, I agree with you about people caring more about white individuals in many instances. Racism is a disgusting blight on our world.

LynetteScavo · 26/02/2022 20:22

But "slactivism" might lead to more people donating money to help Ukrainians.

A FB friend has bought something from an online Ukrainian store and asked the seller not to post the item. She also left them a message of support.

I wasn't the one who said it was 'odd'. That was a quote from someone else's post.

But my point still stands. Although there are people in the UK too selfish to even agree that we should take refugees from Ukraine.

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 26/02/2022 20:37

If you're in Soutu London The White Eagle Club in Balham are collecting donations to send to Poland for refugees.

I'm going to drop stuff off tomorrow

I have just donated to the Ukraine Army via the page set up by the National Bank of Ukraine:

bank.gov.ua/en/news/all/natsionalniy-bank-vidkriv-spetsrahunok-dlya-zboru-koshtiv-na-potrebi-armiyi

ukraine.ua/news/donate-to-the-nbu-fund/

It was quite straightforward. Mindful of scams, I checked various sites and the bank account details to ensure they matched up.
