To not pay £480 to fix dd's friend's phone

FarangGirl · 19/02/2022 14:17

Dd (14 yo) was with her friends and accidentally hit a friend in the arm. He had his phone in his hand and dropped it. Apparently it will cost £480 to repair!!! His parents want us to pay this. I think this is ridiculous. First, friend dropped the phoen, it wasn't like dd was using it. Second. If you're going to give your kid a stupidly expensive phoen, you should insure it and have a bullet proof cover.
Aibu?

Nope, wouldn't pay anything. The other parents are ridiculous to get such an expensive phone for a teenager and not insure it, and it was a genuine accident - not as if your D had taken the phone from him and dropped it while messing around.

I can't imagine ever asking other parents for money in these circumstances, cheeky doesn't begin to cover it.

Chocomelon · 19/02/2022 15:30

I'm torn on this one.

I think maybe half is fair. She's old enough to not hit / bump into someone when they could drop something.

FarangGirl · 19/02/2022 15:30

@BlanketsBanned

Where it was bought shouldnt affect the warranty, why would it. I would look up apple conditions and check for yourself.
Really??? Now this is sounding dodgy. I'll tell dh to tel the mum to contact me. This is all very helpful!

It doesn’t cost £480 to repair a screen! They’re at it. Give them nothing.

1forAll74 · 19/02/2022 15:31

No, I would not pay anything, people should look after their expensive items at all times.. I am surprised that this doesn't happen more, as people are always glued to their phones in most given locations, and there is always the chance, that phones can be dropped at some point.

Chocomelon · 19/02/2022 15:31

But I also think an iPhone 12 for a teen is a bit silly.

So maybe offer something eg £100

It sounds like you don't want to pay anything OP and sticking up for your precious DD

FragileLikeABomb · 19/02/2022 15:33

That’s bollocks. iPhone screen repairs are about £80, might be a bit more now, but not £400.

Also, if you go to someone else to fix your phone, you void your warranty with apple. I always go to apple for my phone repairs.

annlee3817 · 19/02/2022 15:33

I'd offer to take it and get it repaired yourself to see if it really is £480 to repair...

everybodystalking · 19/02/2022 15:33

My daughters friend stood on her phone...mucking around...accidentally. I told DD it was her fault as it's her job to look after her things and to keep them safe. No way would I expect the other person or their parent to pay, unless they had taken it from DD and stepped on it where they left it.
we payed for the repair (not £480)

What about offering a minimum installments ?

But I'd ask them for an invoice and proof of quotes, they could be trying a fast one.

FragileLikeABomb · 19/02/2022 15:34

And that’s with apple. I could be wrong, though.

I think if they'd have said something up to say £100 and asked us to contribute, I probably would have given half or so as a gesture since, whilst dd was behaving reasonably, she did knock him. But it was the amount they asked for.and that they think we should pay it which have caused me to push back

Half might be fair if they had bought their child a phone at the sort of price point which doesn't justify not having insurance.

The OP shouldn't have to cough up just because they are idiots.

Actually that's not the case.

Several years ago, my iPhone screen broke, and the replacement cost was a few hundred.

It depends on the damage and what they've to do.

It would have been cheaper in a non-Apple repair store - but actually they wouldn't repair it due to the way the screen had smashed. They couldn't guarantee that her phone would work properly after it.

I had insurance, so had to pay the excess of about €75 I think & wait several weeks.

TravellingFrom · 19/02/2022 15:36

@Itsalmostanaccessory

Well, she shouldn't be waving her arms around. That is silly.

Pay half.

Oh fgs. She is 14yo. She is allowed to wave her arms around if she wants.

Actually anyone is allowed to it they want (and don’t go to some Mediterranean countries….)

NeverChange · 19/02/2022 15:36

Get the details of the phone make, picture of broken screen and an outline of what is wrong.

Then,

Dear Apple Customer service,
Can I please get a quote to fix the following repairs.....

Dear High Street Phone Repair Shop,
Can I please get a quote for.....

I would offer to pay half of the average quote from the two above sources. There's no way I would pay anything would an invoice for repair from a reputable source anyway. If they give a 14 year old that expensive, they should know there may be repairs cost ffs!

oncemoreunto · 19/02/2022 15:36

In the USA 329$ is the most expensive apple phone screen repair cost via official apple sources.
This info is easily found online via the apple website.
You should be able to check for your country easily enough.

Spectre8 · 19/02/2022 15:37

You should buy a £10 screen protector and give him that. Teach him to use one so next time his screen won't smash!

FragileLikeABomb · 19/02/2022 15:37

@EarringsandLipstick it was nearly 6 years ago when I paid that.. haha.

Rina66 · 19/02/2022 15:39

To replace the latest iPhone 13 screen is about £300 in the Apple store, so £480 seems extreme.

Dontbeme · 19/02/2022 15:39

@FarangGirl

According to the mum, its not under warranty because it was bought abroad.
Warranty periods may vary in length depending on where the phone was purchased but there will be a warranty. She's trying it on.

BlankTimes · 19/02/2022 15:40

I think they are taking you for a ride. I wouldn't pay anything.

I don't have an iphone so not sure if one of these would fit.
If it would, buy him one and say if he'd used one then he wouldn't have dropped the phone.

babyjellyfish · 19/02/2022 15:41

I can't believe people are even entertaining the idea of the OP paying anything towards the repair.

Cherrysherbet · 19/02/2022 15:41

Accidents happen. If it was my sons phone, I’d tell HIM he should be more careful with it. I wouldn’t ask anyone else to pay. He’d be paying himself!

ikeepseeingit · 19/02/2022 15:43

I just bought myself an iPhone 11 second hand for £280 in perfect working order with no scratches from a website called backmarket.com (not sponsored lol) there is absolutely no way I would ever pay that much for a repair to someone else's iPhone due to what is clearly an accident. If it is an iPhone 12 then they should have it in warranty, and Apple should be able to fix the screen for under £100. Who gives such a young child this kind of phone without expecting they might break it? He should have had it in a case with a screen protector and it should be in warranty given how new it is.
