Found money … what should I do !

Hi so a couple weeks ago I visited my sister and we went around a good few charity shops like we always do when we see each other.

I noticed a lovely patchwork type of quilted blanket that looked like it was hand made ! I paid for it and it’s been still in the carrier bag till this morning as I wanted to wash it first before use

I was checking for any washing instructions on the labels and that’s when I noticed that in one quarter of the blanket it felt different … the more I pressed on that area the more I could almost feel something move so curiously I made a cut and I’ve found money inside

It’s not old notes , it’s uk money and quite a chunk. Most of it in £50 notes and we are talking over £1000, I don’t want to say how many thousands

I don’t know what to do. Go back to the shop? Or keep it

I’m due to go on holiday soon and it would really help with expenses

If it's old it isn't legal tender anyway. Declare it

Febrier · 25/02/2022 10:35

I’m would take a few photos and post on local fb groups saying how much you love it and you’d love to know more about its history and creator if anyone recognises it.

Lockheart · 25/02/2022 10:44

@HollowTalk

Why are you telling people on here where you found it? You know at least one person will be phoning every charity shop saying it belongs to them.
Unless OP posts a photo I very much doubt they'd be able to describe the blanket in any detail.
babyboyHarrison · 25/02/2022 10:45

The charity shops may be able to tell who donated it. I have donated to the same shop on several occasions and because I've signed to inform them that they can claim the gift aid they send me a statement to tell me know much the gift aid has added to the donation. So they must have some records. I appreciate in most cases they wouldn't know but it is not completely impossible.

GoodMorningMrMagpie · 25/02/2022 10:46

@2021s

Granny has died and they’ve cleared her stuff into the charity shop, the fact they’ve donated a blanket that she made herself means they don’t care for her so much, if it was my granny I would never let something as precious as that go, therefore they don’t deserve the money back. So if you need it keep it! If you don’t, donate it to someone who does. Let granny’s hidden money help someone out, she was maybe hiding it from her family who care so little they put her handmade work into a charity shop.

Update - it’s been banked no questions asked . I’ve just made a online donation to two charities linked to this shop and I’ve spent some upgrading airplane seats for my holiday that’s coming up soon. The rest I’m not sure for now it will sit in my account .

CounsellorTroi · 25/02/2022 10:51

Take it all back to the shop.

AlsoNotAGirl · 25/02/2022 10:53

Does the price tag have gift aid mentioned on it? If it does they can use the bar code of the price tag to trace the donor

cravingmilkshake · 25/02/2022 10:54

Keep it. You will never find the owner. If you take it back to the charity shop they will keep it for themselves. If you take it to the police station, it will go in their kitty for Christmas do if unclaimed. It is a bit of luck for you. If you feel guilty, donate it x

mumofEandE · 25/02/2022 10:54

I am glad you kept it - someone dumped a beautiful, hand made blanket that their granny made at a charity shop - they didn't want to keep it as a sentimental item.
I would have done the same as you!
Just checked my granny's crocheted blanket

Febrier · 25/02/2022 10:56

Wow OP, no chance of that burning a hole in your pocket Hmm

You upgraded your airline seats Hmm

I wouldn't be interested in keeping things for sentimental value either. It's no reflection n my love for me relatives though Confused

Maves · 25/02/2022 11:00

Sorry but karma be coming I think your selfish for not even attempting to find out whose it was.

KarmaStar · 25/02/2022 11:03

You should at least try to find who donated the blanket.someone has been saving that money for themselves or a loved one .carefully concealing it so it would not be found/stolen.
How can you not even try to find the rightful owner?
I can't understand you at all,nor those who say to just keep it.
But if you're grabby, you're grabby,if you can turn a blind eye and spend someone's savings on cocktails then that's what you will do.
But someone will be watching you.

If the charity shop operates the gift aid scheme, they will almost certainly know the donor.
Most likely scenario is that it was the property of someone that died.
Personally I'd make a donation to the charity - poss 50%?

Davethecat2001 · 25/02/2022 11:35

Bit of a poor show OP.

I don't think I could spend someone else's lost money so freely 😳

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 25/02/2022 11:41

I have an image of a wee old lady with dementia in a care home who keeps rambling on about her blanket having money in it.....and every one replies
" Oh that's lovely dear. Would you like a cup of tea?"

I don't think it's wrong to keep the money I'd just be too curious to find out where it came from, I'd maybe risk investigating knowing there's a chance I might lose it! ---- BUT I have no money so I'd ponder over it for a while and likely just keep it. You didn't steal this or do anything immoral.

If you bought a jacket from a charity shop and found a tenner in the pocket would you take it back? I wouldn't. It doesn't make me a bad person or dishonest.

I think I would. If you buy something from a charity shop they are the ones meant to be profiting, not you.

Hugasauras · 25/02/2022 11:57

Christ, if you're going to spend it without making any effort to find out who it belonged to then at least have a better use for it than upgrading airplane seats.

MintyFreshBreath · 25/02/2022 11:58

Keep it.

Good for you

You did the right thing.

The Universe thanks you for keeping things fair.

I wonder what the value of the money was when it was still legal tender compared to it's face value today. Well, ok, the same, but my point is what was, say, 100 pounds worth back when the money was legal tender.

Was the money from the 1970's ? 1980's ?

To be honest they should take a quick second just to check the pockets or bags that come in. You think they would anyway for hygiene reasons and safety. Wouldn't like to buy a jacket with a load of snotty tissues in the pockets
Wannabangbang · 25/02/2022 12:08

Good for you glad you kept it. No good would have came from reporting it the person would be needle in haystack to be found and police would have eventually discarded it. Enjoy
