Do we now think we’re in Little House in a Prairie? Can somebody explain the fashion?

I went into my local clothes shop earlier today. It’s called ‘Iris’ (there are a few in London, but not sure about elsewhere) and usually it’s quite handy and has quite a few things I like - eg. a selection from Ba&sh, things like that. But I had to say something to the staff because look at the dresses in these pictures - this is just a small selection of similar stuff they are now selling. Have you ever seen anyone wear such dresses in recent history? What is happening? Can any fashionistas explain this please?

LOL this is exactly what I say every time I see one of these absolutely hideous (IMO) dresses! I find them ghastly. But apparently some people like them! To each their own!

@neverbeenskiing

YANBU. I'm trying to shop online for clothes for an upcoming holiday and I've pretty much given up! Why is it that finding dresses that don't have massive collars, voluminous puffed sleeves, frills and a bloody gingham print is an absolute mission?? I don't get it.
Have a look on Wish they have summer dresses.
Gonnagetgoing · 22/02/2022 17:14

@Monopolyiscrap - same as you - jeans and denim jackets, Bros type clothes (yeah I know but I wasn't a Brosette!) - and pastel/bright t-shirts etc - but when I look at photos of me then I looked very nice if I say so myself.

Trying to find a photo - but my DM briefly had a fashion company in late 60s/early 70s and Twiggy modelled - this was milkmaid smocks but they were short... it went bankrupt LOL.

scandikate · 22/02/2022 17:16

I love clothes like this but it's always been my style so I'm glad it's now in fashion!

swirlsy · 22/02/2022 17:18

Tbf this style has been in fashion for years in the spring/summer. Particularly that 3rd style. The collars are newer.

swirlsy · 22/02/2022 17:20

DH has always called my summer clothes Amish inspired.

billy1966 · 22/02/2022 17:20

It's a reaction to lots of people piling on the weight during lockdown.

Loose, shapeless dresses.

I'm currently trying to source a Nigella Burkini for next summer...

Mrsmadevans · 22/02/2022 17:20

Yes seen a lot like those in the supermarkets images.app.goo.gl/GcQncZzAME9v2isU9
Bought this before Christmas it's darling with boots Smile

Joystir59 · 22/02/2022 17:21

Fucking dowdy awful stuff

Melroses · 22/02/2022 17:22

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

Laura Ashley used to sell stuff like this in the 80s. It's very brethren.
1980s Laura Ashley was a bit more Edwardian.

I definitely had the spitting image of that dress from British Home Stores in the 1970s, only with short puffed sleeves Grin

mydogisthebest · 22/02/2022 17:24

I quite like them but would never be stupid enough to pay those prices

ClariceQuiff · 22/02/2022 17:26

Long dresses come round every so often. 70s, 80s, 90s. I've got some lovely vintage ones in my wardrobe so I won't be buying at silly prices.

I could see me in number 3 with a pair of trainers and a denim/leather jacket.
londonmummy1966 · 22/02/2022 17:28

I quite like the second one if it was blue not brown. It would work well with the neck open over a vest top. I've been volunteering at a vaccine centre and last summer most of the younger ladies who came through were in something floaty and flowery with trainers.

borntobequiet · 22/02/2022 17:33

These dresses reappear every couple of decades in order to make it impossible to walk up a flight of stairs without tripping over the hem.

LadyAnglerfish · 22/02/2022 17:34

If this to be worn by 20s to 30s, what are 40s to 50s supposed to wear? Bodycon? Minis? Burkas? Bikinis? Nothing at all?

Fairislefandango · 22/02/2022 17:36

I'm not a fan either. I mean... I can sort of see that some (very slim) women (with impeccable hair and fashion sense) could wear a dress like that with a leather jacket and DMs and look kind of boho cool. But sadly I would look clumpy and matronly.

WindUpBird · 22/02/2022 17:38

I’m late 40s and I’ve got dresses like these bought over the last couple of years from H&M, Zara, Uniqlo - all very mainstream!

WobbleMolly · 22/02/2022 17:39

@129orbust

Caroline Ingalls would faint at the shop boughten prices......
🤣
elbea · 22/02/2022 17:40

Those dresses have been in fashion for years, I’m in my late 20s and wear similar dresses all the time. A couple of years ago I got a load of vintage Laura Ashley dresses at vintage fair. They sell for £150+ now.

Hertsgirl10 · 22/02/2022 17:42

Only person i have seen wearing stuff like this is Holly willouby I thought she was dressing like she was from the Victorian times. Can’t understand this new ‘fashion’ never seen anyone in real life wear anything like this.

Malibuismysecrethome · 22/02/2022 17:43

Those dresses are grim. Down on the farm, Amish or Modesty dressing style but I personally think it looks dowdy and frumpy.

You obviously don’t get out much.
JustDanceAddict · 22/02/2022 17:43

Awful clothes - I saw similar in Next and was 😱

user68901 · 22/02/2022 17:47

Absolutely hideous. Neither my 18 yo dd or her friends are wearing this style thank god and they are hugely into fashion . I’ve had enough of this ditsy flowery dress stuff. It really doesn’t suit me and its filling up the racks. I really struggled to find party dresses last year, looks like this year will be even worse.
