to think Rees Mogg should have better things to do than review all new civil servant vacancies

"He says he will personally review all new vacant posts to see if they can be closed, and wants to re-evaluate the government's network of arm's length "quangos" to make sure taxpayers are getting value for money"

Still - I remember in Yes Minister when Jim Hacker tried to do similar with the Civil Service and they overwhelmed him with information so he couldn't get anything done.

I bet the Civil Service will give him long job descriptions of every new post - and will then need to employ more people to give him these job descriptions.

Will he just spend his days looking at job descriptions, cancelling jobs, and then when an essential job is not filled, not realising the disruption that will bring?

He won't have much time to find Brexit opportunities if he's personally reviewing every Civil Service job advert!

cakeorwine · 19/02/2022 13:27

In Yes Minister, Jim Hacker felt he wasn't being kept informed of things. So he asked Sir Humphrey to keep him informed. So he did. Of everything. Which overwhelmed him with information.

What a wanker Grin

Lillyhatesjaz · 19/02/2022 13:44

I suppose it's to keep him out of trouble

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/02/2022 14:03

Does he mean new jobs, as in newly created posts, rather than replacing a colleague who moves on? I don’t think he should be doing either but the first is a bit less mental

pointythings · 19/02/2022 14:08

Well, he's got to have something to occupy him once he's reviewed the blank sheet which is the list of fabulous opportunities brought about by Brexit.

eightlivesdown · 19/02/2022 14:15

Didn't Cameron's government (and others before) promise this as part of austerity? Nothing much ever seems to actually happen. Too many vested interests.

balalake · 19/02/2022 14:19

Start with reducing the number of people working in Downing Street. Then get rid of all SPADs on government payroll.

The Mr Rees-Mogg should do something valuable, such as being a dad to his children.

Sparklesocks · 19/02/2022 14:32

Well I already suspected he doesn’t really do a lot day to day for his salary so no surprises that he’s latched onto doing busy work.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 19/02/2022 14:33

I knew mogg was a top tier wanker but fuck me the level of arrogance on display here is astounding.

The man can't even be a semi decent human let alone a good MP. The people of North East Summerset should hang their heads in shame for keeping that cretin in employment.

I think you are being most unfair. JRM is renowned for his unrivalled common sense and so this will be but a trifling task for him.
Crikeyalmighty · 19/02/2022 14:37

Absolute berk with a huge sense of arrogance/entitlement. Shouldn’t he be concentrating on all those spiffing Brexit bonuses or be busy transferring his clients money out the UK??

WanJames · 19/02/2022 14:40

🤣🤣🤣

Havanananana · 19/02/2022 14:43

Could he start by getting rid of the taxpayer-funded personal photographers that follow Johnson and Truss around on taxpayer-funded jets while they play at dressing up and pretending to be doing important work when all they are doing is avoiding doing anything that might require comprehension, analysis, scrutiny and a firm decision?

A good suggestion. I understand the government also recently appointed a Minister for Brexit opportunities, which is surely a redundant position, could JRM perhaps start by getting rid of that?
SecretSpAD · 19/02/2022 14:46

JRM is a classic example of someone a bit thick that has benefitted from an expensive education where he learned a few long words in a dead language in a posh accent.

He wouldn't even pass the entrance exam for the civil service these days. Nor would his boss.

Sciurus83 · 19/02/2022 15:27

Oh no this again. This Quango crap gets touted around by every Tory looking to make this point, then they actually learn what the "quangos" actually do, that they're very good value and underfunded, then this quietly goes away again. He is the actual worst.

Loopytiles · 19/02/2022 15:29

Isn’t his job made up?

noblegiraffe · 19/02/2022 15:32

Isn't he too busy making sure he doesn't pay any tax on his millions?

Well if everyone else was as clever as Smug then they would be doing the same.
Eightiesfan · 19/02/2022 15:48

Yet another entitled, out of touch with reality oxygen thief.

LakieLady · 19/02/2022 16:15

This bit in the article in The Times is a little alarming:

"Take employment law and regulation, which the business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, briefly flirted with reviewing before being brought into line by Downing Street.

Rees-Mogg says that it is still an area where the government should reform, suggesting that power has tilted too far in favour of employees.

“A flexible labour market is essential to our economic prosperity,” he says. “But have we got that right? Well, we must of course look at that.

“You want to look at perhaps different parts of the economy and see who needs protection and who doesn’t. Frankly, most people working in the City of London do not need a lot of protection from their employer. Sometimes the employer would think they need more protection from the employee. So it’s about making the protections you have work for the people who need them, rather than thinking that absolutely everybody needs the same level of protection, because they don’t.”

Divide and bloody conquer, typical Tory tactic.

And you only have to visit the "Work" section on here to see how many people get shafted by their employers.

He doesn't have a proper job because he's incapable of doing anything useful.

They should just give him some Lego to play with because that's about his level.

Is Smug the kind of employee doing nothing constructive that employers need protection from?
