to claim meal out as part of KIT day?

Currently on mat leave and have done a couple keeping in touch days. Went in yesterday from 2pm thinking it’d be until 5pm, but my manager said a group of the senior managers were going for a meal (with some important clients) and would I like to come and if so, could I sit next to the CEO and a particular client. I said yes to help and also because I thought I’d enjoy it. I sat where told and chatted till about 10.30pm all about business only, so it wasn’t a social thing in my opinion. However, my line manager says I can’t claim those hours only the 2-5pm as the meal was social time? What do you think?
YANBU- claim the hours
YABU- it was social
Ps I paid for my meal too as did everyone else.

If he’s said you can’t claim what we think, you can’t claim.

frazzledasarock · 23/02/2022 18:45

I’d definitely claim as a KIT day. We do in our office. One of our staff turned up for a no away day, she turned up had lunch and signals and played crazy gold. And we paid her a KIT day for it.

Absolutely claim.

frazzledasarock · 23/02/2022 18:45

For an away day

frazzledasarock · 23/02/2022 18:46

What is in your maternity leave company policy?

Ours state KIT days are not just for working they’re for keeping in touch.

BobHadBitchTits · 23/02/2022 18:46

I thought you had to be paid for the full day regardless.

Blanketpolicy · 23/02/2022 18:47

Should have asked before committing to going out

StatisticallyChallenged · 23/02/2022 18:48

Pretty sure part kit days count as a full day anyway - or used to. So it might be a noot point

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 23/02/2022 18:49

Yes, I thought you got a whole day's pay regardless of how many hours you do. I'd check!

DetailMouse · 23/02/2022 18:53

Presumably your normal working day would finish at 5pm and you wouldn't claim overtime? It doesn't seem any different to me.

The guidance says it's best practice to pay a full day regardless of the hours worked but, but there's no requirement to do so, in fact the law doesn't require that you're paid your usual rate, only that you get more than minimum wage

Totalwasteofpaper · 23/02/2022 18:55

My company give me full day pay even if I only do 30 mins - check your contract.

Unfortunately, I think the “tightness” and mean spiritedness of refusing the hours when you joined ad hoc and in good faith is a real
Dick move and probably a sign of what to expect when you get back…

Lemonlady22 · 23/02/2022 18:58

You should have left at 5pm...not continued on a jolly expecting to get paid.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 23/02/2022 18:59

Your bosses are very cheeky. Of course you need to eat and they could have claimed it back. You are also entitled to wages as this was essentially 'work' not social. I'd raise it with them. Do you have an HR department?

I"d start looking for another job TBH...

OP hasn't paid for the meal. She wants paying for the time.
GoodVibesHere · 23/02/2022 19:07

You should've asked about this before going along for the meal, or simply turned down the invitation. Tbh I can't believe you are even trying to claim and I think you're being a bit cheeky!

WorraLiberty · 23/02/2022 19:07

What I think is you should've checked first unfortunately.

RunnerDuck2020 · 23/02/2022 19:13

Would the other people there have been getting paid extra for the hours after 5pm?

FelicityBeedle · 23/02/2022 19:16

If you all paid for your own meals it doesn’t sound like a business occasion to me

newbiename · 23/02/2022 19:16

@DetailMouse she did pay for her meal.

LucieLemon · 23/02/2022 19:32

Will the other employees be granted time in lieu for the time spent at the meal?

drpet49 · 23/02/2022 19:35

^This.

luxxlisbon · 23/02/2022 19:40

Who pays for their own meal if it is a business meeting?? It’s weird that everyone paid for themselves which implies it was social otherwise it would be a business expense.
I’m surprised everyone went along with it.

Regardless, surely it doesn’t matter whether you finished at 5 or 10, it’s still the one KIT day?

Floralnomad · 23/02/2022 19:44

You should have checked before you did it if it was that important to you . I agree with other posters that if you pay for the meal it’s not a working meal .

smalltreethisyear · 23/02/2022 19:46

So you are getting a full KIT day, just not overtime between 5-10pm. Are you wanting paid for a second KIT day for the 5-10? Would you usually get overtime and did the others attending get overtime?
I think unless they agreed to pay two KIT days for 5-10pm, you should have left at 5 if it was an issue for you.

CraftyGin · 23/02/2022 19:47

Don't be petty

DetailMouse · 23/02/2022 19:49

Yes sorry, I miss read. The meal should definitely have been paid for. Surely you didn't sit there and divide the bill in front of clients?!
