Is it too windy to walk to school?

Stumpfest · 21/02/2022 06:34

It's currently 58pmh and set to be around this till 4pm. I have a 6, 4 and almost 2 year old in a buggy who I walk 0.7 miles to school and we walk a rural route with quite a lot of trees which are currently swaying. Not yet had a text from the school to say it's closed but I'm starring to worry about walking in this wind. Aibu?

Can you drive or get a lift/taxi instead? It's quite far for the little ones in this wind, I'd say.

Stumpfest · 21/02/2022 06:45

I cant drive unfortunately and I'm not sure about a taxi as we've only recently moved here

100% walk
We went out twice in 70mph winds
Children loved it
I loved it
And 0.7 miles is nothing

Toanewstart23 · 21/02/2022 06:48

What’s the alternative to the rural route like?

Ijustreallywantacat · 21/02/2022 06:50

You'll be fine. It's not far.

AramintaLee · 21/02/2022 06:55

I feel like some people have become so frightened of everything since Covid. I understand with the red warnings on Friday it made sense for people to stay home if they didn't have to leave, but I'm not sure there are red warnings in place currently.

It's just wind... high winds yes, but right now it's not even that bad. I imagine 0.7 miles would only take 15/20 mins?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/02/2022 06:56

DS and I walked to and from school last Friday during Eunice.

PotteringAlong · 21/02/2022 07:06

That’s not a long walk! And with the wind behind you it will be quicker….Smile

Just crack on.

Sprig1 · 21/02/2022 07:30

If you don't think it is safe don't go. It is only 1 day of school, it's not worth risking lives over.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/02/2022 07:35

None of us know tour walk, or your weather. If you don't feel safe, don't go.

JuneJuly · 21/02/2022 07:41

I'm currently having the same dilemma about doing our 3 mile drive to school. It's either via tall-tree-lined lanes or a more main road which was blocked on Saturday when a HGV blew over. The wind seems worse this morning than it was then.

JustUseTheDoorSanta · 21/02/2022 07:46

It really depends on trees, poor quality barns and other possible hazards on the way with this speed of wind. I'd suggest calling for a taxi if you aren't sure, you should have plenty of time to book one.

Yogurtpotofdoom · 21/02/2022 07:46

I'd be more worried about one of the younger kids blowing into the road TBH. It happened to me when I was young. Any update from the school?

Outs are on half term this week and we're meant to be going out. Nor sure if I can be arsed. This is worse today where we are than it ever was on Friday.

I’m in greater Manchester the weather with Franklin has been much worse than Friday. It’s been pouring down and gusting since yesterday but yet only a yellow warning.

I wouldn’t want to be walking anywhere in this and no I’m not afraid of anything just cos of covid. People die and are injured in storms like this it’s right to be cautious.

AllGone · 21/02/2022 07:52

Don't go if you don't feel safe. I kept my children at home on Friday even though school was open. For me it wasn't worth the risk.

dottydodah · 21/02/2022 07:58

Well we are on half term week here .However If they were in School and I didnt feel safe ,I wouldnt go in .A day or so due to adverse weather wont harm them .Falling debris, branches will.I drove home Friday and had to drive over a street sign in the road.

I wouldn't go by the colour of the MET office warning.

We're currently on yellow and it's 60mph+ outside. Yet when it was an Amber warning last week, the wind speed barely hit 40mph.

It's much more dangerous today. Fallen trees, power cuts and school closures here even though it's "only" a yellow warning.

Goodness
My children and I were positively excited about the walk to school!

Not for a nano second did I consider not
Firstly the children would have been utterly baffled
And secondly - well just no!

Toanewstart23 · 21/02/2022 08:12

They attend a very sports focused prep school

Not even the remotest whiff that the school will be cancelled
And on class watsapp groups - no one even mentioning considering not going in

AnEpisodeOfEastenders · 21/02/2022 08:15

I think you’re being a bit precious - it’s not that windy and you don’t have far to walk.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 21/02/2022 08:19

Precious Hmm

Not everyone lives in the same place with the same wind speeds and levels of risk.

Sadbabysitter · 21/02/2022 08:20

Reminds me of working for an agency and temps calling in to cancel their shifts as they were ‘scared of the dark’ after 4pm in winter. Grown adults!!!

That all depends where you live! I've spent most of the night awake, hoping my windows don't go through. It's relentless here and has been since yesterday morning.

The school hasn’t messaged So I’d hazard a guess that it’s not in a seriously impacted area in any sense

Op are you in contact with other parents?
What are they doing?
