Do we now think we’re in Little House in a Prairie? Can somebody explain the fashion?

I went into my local clothes shop earlier today. It’s called ‘Iris’ (there are a few in London, but not sure about elsewhere) and usually it’s quite handy and has quite a few things I like - eg. a selection from Ba&sh, things like that. But I had to say something to the staff because look at the dresses in these pictures - this is just a small selection of similar stuff they are now selling. Have you ever seen anyone wear such dresses in recent history? What is happening? Can any fashionistas explain this please?

I was in Oliver Bonarsebonas in January and saw loads of these type dresses on sale and new ones. I didn't buy them.

@viques - a close friend of mine lives in the next state to Dutch County and drives through there very quickly (she's seen Witness...!) - once when we did stop there yes the women wore these dresses but they certainly wouldn't pay designer prices!

MissyB1 · 22/02/2022 15:46

As pp said do the shops have to just sell one bloody style?? All the dresses I see are those prairie things. And the materials they are made out of 🤮 yuck, I itch just thinking about it!
Laura Ashley dresses were in a different league - style and material.
I’m skinny but I’m 55, I’m not wearing those dresses, I need something that doesn’t add another 30 years on!

Monopolyiscrap · 22/02/2022 15:53

Although she does also like a coat dress.

@Gonnagetgoing

A poster in SAB posted this dress yesterday so definitely in fashion:-

It's not really my style, I've got a shorter version though.

vintage Laura Ashley dresses have been in vogue for at least 2-3 years - my US friend sold one 2-3 years ago on Poshmark.

Cottagecore is the name basically.

That's a lot different to the dresses in the OP though, the neckline makes it a lot less frumpy

I did buy this dress fairly recently, but it was more a case of needs must because it was the only thing visible to me without a collar or high neck line or the formal puffed sleeves. But even this, without a belt, looks like kind of like maternity wear.

I wear this style with thick tights and chunky boots. I like it. More comfortable than jeans, can dress up or down.

Hardtofindafreename · 22/02/2022 16:05

Hate this style and I'm finding it difficult to buy new clothes at the moment. My dh laughed the other day seeing a newsreader in this style, complete with blond curley hair - a Nellie Olsen lookalike. I'm 5ft 2 I can't wear this kinda stuff.

Woahthehorsey · 22/02/2022 16:05

And yes, I occasionally pretend I'm on the prairie Grin particularly when hanging the laundry.

That one isn't bad, it's the big stupid collars, the puffy arms or really high necks that make them awful, or the very shapeless ones (without a belt)
Monopolyiscrap · 22/02/2022 16:10

This stuff is in fashion.

The little house on the prairie dresses were in a different league too [smil But anyway, this fashion isn't that old. It's what my grandmas wore dresses n the 70s. Looks comfy.
campion · 22/02/2022 16:12

1980s Laura Ashley was much nicer than the dresses OP is talking about.

I agree OP, completely lacking in style and reminiscent of 19th century mid west pioneers.But they're everywhere so that's what they want you to wear this year. It'll be something else by Christmas!

Libertybear80 · 22/02/2022 16:15

I work at a university and yes the students are wearing these dresses. It's been the fashion since last year to be honest!

Gonnagetgoing · 22/02/2022 16:23

@AryaStarkWolf - moreorless the same to me but the collar is different...

I bought a white cotton embroidered collar the other day...

VelmasGlasses101 · 22/02/2022 16:23

I wear this sort of stuff all the time

It’s comfy and cute and I’ve always loved a collar

Someone once told me “the only person who should care how you look is yourself” and I suggest you extend that to “if you don’t like it don’t wear it”

How is this even a post

Helpimfalling · 22/02/2022 16:24

I would defo wear two and three

VelmasGlasses101 · 22/02/2022 16:24

And if you’re complaining that they only sell one sort of style - just go to a different shop?

Gonnagetgoing · 22/02/2022 16:25

@yorkshireteaspoonie

I blame Angela scanlon and Holly W
@yorkshireteaspoonie - Holly W trying to look as if butter wouldn't melt with that dress style then coming on air pretending to be drunk... and she has other vices too Wink.
MindTheGapMoveAlong · 22/02/2022 16:25

It’s very Carrie Johnson; frocks that ‘co-ordinate’ with Lulu Lyttles hideous, migraine inducing dust collecting interiors.

It’s the MN thing whereby if you don’t like something you have to broadcast it and insult everyone who does. Have you seen some of the grey hair threads? Basically it’s just an excuse to be rude.
TheKeatingFive · 22/02/2022 16:26

Definitely sitting this trend out

Helpimfalling · 22/02/2022 16:26

@sodoffputin

What age demographic are they aimed at?
I'm mid 30s and I Would love two and three I'd pair them with a flatform trainer or a wedged espadrille
VelmasGlasses101 · 22/02/2022 16:27

Does it matter? Wear it if you like it! Think they’d look great with some jazzy chunky trainers
