Currently on mat leave and have done a couple keeping in touch days. Went in yesterday from 2pm thinking it’d be until 5pm, but my manager said a group of the senior managers were going for a meal (with some important clients) and would I like to come and if so, could I sit next to the CEO and a particular client. I said yes to help and also because I thought I’d enjoy it. I sat where told and chatted till about 10.30pm all about business only, so it wasn’t a social thing in my opinion. However, my line manager says I can’t claim those hours only the 2-5pm as the meal was social time? What do you think?
YANBU- claim the hours
YABU- it was social
Ps I paid for my meal too as did everyone else.

I would guess the other staff would have been paid toil because they started before 2pm.

Op worked 2-10.30pm a fairly average day and she didn't have to go. She was asked if she would like to attend.

If KIT is paid in hours, she should be paid for the full 8-8.30 hours.

fourandnomore · 24/02/2022 07:12

I’d take the 3hr KIT pay and tell your boss fair enough but you’ll be noting the TOIL for future use as per all of the other staff who attended. Could that be a fair compromise?

You’re paid for the hours you do on a kit day, but it uses one whole kit day. So if your kit is only 4 hours, you’ll be paid the 4 hours but it would take up one kit day.

If everyone else gets the time back in lieu then, just ask to bank your own time.

Having said that it's weird that you all paid for your own food in a business meeting, maybe that's why it counts as a social?

doadeer · 24/02/2022 07:19

So weird that you had to pay for your meal and the clients did! What industry are you?

Evasmissingletter · 24/02/2022 07:46

I’d think of the bigger picture. Be the person who was flexible and happily spent Time with clients, team and networking with CEO. You may need to call in the favours when you return from maternity leave.

Any hours on one of the 10 days is counted as a full day's work as I understand it.
