How did you do it!

I've always been overweight since I was small. We didn't have much money growing up so relied on what others gave us which was normally high fat processed foods.

I am now a whopping 19 1/2 stone and everything I try just doesn't work because I get fed up or I'm too busy etc.

So if you weighed around this and lost weight please tell me what you did!

I haven't weighed that much but I found only slimming world works after trying pretty. I have everything. Then you have to train yourself to eat less .

cereallover · 18/02/2022 19:23

Bulimia....not proud of it though.

ohhooh · 18/02/2022 19:25
  • Move more, eat less.
  • Get your steps up first, easy exercise.
  • Try taking the steps not lifts.
  • Swap out things (light Mayo, fry light etc) that are hidden calories.
  • Don't drink your calories - water / diet drinks (if needed!).

It has to be slow to be maintainable. It's all about lifestyle changes, not quick fixes. I was over 19st at my largest! I don't trust subscription based diets, anyone I know who has done them lost weight but never maintained, they didn't make a lifestyle change they just joined a diet club for a few months.

Genuinely, 10,000 steps a day, watch what you eat (very boring) and try and set targets for weight-loss and stay motivated. I did some money to treat myself for every stone lost! You can do it OP.

PurpleDaisies · 18/02/2022 19:26

Not me-my aunt. Eight stone through slimming world.

ACNHlife · 18/02/2022 19:27

What do you mean when you get fed up? Reason I ask is that I've realised lately that food is pretty much my entire coping mechanism and crutch in life. It's not very MN to admit it, but I enjoy eating. Binge eating at that. It cheers me up, helps me relax and gives me something to do at night. I am doing slimming world currently and I've had to stop eating in the evenings due to reflux and heartburn at night. I'm really struggling without my precious food in the evenings and I'm struggling with things to fill the void that food has left. I can do the usual have a bath/phone a friend/read a book/go for a walk. But it doesn't have the same effect. I still miss eating. But I'm keeping on pushing through at the moment at least.

picklemewalnuts · 18/02/2022 19:28

I've lost almost 6 stone on slimming world. Kept if off 5 months so far.

People will say read the 'why we eat' book. I'm going to, but that won't help me lose 6 stone. It will help me keep it off though, which is the next step.

OneForTheRoadThen · 18/02/2022 19:28

I lost 5 stone in 2020. I calorie counted and weighed and measured food. I recorded everything in Nutracheck and made sure I ate less than I used. It was tough but it worked. I still ate treats but I just made sure I stuck to my calorie allowance. It was 1600 a day I think

I binge eat. Can happily stick to nice healthy foods all day come 8pm I'm a monster. I also eat to cope with stress.

I also have a DS who currently doesn't sleep and I work full time. To me this is a big deal and means I eat because I'm up etc

Saxenda seems to be the trend at the moment, you can get it (buy it) or on the NHS. A few of my friends are using it at the moment, very successfully

picklemewalnuts · 18/02/2022 19:30

I've got another two I could lose, but I'm having a year off.

IdentifyingAsAPrincess · 18/02/2022 19:30

Accepting hunger as normal, pushing it away for a while with fruit and veg things, filling up on tea, coffee, fizzy water. One small meal a day.
I've only ever lost weight fast, I can't maintain very long term things, if I'm not seeing a difference I lose motivation.
Long walks are good too as a distraction if I feel peckish, like walk to a supermarket a mile away for a Diet Coke. Sounds miserable seeing it written down but getting the body I like back has a bigger reward and the 'life's too short' message you hear about depriving yourself can easily be applied to feeling un confident or shit in your body, life's far too short to be unhappy with yourself.

IdentifyingAsAPrincess · 18/02/2022 19:32

Can happily stick to nice healthy foods all day come 8pm I'm a monster.

Early night. Clean teeth, watch TV in bed.

picklemewalnuts · 18/02/2022 19:33

So you need an 8pm strategy. Mine is to plan some of my food for that time. I save my allocation of cheese, and eat it with pickles and an apple. Sometimes either some ryvita or nuts that I've saved from my allocation.

Yesterday instead of cheese and pickles I had a big bowl of fruit salad with fat free yogurt and meringue.

Fat free yogurt with options mixed in is absolutely gorgeous, and very light on the syns/points.

Howyoualldoworkme · 18/02/2022 19:33

I weighed 19st 7Ibs and I now weigh 13st 8lbs. I was prediabetic so I went keto and then low carb. I also have lipedema and it helped with the inflammation. Still got some to lose but I have to take the weight of my legs into consideration.

ToniLaRoni · 18/02/2022 19:33

6 stone.

Fast 800 and then low carb/intermittent fasting.

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 18/02/2022 19:35

I did with Cambridge weight plan, lost 6 stone and kept it off for 2 years. Then I put it back on and more steadily over 4 about years. Ended up at 21st. I then had surgery and am 8st down and loving no longer having interest or reliance on food.

Saltyquiche · 18/02/2022 20:00

Walk 10k steps, eat whatever you like but learn portion size and count calories. Make good swaps

elephantmarchingin · 18/02/2022 20:10

Walking 10K is hard when you're at a full time desk job then have to be with a toddler especially a toddler who now hates the pram but won't walk very far unless he's in the mood!

There are lots of things you can't do. You need to do the things you can, though.

I got a free referral to slimming world. I was surprised it worked. You have to keep going though. The commitment, the people, it all adds to keeping you on track. And I say that as someone who's not a joiner and hoped I'd be allowed to do it online so I wouldn't need to go and see people.

fellrunner85 · 18/02/2022 20:29

Running.
No alcohol.
No takeaways.
Accepting hunger is normal.
The above worked for me..

HeadToToesNo · 18/02/2022 20:34

5.5 stone 3 years ago, three simple rules (and counselling to understand why I needed to comfort eat) -

-reduce carbs
-reduce processed sugar
-1200 cals a day

It took 9 months.

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/02/2022 20:38

Slimming World works without having to do much exercise. My biggest weight loss was from 17.5 to 10.5 stone though and that was through a vast improved diet and quite a lot of exercise when I was at uni, mainly walking to and from my house.

bouncydog · 18/02/2022 20:43

Our friend has lost several stone since retiring. Male loves his food. Cut out bread and potatoes. Rigidly ate fruit for breakfast salad lunch and smaller portions at dinner. Walked every day for 2-3 hours. 4 years later he’s so much better as. Much smaller .

Unfortunately there is no quick fix.

DonutEvenAsk · 18/02/2022 20:45

I have no means lost lots of weight but I hope to by July.

I started on January 1st (cliche!) at 13st1lb and am now 11st4lbs. Bought a bike for the garage and have forced myself to go on it every day. Cut out all junk food although it is my vice.

I have two DS - 2.5 and 4 months. Both are up very frequently through the night so my immediate go to would be food but I've just channeled my thoughts differently.

Sounds silly, but I imagine going out with my partners friends and their wives and wanting to feel good. I imagine my DS starting nursery in August and would like to feel confident in myself when this new transition happens. I'm getting married abroad in July and although this isn't my motivation, I'd like to look nice in the pictures.

It's really difficult when something has been all you know for so long. 10 stone is my goal and I just keep thinking positively. Easier said than done!

cushioncovers · 18/02/2022 20:48

Gallstones. On the waiting list for 16 months and absolutely could not eat any fat without severe pain.
