to think Rees Mogg should have better things to do than review all new civil servant vacancies

"He says he will personally review all new vacant posts to see if they can be closed, and wants to re-evaluate the government's network of arm's length "quangos" to make sure taxpayers are getting value for money"

www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-60440729

Still - I remember in Yes Minister when Jim Hacker tried to do similar with the Civil Service and they overwhelmed him with information so he couldn't get anything done.

I bet the Civil Service will give him long job descriptions of every new post - and will then need to employ more people to give him these job descriptions.

Will he just spend his days looking at job descriptions, cancelling jobs, and then when an essential job is not filled, not realising the disruption that will bring?

@LakieLady that’s clever. Get rid of bankers’ employee rights because everyone hates bankers anyway. Then when there isn’t one system for all why not vary it in other areas too?

I’m I guess JRM doesn’t have masses of confidence that the Brexit benefits work is going to keep him busy?

MarchCrocus · 19/02/2022 16:32

@pointythings

Well, he's got to have something to occupy him once he's reviewed the blank sheet which is the list of fabulous opportunities brought about by Brexit.
Yeah, tbf he needs a project.
millymolls · 19/02/2022 16:42

We’ll surely the point is the civil service is bloated and should be cut back. That’s a worthy task that should be reviewed

mangowithasqueezeoflime · 19/02/2022 16:45

Some are pandemic jobs but others are because of the constant political pendulum of insource vs outsource.

Outsource: why are we spending so much on consultants, freelancers and companies

In source: why are we hiring so many people

Over and over every few years.

I think you are confusing the civil service with the government. It is quite clear there are far too many ministers. There is even one, who spends his time working at parties as some kind of entertainment - a clown? Another goes around in fancy dress as some kind of Victorian undertaker.
Notonthestairs · 19/02/2022 16:57

Conservatives have been in power 12 years - I wonder why they've only just struck on this idea.

Ted27 · 19/02/2022 17:03

The coalition govt abolished many quangos. The result ? Bigger state depts who had to pick up the work the quangos did

Suzanne999 · 19/02/2022 17:08

He’s always seemed to me to be a pretty useless sort of person. Does he actually do anything? He either has to dream something up to make himself look useful or a fellow Tory has given it him to do until they can think of something else.

Echobelly · 19/02/2022 17:10

Because I'm sure a super-rich man who still hangs out with his nanny as a mature adult is perfectly qualified to know what the modern civil service needs.

longwayoff · 19/02/2022 17:14

I sincerely hope the people of Somerset will review Jacob's terms and conditions and give him the boot at the next election. Doubtful but very well deserved.

lljkk · 19/02/2022 17:15

I thought JRM was "Brexit opportunities" minister.
Is reducing size of civil service = Brexit opportunity?

jgw1 · 19/02/2022 17:18

It is definitely a Brexit opportunity. The EU not only mandated the bendiness of bananas, but also the number of civil servants employed.
cakeorwine · 19/02/2022 17:26

Take employment law and regulation, which the business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, briefly flirted with reviewing before being brought into line by Downing Street

I can imagine the Red wall, Blue wall and even the Yellow wall won't be happy to lose any employment rights and regulations.

How very, very silly and ridiculous. Having been a civil servant, at least where I live, I well know the disrespect they get. I used to have a neighbour who would yell, How was your day at the trough?" When I got home.

Civil Servants are often subject to the whim of governments who cost cut on the backs of people working hard to deliver quality service.

Salary freezes, rules requiring everyone's salary plus benefits be publicly posted, hiring freezes etc.

It never ends. My favourite was hiring freezes. Have two people of a six person group on maternity leave, and no back up, and see how it works.

StoneofDestiny · 19/02/2022 17:28

I knew mogg was a top tier wanker but fuck me the level of arrogance on display here is astounding.

The man can't even be a semi decent human let alone a good MP. The people of North East Somerset should hang their heads in shame for keeping that cretin in employment
.
Absolutely

LagganBubble · 19/02/2022 17:30

I can't believe that JRM is in the cabinet. It wasn't that long ago that he was considered a complete joke, campaigning with his childhood nanny. The blithe dismissal of employment regulations and import checks in this interview was, quite frankly, jaw-dropping. Another whose route to power has been Eton -Oxford - investment banking. I find it depressing and terrifying in equal measure that class A twunts like this are able to mess up so many lives in the name of 'Brexit benefits'.

StoneofDestiny · 19/02/2022 17:30

This is the contempt he has shown to those who voted for him and to Parliament. How can he even have the audacity to tell others how to do their jobs!

He has to let his enormous brain rest.
Armadeus · 19/02/2022 17:42

@cakeorwine sadly I can quite imagine that the red, yellow and blue walls will be quite happy to see others losing their employment rights, apart from their own. Pretty much like brexit Sad

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/02/2022 18:09

What enormous brain? Ego, surely.

jgw1 · 19/02/2022 18:13

@Mummyoflittledragon

What enormous brain? Ego, surely.
The enormous brain that so rapidly calculates the common sense approach to any situation and knows exactly when to ignore the advice of the fire brigade.
StoneofDestiny · 20/02/2022 08:29

Would that be the enormous brain of Rees Mogg that suggested the Grenville residents were, not just poor, but stupid because they heeded the advice of the fire brigade. Rees Mogg of course, so rich and clever he would have survived.

Thank goodness we have lots of clever people who designed and developed the lethal cladding in the first place, rich enough not to have to live in any building with the cladding on. And all those clever people at the council who ignored warnings about the cladding, and yet more who have rendered so many properties un-sellable because they have this cladding on.

Yes, let's condemn the poor for choosing to live at Grenville Tower and for being responsible for their own deaths.

Let's thank goodness for Rees Mogg superior intellect and ability to spout Latin phrases - and forgive his morally bankrupt condemnation of the poor for following a fire service policy drawn up and approved by such clever people.

The point you are missing is that in Smug's mind he must be much cleverer than those who live in towers like Grenville, because he is so rich and successful. If only they worked as hard as he did and always listened to nanny.
whywouldntyou · 20/02/2022 09:43

FFS our team has been decimated over the past 4 years, down by 2/3rds and we cannot cope. If he were to look at us and say 'they've managed fine for 4 years' and refuse the vacancies our team would go under , we already have issues around stress sickness. How the fuck would he have the foggiest idea how our dept works? Ridiculous.

PermanentTemporary · 20/02/2022 09:47

He's just posturing! For fuck's sake. It's just PR guff. He's like a Page 3 girl putting his 'anti-state' tits out for the Tories.

Of course, what government policy actually required 50,000 more civil servants to administer? Brexit.
