Is it normal to always wake up feeling shattered

fghjb · 22/02/2022 07:18

When I wake up I never feel refreshed. I feel like I need more sleep and have no energy even though I average 7.5hrs sleep per night.

I'm tired all day, too tired to work out and just look forward to bedtime or squeezing in a day sleep if possible. (Weekends)

I don't know if this is just life in general is tiring and if everyone else is the same, or if there could be something underlying.

Difficult to say although you do sound extremely tired. What is your diet like? Do you exercise? Might be worth taking some vitamins.

If you are doing these already it might be worth speaking to your GP. Tiredness like this is awful.

daisypond · 22/02/2022 07:40

What time are you going to bed and waking up?

User112 · 22/02/2022 07:41

Multi vitamins and sleep earlier.
I slept at 8 for a week and always woke up fresh

fghjb · 22/02/2022 07:41

Get your iron levels checked, anaemia is common and makes me feel like this.

WhiteJellycat · 22/02/2022 07:44

I felt like this. It was sleep apnea. Do you know if you snore? But you might want to try a extra hours sleep

MintJulia · 22/02/2022 07:48

Iron levels, thyroid test, hydration. Talk to your GP.

No, it's not normal unless you have abnormal amounts of stress in your life.

housinghero · 22/02/2022 07:48

Please get a full blood test - it could be a number of things. I felt lile this an it turned out I had thyroid disease

Oilyoilyoilgob · 22/02/2022 07:49

Yes I’m the same. Did a Medichecks ultimate at home woman test which showed low vits b12 and d.
They recommended a serum MMA test for the b12, this shows up a deficiency which can be there even if your b12 is at the low end of ‘normal’. Having looked online I can already see I’m too low so started a high dose of b12 after my blood test yesterday.

I got my MMA done as a walk in at Doncaster hospital, this cost £127 with Medichecks but meant I didn’t have to wait for a gp appointment and if it flags a deficiency I’ll be able to go through my gp or bupa with all of my info to hand.

I promise I don’t work for Medichecks 😂 but we use them at least once a year to keep an eye on things for peace of mind. Goid luck if you do go for blood tests, worth finding out issues as soon as you can.

TerraNovaTwo · 22/02/2022 07:51

No, it's not normal. Ask your GP for a face to face appointment and a full blood count. This sounds very much like a vitamin deficiency.

How easy was it to get tested for this?

Its not normal exactly but common. It does mean something is wrong - either with your quality of sleep (due to blue light from devices in your bedroom, or to sleep apnea as someone mentioned, or peri-menopause or menopause which utterly messes up your sleep but can be addressed with hrt) or your diet (deficiency in certain minerals like but not limited to magnesium and vitamins can impact sleep quality, cause restless legs etc) or mental health (unable to quiet your mind and fall into a deep sleep, depression).

Easiest fix is obviously sleep hygiene - remove anything emitting blue light from your bedroom especially mobile phone, turn any TV or computer off completely don't leave on standby) but you'll know yourself if other things mentioned might apply.

Yes looks like it could be one of a few things.

I'll give myself an overhaul and get some vitamins in and see if I can self improve.

Are you vegetarian - vegan

As that can often be associated with low levels of iron & b12
I get B12 shots monthly ( buy them and self inject )
I take a liquid iron supplement it’s vile but works and I take magnesium tablets

Sideswiped · 22/02/2022 08:55

If you have a smart watch, have a look to see how much deep sleep you're getting - too little can be a problem.

hamstersarse · 22/02/2022 08:59

I don’t think it’s right but it is quite accepted

The only thing I can add to the pp about vitamins is that within days of cutting out processed food 4 years ago, my snooze button was never required. If you aren’t fueling your body well, sleep won’t fix it, is my experience

Diet, exercise and good sleep hygiene is absolutely vital to get refreshing sleep. And obviously no caffeine after midday

Imyourvenus · 22/02/2022 08:59

Have you had blood tests recently? Could be a number of things but no not normal.

AlphabetStew · 22/02/2022 09:00

Magnesium is worth looking into for sleep issues.

MintyGreenDream · 22/02/2022 09:02

I felt like this when my thyroid was underactive

efeslight · 22/02/2022 09:16

Interesting reading this thread because one Saturday a few weeks ago, i woke up and felt rested and fresh, and it was a surprise! I always wake up feeling headachey and exhausted.will ask my dr for blood tests. Hope you can do something to improve it OP

Blogdog · 22/02/2022 09:24

Following with interest. I suspect I have sleep apnea also, which is of concern as my dad has had it for a long time and has developed Alzheimer’s, and there is a link there.

I recently downloaded the Sleep Cycle app. It will monitor your sleep and will tell you if you are snoring or making unusual movements/coughs/sounds. I’m hoping to see if there is a pattern there to show my doctor when I go to discuss the possibility of apnea.

WhiteJellycat · 22/02/2022 09:39

I found it extremely hard to tested for sleep apnea personally. My gp practice fobbed me off for about 6 years dispite maybe mentioned it ten times over six years. They eventually reffered me to a insomnia online clinic who immediately reffered me for a sleep study. Then once I was under the sleep team at hospital it was diagnosed very easily.

I dont know why but my gp practice doesnt take anything I say seriously. I'm hoping to avoid the gp at all costs for as long as I can. I think if have been there about 20 times in the last 8 years about tiredness and swelling so now they are deaf to anything I say. They definitely think I'm a hypochondriac even though I was I proven to have apnea

AliceMcK · 22/02/2022 09:40

I was like this, i have sleep apnea too. For me it’s not just the sleep apnea though I also have fibromyalgia. There are many conditions that can be causing you to feel like this, I’d definitely speak to a gp about running some tests.

Also high cholesterol can make you feel like this too.

Oh. Caffeine that's something I've had a bit more of recently.

I felt like this (along with some other symptoms) and turns out I have a b12 deficiency and have injections now. It came back recently even though I have b12 injections and bloods came back with a vit d deficiency. Feel so much better now with my b12 and vit d! But it could be so many things, so speak to your gp
